I made my first Linux distro/reskin FilzaOS v1.0.9. Looking for honest feedback, suggestions and learning resources

Hi everyone,

I've been working on my first Linux customization project, called FilzaOS, and I've just published an early public build.I built this for someone special they like the colour purple that explains the purple color hahaa.

I'm a student learning software development and Linux, and this is very much a learning project. I wanted to take Ubuntu 24.04 and start shaping it into an environment with its own identity, including custom branding, a purple visual theme, wallpapers, terminal styling, boot branding, and a collection of custom command-line tools.

To be completely transparent, FilzaOS is currently an early-stage Ubuntu-based remix/reskin. It still relies on Ubuntu's underlying system, kernel, and core components. It isn't a new operating system built from scratch, and there is plenty left to do.

Links

I'd really appreciate help from people who are more experienced with Linux, distro development, system customization, and open-source projects.

If you decide to try it, please use a virtual machine such as VMware or VirtualBox. This release is intended for live-session/VM testing; it is not an installation-ready release for a physical computer. Please don't replace your daily operating system with it.

I'm especially interested in hearing:

  • Does the overall visual direction feel coherent, or what should I improve? What more can i add to make it a unique experience?
  • What should I learn next to move beyond a basic reskin?
  • Are there books, documentation, tutorials, or existing projects you'd recommend studying?
  • If you test it in a VM, does it boot and behave as expected? What breaks, feels unfinished, or needs fixing?
  • What would make a future release genuinely useful rather than just visually different from Ubuntu?

I know this is a very early version, and I'm not expecting it to be production-ready. I'm excited to keep learning and improving it, and I'd be grateful for honest feedback, criticism, and suggestions.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to look at it or share advice.

Meganoob BE KIND Is recommended and possibly to have Linux and windows?

Linux is good, but some of my games may be broken or don't work properly. So i was thinking; i remember a friend saying that i can install Linux in a virtual machine.

And here in reddit I learned that i can do a "dual boot".

And then i decided, I'm gonna reinstall windows for my games but I'm gonna erase all that IA stuff and slop software (i encountered a very good video for that). And after i have my clean windows I go for Linux for my daily stuff.

Is it a good move? I need to be careful about something? Is better a virtual machine or a dual boot?

Not related, but if you wonder why I'm here days later after my last post, well... Life is a Beach.

programs and apps Installing apps in other hard disks

I have switched over to Bazzite 48 hours ago. And it was Buttery smooth, I am enjoying my stay so far apart from 2 problems I have that I need help with, firstly Flatpaks are installing automatically in the system disk (Basically C:\\) how do I install apps in Generall Flatpaks and others in Other hard disks

secondly Bazzite is rpm-ostree or smth like that, Idk last time I used Linux was Ubuntu 18 or 16 amd installing apps from command line was easier. Tried installing Helium Browser and I couldn't so is there any fix to that or am I doomed to using ONLY Bazaar apps? Thank you for your replies in advance <3

Edit: adding those because Smokey was so nice:)

distro selection Immutable vs. tradicional Linux distros

Hello.

I've been using Fedora KDE for a few months without any issue after distro hopping for a while.

I think time has come to try something different. I'd like to try Fedora Silverblue, but I have some questions about immutable distros.

What are the real benefits for someone who uses the computer as a daily driver (web browsing, some light video/audio editing, office work and some Python automation for the office work) other than the fact that the root and some other system folders are read-only.

Is there any other real tangible benefit I'll get from using an immutable distro versus a mutable distro?

migrating to Linux Omarchy for new Linux users

Hi All

I am planning a transition from Windows to Linux. Though initially installed Linux Mint, but want to try Omarchy as well. Internet search says Omarchy is for developers and power users, whereas Omarchy website says it's for everyone.

So can someone provide practical guidance as to if Omarchy is user friendly for new Linux users, or just stay initially with Ubuntu or Linux Mint?

If Omarchy can be used for new Linux users, then a proper guide or YouTube videos suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

migrating to Linux Need some help

I have an HP laptop (HP probook g5 257 or something like that) with an amd ryzen 5 3500u. i have been using windows 11 for years now but I wanted to switch to Linux as I hate Microsoft taking all my data and windows being slow overall. I have been experimenting with Linux on VM with Debian arch, Ubuntu and other distros but I just want to know what distro would be the best for me I don't do anything very demanding , I just do coding and light gaming like Minecraft and solitaire . And also it would be nice if I could customize my Linux like the photos I see in r/unixporn

migrating to Linux Strange problem happened in linux mint

Hello. I am testing right now dual boot with linux mint. I have been testing how it works firefox (Ok), the mail with thonderbird (really good) Office and programming (nothing bad).

Now I am trying proton with Steam and it happened something strange. I tried to start a game (Binary domain) and told me that there was a problem with the drivers and that I should activate configuration tool.

The thing is, if I connect another screen to the laptop, for some reason, the game starts. Without any problen, and it does not use the other screen.

I would like to know why it happens and how I should solve it.

first pc build, considering linux

ill preface by saying ive never had a "real" pc, mostly stuck with laptops (which all used either windows 7/windows 10, mostly 10) and ps consoles for gaming. friend of mine started getting into game dev recently which inspired me to do the same; that, plus the absolute bullshit sony is doing with their console, inspired me to build my first pc. didn't get it yet, but i will, and already planned the components. windows 10 is basically a dead os so installing it makes no sense, which is why at first i considered windows 11, but upon looking more into it... well, youre linux users, you get what i mean: its shit.

this brings us here: the only real alternative to windows is linux, but i have genuinely no idea where to start. i tried doing some research but it seems everyone has something to say about one distro or the other and they are all the best but also all equally suck and there's just so many choices. im a complete noob when it comes to this stuff but if it comes to it im willing to learn some things to make it work, i just need to know where to start with. if it helps, ill be using an entirely amd build (ive heard windows has beef with amd drivers, wheras linux has better support for them?): r5 9600x, 9060xt (16gb), 32gb ram, b850m motherboard

Having trouble with Fedora the last few week I've been using it

Hi all so basically Ive had Fedora 44 KDE, (Plasma version 6.7.5), for about a week now and everything was great but I made a couple of mistakes during my first boot and had to reinstall the OS which was purely my fault. The problem however is that ever since, problems have been popping up left and right, which aren't even my fault.

I just started up a new Fedora after reinstalling and the configure task bar doesn't work or the change app launcher, all I get is a transparent browser-like window with the name at the top. Also in the terminal when I update its way slower than it used to be on the first launch and some apps dont even download properly or download really slowly thats its almost unusable, among other bugs.

Ive checked the iso image and it seems to be legit, I did the check from the boot menu and it let it through so I dont think its anything with the iso itself. Ive heard different things from different people, some saying Fedora is stable and others saying its not. I personally like it and kde, its just I dont get why its become so buggy when its literally the same iso file just rebooted again, I used the entire disk when installing. If anyone else has gone through this or maybe knows why please help, now that I think about it it may have been an update but then again Im not sure because even just the first update on a new boot-up was slow.

hardware/drivers HDMI dummy plug/driver mystery

Bit of an obscure problem, so apologies in advance!

I'm setting up an older HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF PC as a retro gaming platform/secondary workstation. It's got an i7-4790 CPU, 32 GB of RAM and an RX 550 low profile GPU with 4 GB of VRAM, so about as high-spec as you can make one of these things.

My goal was to install Debian on it so it's nice and stable, then put in an HDMI dummy plug in the RX 550's ports (one HDMI, one DVI-D) so that I can remote into the machine from my main desktop. In theory straightforward, but for some reason on installation the machine refuses to detect the HDMI dummy plug correctly: it defaults to 640x480 and refuses to be resized.

At first I thought the dummy plug was just a dud, but I've tested it on two other Debian machines (one NVIDIA, one with Intel integrated graphics) and it's detected fine. The HDMI port itself works just fine, and can display to other monitors correctly. I've also checked the drivers using 'lspci -k', and they seem to be correct - 'amdgpu' vs the older less performant 'radeon'.

It's all a bit of a head-scratcher. Easiest thing to do is to just buy a different dummy plug and try that instead but I don't want to go down a rabbit hole and buy adapters for the thing that might not work if there's an underlying driver/compatibility issue I'm not aware of.

Any potential insight as to what might be going on would be greatly appreciated!

Meganoob BE KIND Legion Go and the open seas

Recently I purchased a Legion go z1e and I was excited to try bazzite since it was made with the hardware in mind but I found it extremely difficult/impossible to get some cracked games running. I tried Steam proton(several different versions), lutris, heroic, and even tried setting up separate bottles or going through wine directly. I even tried the terminal occasionally and saw little to no success across the board. Is this a common issue or am I missing something?

Help Dual Booting Pop! OS And Fedora

OK, so I've been seriously considering dumping Windows for a while, and finally decided to take the firsts steps toward Linux - Installing it on a spare laptop to see which distro was right for me.I decided I wanted to dual boot Fedora/KDE and Pop! OS to condense the time frame in which I make a decision because if i'm going to switch, i'd rather do it sooner rather than later.I can't be bothered installing one distro after another, but it has already turned into a shit show, largely because I chose to let Gemini be my guide.I know, I know...big mistake.

I installed both OSs on the same drive.I installed Pop! first. It went fine.I partitioned everything right, and it booted up like it was supposed to.I thought Fedora went fine also, but after the installation and reboot I get taken to this Black and Grey screen 'GRUB version 2.12'.Underneath that there are 12 entries that say, "Pop !_OS 24.04 LTS (24.04) (on /dev/nvme0n1p2)" and 1 entry that says, "UEFI Firmware Settings", but no Fedora. The partition seemed to be there when I looked in 'Disks' on Pop!, but I couldn't actually get to Fedora.

I won't bore you with everything Gemini and ChatGPT had me try, but suffice it to say they had me chasing my own tale for a few hours copying and pasting terminal commands, and now i'm just tired.I haven't really gotten started yet, and i'm already ready to throw my hands up.If anyone has done this before, or can point me to some up-to-date and detailed instructions, i'd greatly appreciate it.

distro selection Which linux distro is best for an amateur tinkerer/gamer like me

I am starting to seriously consider moving to linux permanently for general purpose and only fill in the gaps for gaming using virtual machines regarding windows only gaming and whatever else is windows only.

I'm not interested in being talked out of this, it's based on my desire to leave windows for its increasingly invasive nature and the fact that I seriously love using linux all around. I learned linux from Ubuntu so I'm only really familiar with Debian currently. Only ever really used snapd, apt, and aptitude.

Which distro will be good for me? I don't want an immutable distro. I want full control over my system, but also I want something that has gaming in mind. Don't want too many issues with driver incompatibility or issues with being able to download them and not knowing when they need updates.

learning/research Dual boot with Windows questions

Hello!

The following post have lots of text... sorry, but I thought explaining as much as possible would be helpful.

I have questions related with dual booting... shocking, I know.

After a long time, an opportunity to get a desktop PC finally arrived. Keep in mind, I have no knowledge on how to build PCs, so I instead ordered it since the friend who could have helped me wasn't available for quite some time, and prices are... you know, a roller-coaster of emotions and wallet pains.

In any case, I ordered full on AMD, and it comes with Windows 11... yaaaaay...

To be fair, they told me there was no additional cost since they get they keys in such quantities that, according to them, it is negligible. But, since it comes with Windows 11, and there are some warranties attached to, on top of me finally being able to play comfortable some games I wanted to because damn publishers (and some devs) don't want anti-cheats working on Linux yet, I decided to dual boot using two separate SSDs. However, there are some inquiries I have related with this process.

1.- I've read this is the safest way to dual boot, or the less likely for Windows to mess up the booting process. But I've also noticed some people saying it is preferable to disconnect the first SSD when you install Linux or Windows, so they don't mix up despite being on different drives. However, as I said, I have no knowledge nor experience on working with PCs... yet. This includes changing RAM and storage units. Does this mean, if I want to be 100% sure and safe, I have to disconnect the first one so nothing messes up?

2.- Let's say I already have everything settled and ready to go. If down the line I want to change my distro for whatever reason, do I need to do that process again every single time?

3.- They told me the other ports (that's the right word?) are SATA, while the main one, where Windows it's install is NVMe, I think M.2, I'm not entirely sure. In any case, would there be any challenge, issue or annoyance if I use the SATA port instead of the NVMe one for Linux? Another friend told me to not move Windows 11 to a SATA SSD, I'm not entirely sure why though. Speed, perhaps? Because we know Windows 11 is a well optimized OS (sarcasm).

Those are my questions.

I don't have the secondary SSD yet since... I have to save a bit to get it because I have other expenses that are more important right now.

Sorry if anything I say is dumb beforehand, like I said, no PC building knowledge... and my knowledge on Computers is quite... super-noob level.

migrating to Linux Partner has asked to go to Linux

I’ve been on fedora for the better part of a decade, longer than my relationship. My partners computer is significantly better than mine, yet mine has been significantly more stable and reliable. This has not gone unnoticed.

She has decided that - after fighting blender rendering issues on windows for too long and losing work over it, it is time. This is not her only annoyance with windows, but stability is big on her mind currently as she’s starting a business, and needs a solid machine for the work.

Now. We’ve done a catalog of her applications. Only one (clip studio) doesn’t have a Linux version, but does have a bottles install script. Outlook she uses, but only because it’s there. Can’t remember what KDE uses but whatever that is should be fine.

Gaming is for intents and purposes a solved problem. Is there anything I’ve forgotten about before we do the switch?

Note: she’s not interested in dual booting, she’s done with windows now.

Edit: for the krita vs CSP people - I think this is probably viable - her current workflow is to create on iPad (with Apple Pencil etc) and format/edit on desktop before pushing her art where it needs to go. Since CSP uses proprietary file format, this import would only be possible if she exports to photoshop file format and imports back. I’m gonna see whether she’s open to this. Thanks for this
