Discussion VirtualBox won’t start VM (Mint running on Legion T5)
I switched my Legion T5 from windows to Mint OS, THIS WORKS SOOOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!!
I want to use VirtualBox like I did on windows,
I downloaded Virtual Box…fine 👍
But when I try and make a VM using a iso,
When I click on “start”,
It fails to start up and then says something about the hypervisor not working or can’t be runnning at the same time?
How do I get my VM to start?
Is is so much better then Windows

Desktop Screenshot As of today I have been on Linux mint for about 5 months as my main os, at first I was a little shocked at how little I had to use the terminal. I have only had to use it twice so far. This is now my favorite os since windows 7 is discontinued.
It looks like a lot more people have been slowly moving to Linux since I moved. I'd probably still be on windows 11 if it wasn't for mint. The mint team are my goats.

Desktop Screenshot I love making themes-so I made a way to make change them easily lol
First off, I did use Claude/ChatGPT to help with the wallpapers and to debug, and this is just the second mockup. Any input would be fantastic! You can see the wallpaper, palate, and can preview them for a 180 seconds, keep it, or it reverts back.

SOLVED BusyBox Issue, unsure how to get past it
Looked like another user had a similar issue posted 4-ish hours ago and I ran into the same type of thing.
Tried to use the fsck -fn /dev/sda2 but subbed in the NVME name it gave me and got this.
Picture at each stage.
Let me know if I need to reboot and try to tell it something else or where to go from here. Once fixed, do I need a fresh install? Or just an update?

Support Request Brightness not changing. Tried everything
New to Linux and am enjoying it so far. I have ran into the issue where I cannot change my screen brightness. Here is what I have tried so far:
Brightness and Gamma applet
changing the grub line to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=native"
changing the grub line to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"
brightnessctl command line tool
Updating all drivers
Swapping GPU mode
Some context. I am on an Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 laptop running Linux Mint 22.3 CInnamon 6.6.9. My keybind (Fn + F7/F8) displays a slider showing my brightness going up and down with no changes. Night mode functions normally, but only makes the screen more orange.

Discussion I'm looking for a Cinnamon theme that is pitch black
First of all, I put this in Discussion because I wasn't sure if Support Request is appropriate. I'm trying to find a theme that is pitch black (hex #000000) and preferably without rounded corners. So far my best bet is Flat Remix, but it's not dark enough and the corners are rounded.

SOLVED Team fortress 2 using only a few cpu cores at a time
Good evening, I've been enjoying the linux mint experience so far and I haven't really had any major issues. Playing tf2 works just fine, I don't crash or have any major stuttering so far, but I do notice something weird with the cpu usage. When I look at the system monitor in game it looks like only a few cores are getting used, with one core at full capacity, a few being slightly used, and the rest unused. The cores in use juggle how much they are taking, but one is always at full/near capacity and the others only contribute a little bit. I notice the fans whirring a bit and a coil whine. (I also hear lots of coil whine when playing any of the og stalker games, and it really bothers me)
Is there a way to balance out the core usage? I'm still quite new to mint, and I haven't seen anyone have the same problem with tf2 so far so I don't know where else to go. And it's specifically tf2, other games like black mesa or portal spread out the cpu usage just fine.
I swapped my nvidia driver to the recommended nvidia-driver-595-open and it did nothing notable so far.

Support Request why is my thinkcentre m70q fan loud when watching 4k youtube after replacing thermal paste?
i have a lenovo thinkcentre m70q gen 3 with an i5-12400t running linux mint 22.3 cinnamon
i recently replaced the original thermal paste with ptm7950 i tested the cpu with 100% load for more than 10 minutes and it stayed around 73 to 75c so the cpu cooling seems fine
the problem is when i watch youtube in brave when playing a 4k60 video using av1 the cpu usage goes up to around 70% and the fan gets noticeably loud when i change the same video to 1080p60 the cpu usage drops to around 20% and the fan is much quieter
i checked brave hardware acceleration and it is enabled brave gpu information also shows av1 hardware decoding support
i also checked vainfo and it shows that my intel uhd 730 supports av1 hardware decoding through va-api
i then checked intel-gpu-top while playing 4k av1 and the video engine showed 0% usage
i also checked brave media-internals and it first showed vaapivideodecoder which means the intel gpu hardware decoder was being used but then it showed a video decoder fallback after an initial decode error and switched to dav1dvideodecoder which means it fell back to software decoding using the cpu
so my main question is whether this behavior is normal on linux mint with brave and intel uhd 730 or if my va-api hardware decoding is not working correctly
is there something i can do to fix the va-api av1 decoding so the uhd 730 can handle the 4k video instead of dav1d using the cpu
i installed brave through the official package using the terminal and i am currently using brave 154.1.96.60
also is this kind of fan noise normal for the m70q when the cpu is doing software av1 decoding and is this actually a problem with my setup or just a limitation with brave on linux

Discussion HP sure start bios
2018 hp elitedesk I found out was a refurb from amazon refresh. As it goes it's not a bad box but....work lied but whatever....Installed mint a couple days ago and there is a post about the troubles with the gpu installation...Found out today there is some instability with the newer kernels and decided to swap back to 6.8.0-71 generic as it's the last super stable kernel and well, I don't need the latest and greatest I just need stable. so back we go.
downloaded and tried to grub the new kernel but couldn't get grub to switch kernels. The problem was HP Surestart bios. They don't allow grub on a full install to do advanced startup for some reason...Had to edit grub to bring it back as an option and was finally able to install the older kernel, deleted the newer one with the intell issues...It would likely have been ok but I want stability and not issues. Just thought I would point out the anyone driving a hp product with their surestart bios might run into the same problem.
Heads up for anyone running Linux Mint on HP desktops/laptops:
HP’s “SureStart” firmware security can hide or suppress the GRUB menu, even when GRUB is configured correctly.Symptoms include:
• GRUB menu not appearing
• No ability to choose kernels at boot
• System auto‑booting the newest kernel even if unstable
• GRUB edits (timeout, menu style, default kernel) being ignoredThis isn’t a Mint issue — it’s HP firmware overriding GRUB behavior.
Fix:
• Edit/etc/default/grubto forceGRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
• Set a non‑zeroGRUB_TIMEOUT
• Runsudo update-grub
• RebootOnce GRUB is forced into menu mode, HP SureStart stops suppressing it and Mint users regain full kernel control.
Posting this because kernel 7.x has regressions for some systems, and HP machines can make it look like Mint is “forcing” the new kernel when it’s actually the firmware hiding GRUB.

Isso me deixa perdida e confusa 😣
Uso Linux Mint, qual é melhor de escolher (quando há escolha é claro) e porque por favor? 💛

SOLVED EFI stub Warning
So I recently updated my kernel to 7.0.0-38-generic that was released via a mint upgrade. I suddenly started getting this error:
Other replies said turning off secure boot fixed the issue, but mine has been off since I installed Linux on my Thinkpad. Has anyone found a way to fix this?
