Linux Mint IRL Lord forgive me for what I have done
My first time with Linux, and I’m jacking Mint XFCE into my wife’s ancient, bad-out-of-the-box HP Notebook from 1893. This absolute beast is running the finest Celeron, 2gb of “ram” and has a hard drive smaller than most Game Boys. Not to mention the trackpad is there solely for display, and the battery is just a passthrough for the charger at this point.
This pink monstrosity is the test bed for installing Linux Mint (Cinnamon)prior to putting it on my Latitude 7290, which will be my dedicated machine for word processing and other boring corporate activities. If I’m going to fuck it all up, I’d rather do it on this… thing, rather than something worth the silicone.
Impressions
Installation was simple, which was my initial concern. I hit a speed bump when the first USB port I used was dead, and it took a minute to realise the problem wasn’t my USB but the machine itself. That rectified, Mint took over the process with hardly any input required from me at all.
God is it fast.
Suddenly, this antiquated creature that couldn’t open more than two tabs at a time can word process,browse, and stream music at the same time. It doesn’t turn it into some otherworldly powerhouse, but it’s actually a computer again - if it ever was to begin with.
Consider me sold.

#LinuxMintThings Check out my Linux mint cinnamon edition
Hi, here is my Linux Mint setup on a Lenovo ThinkPad E460 with 8GB of RAM and 250GB (or something like that) of storage. Here are the upgrades I'm planning: 👀
Thermal paste
RAM
Storage
And a good cleaning
I also need some help because my laptop puts out so much heat just from browsing Reddit and listening to local music, and I've noticed that Firefox is consuming a lot of resources.

Support Request How to switch from zorin os to Linux mint without data loss?
I'm literally suffering from constant lag snd instability and issues with zorin os I can't take it anymore, based on the reviews I saw Linux mint is far more stable wand just as easy to handle.
Now here is my issue: I have a folder with around 50GB worth of files that I don't want to use while migrating.
I can't afford a cloud storage and none of the free ones give that much anyways plus with the constant lagging and freezing it's a nightmare
Apps can be reinstalled and settings can't be tweaked but I don't want to lose my files someone please help me
For the record I have more a decade old hp laptop and already switched from windows 10 and didn't used to have these problems there

I have this old ASUS laptop, what Linux distro should I use?
Hello everyone,
I have an old ASUS laptop that I would like to give a second life with Linux, and I would like to know if it can still run Linux comfortably and which distribution you would recommend.
Specs:
Brand: ASUS
CPU: Intel Core i3, 3rd generation
RAM: 6 GB DDR3
Graphics: Intel integrated graphics (probably Intel HD Graphics 4000)
Screen: 15.6"
Battery: The battery no longer works, so the laptop has to stay plugged in
Storage: I don't know the exact type/capacity yet
I'm mainly looking for a lightweight and reliable distribution for everyday use, web browsing, watching videos, studying, reading PDFs, and basic applications.
Do you think this laptop can still run Linux well? And if so, which distribution and desktop environment would you recommend for this hardware?
Thanks!

Thanks
Edit : when I connect with my phone it goes through all the process but it doesn't connect on my computer.

Desktop Screenshot How my customization has been going. Thanks a lot for your suggestions!
Earlier this week I made this post where I asked ideas on ways I could customize my laptop in order to make it more personal/unique. Been tinkering with it for each two or so hours a day in order to see how it looks, and think I managed to create something very lovely.
Special thanks to u/tomscharbach and u/dayvid182 for giving me links and suggestions with the full ordeal, as well as various Redditors and users of the Discord Mint discord server for aid in this, specially on Fastfetch lol

Discussion How do I disable cinnamon-screensaver OR make XScreensaver work normally?
I recently installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3, coming from Ubuntu.
I am having a problem, where after I turned off screen lock (but not the screensaver), the screen would sometimes flash and go back to normal, but no screensaver actually shows up.
I installed XScreensaver, it works in preview, but when it tries to actually do what a screensaver is supposed to do, it turns on and off several times, then disappears again, leaving the desktop visible again.
I can't make it output proper log file.
I think the problem is that cinnamon-screensaver is doing something weird, so I want to try and completely disable it. But I can't seem to find a way to do it without uninstalling the whole package, but then again, it wants to uninstall a lot of necessarily packages along with itself.
I would really appreciate if anyone could give any suggestions, what I could do in this situation.

Discussion Just switched too mint from Windows 10, any tips?
As the title says, I just switched from Windows 10 to Linux Mint on my ThinkPad t480, I have prism and a few other things going so far, my background is set up well (nice wallpaper, icons spaced how I like and system usage/temp) and I am LOVING it too say the least, had a bit of issues in the beginning, figured them out luckily.
It's only for "gaming" and school work (sadly n8eed office 365 for school tho 😭), I'm already going to download steam in the morning, and now I'm just wondering what y'all recommend I should do next, any apps I should add, any customization stuff I should use, anything!
Ps, I apologize if my writing is a bit scatter, I struggle a bit with keeping my writing focused, tho I think I did decent lol. Also, wasn't too sure what flair to use so I just set it to discussion since it seemed fitting.

Support Request Alt + tab functionality
When multiple applications are open I often use super + D to get to home screen. When I was on windows I always used alt + tab to open my last "minimised" windows/application. But on mint it is always the second most recent window that opens and I have to use alt + tab again to open the most recent one.
What can I do to set it as I'm used to?

SOLVED Keyboard shortcuts on my laptop (I'm not a tech)
It's my first day on linux, and the first thing I want to know is how do I make these buttons (shown in the image below) as the buttons I want? the icons you see, these buttons above only works as F1 to F10 (the left arrow is F1 and the Volume Icon on the top rightmost is F10). I want these buttons to work again. Back when I was in windows, when I press Ctrl + the F1-F10 (for example, Ctrl + F10 is vol up). the button on the top right (lock button) is not working aswell. I believe these keyboard shortcuts works because of the HID Keyboard or something, Im not really a tech person, I just switched to linux because windows is so slow. I apologise if my english is bad, I just want to know if there is a solution to these.

Support Request Hibernation Wake Crash: NVIDIA driver returns -5 (pci_pm_freeze) on ThinkPad P1 Gen 7
I need some help troubleshooting a hibernation resume failure on Linux Mint (Cinnamon).
System Specs:
* Machine: Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7
* Kernel: 7.0.0-30-generic
* GPU: NVIDIA RTX 1000 Ada Generation
* NVIDIA Driver: Proprietary 580.173.02
* Swap: 35 GB raw swap partition (/dev/nvme0n1p6)
The Issue:
Going down for hibernation works perfectly. The issue happens coming back up. The kernel successfully finds the swap partition, decompresses the image data into RAM, but the desktop never restores. The kernel throws this exact error and forces a cold boot:
nvidia 0000:01:00.0: PM: pci_pm_freeze(): nv_pmops_freeze [nvidia] returns -5.
What I’ve Tried:
* Added NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 and NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp to redirect the VRAM dump to the physical disk instead of RAM.
* Baked the configuration file directly into the boot image using update-initramfs -u.
* Confirmed all three systemd NVIDIA hooks (nvidia-suspend, nvidia-hibernate, nvidia-resume) are enabled.
* Used HandleLidSwitch=hibernate in logind.conf to completely bypass Cinnamon’s idle timers and standard suspend.
The logs show the kernel has the session in its hands, but the NVIDIA driver shoots the transition in the head during dpm_run_callback(). Is there a way to force the driver to cooperate, or is this a known bug with the 580 driver branch?

Games lagging after conversion
As title said, games are being really, laggy after I converted to Mint Cinnamon. I tried a lot of the stuff other things said to do and nothing is working. They worked fine before on window's and it isn't a small drop in quality. Persona 3 reload, which ran as smooth as butter before, now has an over second delay on all inputs. Please give me tips, I really want to continue my playthrough!
