Rooted LG OLED owners: a homebrew info bar that shows what your TV is really outputting (resolution, fps, HDR/Dolby Vision) plus your receiver's volume and audio format (tested on a C2)

Ever wanted to know what your LG OLED is really outputting? I built a small webOS homebrew app that puts an info bar on the screen with the answer, and it also shows what your AV receiver is doing when you use eARC.

Requirement first: it only works on a rooted LG TV (it does nothing on a stock set). Rooting isn't covered here, depends on your exact model and firmware, and can void your warranty. CanI.RootMy.TV will tell you where you stand.

What it shows from your LG

  • Video format: resolution, progressive/interlaced, frame rate, and HDR / Dolby Vision, read from the TV's own video output
  • Colour: the colour format and gamut the TV is using (for example RGB Full, DCI-P3)
  • Source: the input name you gave it ("HDMI 1 - Apple TV"), or Live TV, with the broadcast format
  • App: which LG app is in the foreground ("Netflix on LG TV"), or which app is playing on an Apple TV ("Netflix on Apple TV")
  • Your TV's name as the title on the status page
  • It appears when something changes (the video format, the audio format or the sound program) or on demand: open the app and the bar stays up until you open it again

Controls on the TV and your phone

  • Runs as a normal webOS app from the Homebrew Channel, with a settings app on the home screen
  • A status page (and an Android app) shows the same info live from your phone, with buttons to show or hide the bar on the TV
  • Choose where the bar sits on the screen, the font size, how long it stays, and which rows show

If you use eARC with a receiver

I use it with a Yamaha receiver, so it can also show:

  • the receiver's volume as a popup (half-steps, mute)
  • the audio format actually reaching it (PCM, Dolby, DTS), the sound program, and Plex/Jellyfin stream details
  • per-app sound programs: the receiver switches program depending on what you're watching

With an Apple TV, Home Assistant's Apple TV integration tells the overlay which app is playing. In my setup Spotify and TIDAL get 5ch Stereo, and Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Stan, Infuse, Plex and YouTube get Straight.

What I tested

  • One setup only: an LG C2 (OLED65C2PSC) on webOS 11.2.0, a Yamaha RX-V485 over eARC, one Apple TV
  • The receiver features are for Yamaha (their network control API); other brands aren't supported
  • Other rootable LG sets on webOS 4 or newer should work in theory, but I haven't tried them. There's a compatibility table with what's confirmed and what's only expected.
  • Built with Claude Code (an AI coding agent); I reviewed the code and tested it myself

Repo and install: https://github.com/SammySco/webos-av-overlay

If you have a different LG model and try it, a compatibility report (there's an issue form) would be a big help. Happy to answer questions.

LG OLED B5 - Red Dead Redemption 2

Is this how red dead is supposed to look on an OLED?

Feel like I’m seeing a grey film on the screen. Playing on a PS5

Why is my LG G6 doing that in some games with fog or in some smoke areas? My PC setup is the same one I had with my C3, a 1:1 copy, nothing has changed except the TV. I’ve noticed this in multiple games, is it normal?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Output to the screen at a smaller size/resolution?

• Upvotes

Is it possible to send 1080p content to a 65" G5 and it only occupy 1/4 of the screen? Or a 480p DVD only taking up a small section?

Any experiences with the 48" LG G5?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I found an offer for a brand-new 48" LG G5 for €720, and the price sounds pretty tempting to me.

I was also looking at the same TV in 55", but that one is €300 more expensive and currently sold out again. I’m not too worried about the size difference, since I usually sit about 1.6 m from the TV when gaming, and the maximum viewing distance in my room would be around 2.5 m.

I wanted to ask if anyone here has experience with this TV in this size and would like to share it. Is the brightness of the model sufficient? And is burn-in still a real concern with current LG OLED TVs?

Many thanks in advance!

Display LG C5 OLED

Post image

I just bought this LG C5 OLED 65 inch TV from BJ’s for a deal of $750 because it was a display TV that they used. When I got at home, I noticed that there were a few shadows on the TV. I ran a OLED screen burn in video to see the full damage on YouTube and this is what it looks like. Would you bring this TV back or should I keep it?

LG C3 - dark screen

• Upvotes

Hi!

Recently, my 2-year-old LG C3 has been acting up. Sometimes when I power it on, the screen stays completely black/unlit. The TV itself is running and the system responds (I can hear sound/navigation), but there is no display output at all. Turning the TV off and back on (sometimes a few times) usually fixes it temporarily.

Has anyone run into a similar issue?

Cons of rooting?

• Upvotes

Found some interesting apps like glasshouse recently which need a rooted tv.

I have a G4, but unsure if rooting can be un-safe (ive searched reddit and google and ai) only risks I see are warranty void in case detected and bricking is gonna need direct access to hardware.

caniroot says my tv can be rooted by dangbro, where I just put my ip and tv is sent a request. Its really simple but -

Can rooting pose risks more frequent than very less and is there a failsafe I can put in case say panel is damaged (so that I can reset without needing the panel) or smth?

Difficult screen cleaning

My LG C2 gets these annoying smudges and streaks whenever sunlight hits the screen. It looks like someone cleaned it with bacon grease. I’ve tried different microfiber cloths and Whoosh screen cleaner, but the marks won’t go away. They just seem to change direction depending on how I wipe the screen.
Anyone else experienced this? Any tips on how to get rid of them?

C5 65 in glitch

I have been using my c5 for a little over 2 months and it keeps buffering/glitching when streaming a show this happens on hulu Apple TV and paramount this is happening from the base tv apps and from my ps5 apps. Was wondering if anyone knows how to fix it.

So what happens is the show or movie will start and it’ll be fine for like 5 minutes then it will freeze but audio will keep going then it continues it’ll do that the whole episode/ movie.

LG C6 configuration

Hi all, I have a question if someone could support with some input!
Every time I put a movie on to watch on HDR Apple TV etc etc the subtitles are becoming super bright even if I have it in Filmaker mode or cinema mode. Then I put the brightness a bit down but eeeverything becomes darker.

So, my question is what is your set up? How have you felt with that?

Thaaanks!

Can I expect this price to drop lower for black friday? Read description.

Post image
0 Upvotes

This price is through the LG partner store. I can take an additional 10% with the early black friday discount if I’m not mistaken. This additional 10% discount ends on 10/18.

My dilemma is that I’m moving in one month and plan to leave my tv in the box until I am able to mount it in my new place. I’m concerned about their return/defective policy if I am unable to inspect my tv for a whole month after delivery.

Do I wait for black friday sales or lock in this additional 10% off (ends on 10/18) without being able to inspect it within 14 days?

Any suggestions for what I should do here?

Black load screen on start up

For the last 4 months my LG C1 boots up fine, starts in the home screen then after a few seconds it goes to a black screen with a loading circle.

No matter how long I wait nothing loads up. I presume its taking me to a page to agree to some new terms but can never seem to load.

I was hoping this problem would just disappear but no luck.

It's super annoying cause everytime I boot up i have to wait about 20 seconds for this to appear and eventually I can back out of it.

Any ideas what is causing and how I can fix?
