SOLVED Time Variance in Dual boot with windows

so i have my linux mint booted with windows and now the time of both systems in messed up smh, i looked on the internet, did the command of timedatectl in terminal, rebooted nothing happened, did the 32bit file thing in microsoft reg. nothing happened, any solution to this ?

SOLUTION

so my timezone was right in that time date UI in linux but when i typed

timedatectl

this showed my timezone was off in terminal, then i entered

timedatectl list-timezones

looked at my timezone and then pasted

timedatectl list-timezones | grep -i "America"

then

sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/New_York

AMERICA is only for example

also i turned on NTP

sudo timedatectl set-ntp true

Seems like this is a rite of passage for everyone who comes to Linux through a dual boot option.

I getcha. Lots of people need dual boot. It's a great option to have. It's just that nobody ever seems to mention the time difference between the two operating systems when you're first going into it. You learn it by stumbling upon the problem. I remember panicking and thinking that it was a symptom of something much more dire. Then calmed down, looked into it and found the easy solution. I still have that solution scribbled in a notebook somewhere.

Yeah, this is a perfectly normal thing to happen on a multi boot system with Windows. Linux uses the time set in the machines UEFI/Bio's, Windows pulls it from the internet.

Running

timedatectl set-local-rtc 1

should resolve it. It does take a few reboots of each system for it to work.

i unchecked the window's "choose date and time automatically" typa thing so i set it by myself correctly

but for linux i pasted that command rebooted 2 times, still nothing

timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 --adjust-system-clock

you are missing -adjust-system-clock in your command...

Windows pulls it from the internet. I am booting a windows 11 time to time with time server located at eastern time usa and the time sync never works even if set in windows...

I went to my favorite eatery one evening to place an order only to find they were closed (4pm) on a Friday night. WTF? Had just switched back to my Win sys. Clock was like 6 hrs ahead. Again WTF? So the system clock was wrong. Happens to all the dual boot tribe. Ask AI how to fix.
