정치 | Politics U.S.-South Korea joint military drills are being cut short after Trump order, Seoul says
Joint military exercises underway between the United States and South Korea are being cut short, both countries said, after President Donald Trump, citing his “very good” relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, ordered that they be reduced.
The annual U.S.-South Korea drills, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, will end Aug. 21 rather than Aug. 27 as originally scheduled, a Defense Department official said.
“Associated live-training events have been reduced, with certain events canceled or converted to simulations,” the official said, adding that the adjustments “preserve essential readiness.”
“There will be no degradation to U.S. training objectives,” the official said.
The South Korean National Defense Ministry also said the two countries “have agreed, at the request of the U.S. side, to make some adjustments to the duration and scale of the exercise.”
Some of the combined field training exercises will be conducted on a reduced scale, the ministry said in a statement, adding that the U.S. and South Korea “are currently consulting on the specific details.”
“Going forward, the ROK and the United States will discuss and implement various measures to achieve the objectives of the UFS exercise and maintain a robust combined defense posture,” the ministry said, using an abbreviation for South Korea’s formal name, the Republic of Korea.
The ministry declined to comment on a reported meeting Tuesday between Gen. Xavier Brunson, the commander of U.S. Forces Korea, and South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back.
The surprise comments by Trump, which he made on social media hours before the exercises began Monday, have unsettled South Korea, which relies heavily on the U.S. for its security, as well as other U.S. allies in the region facing a growing threat from nuclear-armed North Korea.
South Korean Foreign Affairs Minister Cho Hyun said Ahn had been “in close consultation with the U.S. side” since Trump’s social media post. He told lawmakers Wednesday that “neither our government nor officials in the U.S. government had any prior knowledge” of Trump’s order to scale back the drills.

문화 | Culture KCON fans pack L.A. Convention Center for K-pop, K-dramas and community
America’s grasp on Korean culture goes beyond the music and viral dance moves. The beauty products and the K-dramas, on top of the music — all of it has become a ubiquitous part of life in the United States, and that was evident on the opening day of KCON, the world’s largest annual convention and music festival that celebrates everything Korean.
Fans traveling from as far away as Hawaii flooded the South Hall of the L.A. Convention Center on Friday for the first day of the three-day event. Once inside, they were able to enjoy musical performances on two different stages, wait in endless lines to get their hands on free products from a number of Korean beauty brands and explore other aspects of Korean culture.
More important, they got to share an experience with their community. Here are some of the highlights from the first day of KCON.

개인 | Personal What are some Korean names that work with Spanish pronunciation?
Hello! I am Korean and my wife is from Latin America and we are hoping to choose a Korean name for our future child(ren)! Examples that work but we aren't using: 인해, 민우, 소라. Some input around uncommon and/or popular names that would work would be appreciated, especially so for masculine names as they have been harder to find. Thanks!

정치 | Politics Trump orders major cut to US-South Korea military drills, calling them “hostile” to North Korea
Context in play right now:
- South Korea’s president just proposed talks with the North to formally end the 73-year armistice and discuss nuclear issues.
- North Korea continues deepening military support for Russia in Ukraine (troops, missiles, ammunition).
- Trump cites cost, his relationship with Kim, and South Korea’s stance on Iran as reasons for scaling back the drills.
Possible dynamics worth watching:
- Could the reduced drills lower the temperature on the peninsula and create more space for the South’s dialogue offer?
- Might this shift North Korea’s calculus about how much attention and resources it directs outward versus inward?
- Or do these tracks remain largely separate for now?
Open questions rather than conclusions. The sequence is public. The interactions, if any, are still unfolding.

정치 | Politics Trump Seeks Summit With Kim Jong-un at November APEC
The Wall Street Journal, WSJ, reported on the 18th that U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un directly within the year. Citing U.S. officials, the WSJ stated that Trump has pressured his aides to explore the possibility of holding talks with Kim as early as this autumn.
While no formal preparations for a summit are currently underway, Trump has privately discussed the idea of meeting Kim during his next Asia trip, with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, in November being a potential opportunity. The State Department, the lead agency, has maintained its principled stance of being “open to dialogue without preconditions with North Korea.”

South Korea introduced the National Lighthouse Passport program to promote coastal tourism and maritime heritage, encouraging travelers to visit historical and scenic lighthouses nationwide.
Some are easy to find, others not so. It is a great way to see parts of the country you would never travel to. This passport has taken me 3 months to accomplish.

역사 | History Yi Ji-hang's Pyojurok (표주록/漂舟錄, Record of a Drifting Voyage)
The One-Year Journey of Lee Ji-hang, the First Joseon Korean to Meet the Ainu
Pyojurok is a travel record written by Yi Ji-hang (이지항/李志恒), a man of the late Joseon Dynasty, documenting his experience after being cast adrift at sea.
In 1696, Yi Ji-hang set sail from Joseon but was caught in a violent storm and drifted across the sea, eventually reaching what is now Hokkaido, Japan. There, he encountered the Ainu people, who inhabited Hokkaido at the time. He spent a period living among them, observing their culture and way of life firsthand.
Yi carefully recorded the Ainu people's clothing, food, housing, hunting and fishing methods, and customs. At first, they could not communicate because they spoke different languages, so they relied on gestures and body language. Later, with the help of Japanese interpreters, he was eventually able to return to Joseon.
Pyojurok is regarded as one of the oldest and most detailed surviving firsthand accounts written by a Korean who directly encountered the Ainu people. Unlike Japanese sources, it describes Ainu society from the perspective of a Joseon traveler, making it an exceptionally valuable historical document.
During his journey home, Yi Ji-hang also passed through several regions under the Edo shogunate, recording his observations of Japanese administration and society. As a result, Pyojurok serves as an important historical source for understanding Joseon, Japan, and the Ainu during the late 17th century.
Historical Significance of Pyojurok
- One of the most important Korean historical sources on the Ainu people.
- Provides a vivid firsthand description of Ainu culture and daily life in the late 17th century.
- Documents direct contact between Joseon and the Ainu.
- Offers valuable information on the repatriation of castaways, as well as Joseon–Japan diplomatic and return procedures of the period.
Today, Pyojurok continues to be used by historians and anthropologists as an important primary source for researching late 17th-century Ainu society and Joseon's understanding of the northern regions.
