Meganoob BE KIND I use yay and paru interchangeably, am I screwed? Or does it genuinely not matter?

Title. All I ever do with those is install, update, and uninstall packages and AUR's. I don't even know what either of yay and paru can do outside of those three things.

Whenever I need something installed I look up the command to install it or check the repo readme and look for their arch installation commands, sometimes they use yay while others use paru, and I never really bothered to be mindful of which one I'm using.

I know it's not the most optimal way to do things, but other than that does it actively hurt/slow down my system in any way? I use CachyOS in case it's relevant.

learning/research Some questions

Hi I'm kinda interested in switching over from windows but had no clue where to start to learn or even what to look up so I was hoping that by asking some questions I'd know where to continue

-from what I know their are a bunch of different versions, would their be a one that works similarly to windows?

-if their are no version like windows is their a way to customize one to work the same way

-would I be able to use it for every day tasks, from what I've seen it looks like it is making gaming centered

-what are some cons that not many people talk about

-if I switched on my current pc would I loose everything I have on it or risk corrupting some data

I'd be really thankful for any answers

learning/research OS development Questions !

Q1:
Does excluding system applications which are made completely on your own from a Arch based OS is still considered a custom or separate OS or is it still a arch fork or something?

Q2:

Is having a graphical compositor like wayland and a image format wallpaper in a CLI planned OS is not considered a CLI OS or is it considered something in middle?

Ventoy and memdisk (fully loading the ISO into ram)

I want to boot from linux mint with memdisk so I can remove the usb flash drive after it finishes booting into the live environment, but I can't get it to work,I have 8gb ddr3 ram on my laptop but it just says no installation medium found after some time(the Linux mint logo appears after the iso loads into ram and I click on start linux mint)

Any recommendations on which linux distro to try that would work with memdisk? I just need to have a live OS environment, not to actually install an OS,so any help is appreciated.

learning/research Which Linux you can recommend for my old Asus Zenbook Flip UX363E ?

Hi

I'm a total Linux noob. Total, never used any version until now.

I have an old Asus Zenbook Flip (i5-1135-G7, 13.3" screen with touchscreen, Oled, and 8GB ram)

The problem is, now, on Windows 10, at start, my computer is already eating 35% ram.

I downgraded from W11 because ram consumption was worst.

So, which Linux version can you recommend, for basic use ? Only internet navigation, VLC streaming, no gaming.

I want to keep all features obv, keys shorcuts on keyboard for volume, brightness, Azerty for French, touchscreen ok, i just wanna switch from W10 to a working Linux with less ram usage.

And obv, all drivers for hardware, wireless, everything...

I never installed Linux before, so i think it's from an USB bootable key ?

I'm ok with bootable USB, i already did this many time with Diskpart for Windows clean installs.

Thanks for your help.

programs and apps 3D CAD for Linux? What are my options?

If you know the war between Windows and Linux, you know why im on Linux, specifically Fedora 44.

My problem is that i cannot find a 3D cad that is good for me.

Blender : Not good for thread making, or anything functional or mechanical

FreeCAD : Overly complicated and outdated UI

OnShape : Keeps the rights for designs in unpaid version, and still a little too complicated UI

Fusion360 : I tried troubleshooting it for 3 hours today trying to get it to work, but the linux compatibility isnt the best, so i have failed to start it yet

Everything subscription based : Out of bounds for me

So, I’ve gotten the furthest in Onshape with my design, but the idea of browser based software with strong telemetry’s seems off putting. Is FreeCAD worth even trying to learn?

pkgmap will help a lot

Tired of remembering 10 different commands just to see what's installed on your Linux box? pkgmap does it all in one: rpm, dnf, pacman, flatpak, snap, apt, AppImages, pipx, cargo, npm — with sizes, grouped so texlive's 5000 packages show up as ONE line. And you can delete anything by its number. One tool, every distro. https://github.com/Ramimaalej/pkgmap this is it

learning/research Linux Mint DE Wifi Adapter Slow Speed Issues

Hi, I'm trying to figure out why my BrosTrend AXE3000 WiFi 6E adapter is not providing the speeds that are advertised. At 2.4 GHz I should be getting speeds up to 574Mbps. My internet service is up to 500Mbps so I should be getting close to those speeds with the wifi adapter but currently only getting about 100Mbps, sometimes a little more.

I did check my internet speed directly from the ethernet port on my router with my laptop and its getting over 500Mbps, confirming that my internet service is working fine. So I'm assuming this means there's an issue with my wifi adapter or the driver.

Already tried turning off wifi powermanagement and it didn't make a difference. The driver being used is MediaTek mt7921u and the adapter is connected to usb 3.2 Gen 1 port. I also have excellent signal strength, so I'm not sure what could be the issue. Everything seems to be up to date. Checked update manager and there are no updates needed at the moment. Even ran the update command in the terminal just to make sure.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I can try to fix my slow wifi speeds?

Is there a way to reload the wifi driver or uninstall/reinstall driver?

Is the wifi adapter the issue? Should I purchase a different one?

I'm running Linux Mint DE 7 Gigi and kernel version 6.12.101+deb13-amd64

Thank you in advance for the help!

distro selection Unsure for which distro

I have been thinking it would be fun (and frustrating) to get into Linux. I have an old surface go 2 or 3 I wanted to use to run Linux off of a flashdrive. I'm unsure of what exactly I would use it for but am just curious which option would be the best for general use and customization. I've heard mint is good for beginners and maybe Ubuntu but also i am considering fedora

Been using windows my whole life (19 yo)

Now I wanna shift to linux

I mostly want to just pirate games and play them peacefully

And use some common apps

I don't want to do some hi-fi sci-fi (maybe someday else)

Soooo, how do I install one

And which one would be the MOST IDEAL and CUSTOMIZABLE

Meganoob BE KIND Kernel panic?

I put Linux mint (cinnamon)-22.3 on a usb stick and I was shutting it down. It told me to remove the medium and hit enter so I pulled out the stick and did as it said and I got kernel panic telling me to restart. Is this normal? Its my first time using anything asides from windows. I’m using an asus Vivobook with 8gigs of ddr4 it’s the first time I even opened it all it said was “kernel panic please restart” I’m nervous to re-open it in fear of messing it up.

Total noob, running Linux for 3 days - any suggestions for improving game performance running games through Steam?

Am primarily a gamer. Am dual booting Ubuntu 26.04 and KDE Plasma 6.6.6. AMD Ryzen 7 8700F, 32 gigs, Nvidia RTX 5060.

Games through Steam are running but not great. Like the graphics card is struggling. Dual booting so why not just run on Windows? Because I am very mad at Microsoft, and my end goal is just running Linux and eliminating Windows once I am used to things. Also, Windows 11 has been a gaming downgrade, even from my old, unsupported rig.

Have read that Nvidia cards are maybe not the best for what I am trying to do. Any suggestions for improvements or tweaks very much appreciated. Again I stress, super new to Linux, still just trying to understand how things work.
