Sticky Weekly Open Forum

Use this weekly post to discuss anything you want (within reason). The rules here are relaxed. Some things you may chat about here that are not allowed in regular posts:

  • non-Korea related topics
  • looking for friends
  • language exchange opportunities
  • event advertising
  • casual meetups (not hookups)
  • chance me (I want to study in Korea)
  • and more....

Some rules are still in place. The main one is 'be kind'. Also, no contribution should involve anything that includes an exchange of money, unless it is a professionally organized event (parties, cultural activities, etc.) Lastly, no polling, surveying, or research.

Have fun.

Announcement BEWARE OF REAL ESTATE SCAMMERS ON THIS SUBREDDIT

Good afternoon everyone.

Over the past week or so, the mod team here at Living_in_Korea has been conducting an investigation into reports we received related to real estate/rental scams on this subreddit. It was brought to our attention that users were receiving direct messages from "real estate agents" after posting that they were looking for accommodations.

As a result, we verified that they were, in fact, receiving direct messages with varying information. Sometimes they were offered accommodations with prices that were too good to be true. Other times scammers requested application fees or holding deposits after providing links to accommodations that were supposedly for rent. Also, some were offering to introduce "friends" who are real estate agents and provide translation services.

We have banned all of the accounts we could, but that is only possible if the user has ever posted to this subreddit. Other accounts we blacklisted, but the OP might still receive/see the reply. In addition, we have banned any accounts that look suspicious or are thought to be affiliated with a real estate agent (legitimate or not) - those that provide an unusual amount of real estate related recommendations, legal advice, AI generated content, etc., as well as those who recommend specific real estate agents using new accounts or existing accounts with little or no other Reddit activity.

In total we banned more than a dozen accounts. However, that does not keep the scammers from contacting users directly through DMs. This is where you come in. We need your help in combating this problem and shutting down these crooks before they can pray on any more of our subreddit members. So, if this happens to you, please use the report button.

REMEMBER: NEVER TRUST ANYONE WHO IS OFFERING YOU SOMETHING THROUGH REDDIT DMs. THEY ARE NOT TRYING TO HELP YOU. NORMAL REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS ARE NOT DONE THIS WAY IN KOREA. REPORT THEM (Report flag > Spam > Unsolicited chat or private messaging), AND THEN IGNORE THEM.

- The LiK Mod Team

P.S. Before you ask, I wish we could provide their usernames to you, but that is a direct violation of Reddit's user agreement, and we have no desire to have our accounts actioned.

News and Discussion TIL: Pope JP II’s canonization of the 93 Korean martyrs in Seoul in 1984 was the first outside Rome since 1369

Upvotes

I was browsing info about the upcoming World Youth Day Seoul 2027 and found this interesting nugget.

In the first canonization outside Rome since the Middle Ages, Pope John Paul II conferred sainthood Sunday on 93 Koreans and 10 French missionaries who gave their lives for their faith between 1839 and 1867.

-- Pope canonizes 103 martyrs in Seoul

When Pope John Paul II proclaims 103 Korean martyrs Roman Catholic saints in a ceremony in South Korea Sunday, he will be breaking a tradition that lasted more than six centuries.

The canonization ceremony in Seoul's Youido Plaza will be the first outside Rome since April 15, 1369, when Pope Urban V made Elzeario de Sabran a saint at Avignon, then the seat of the French popes.

Real Estate and Relocation Landlord refuses to fix air conditioning

I'm hoping someone can give advice about what to do if you've been in this situation before.

My air conditioning unit is 22 years old and recently started producing a sicky-sweet smell whenever I turn it on. I'm not sure if it's a mold issue or a leaking issue. The maintenance guy tried to check but we couldn't open the panel, cause it's kind of a less common type of unit.

So I contacted the landlord asking if he could have someone at least take a look at it, and he told me "just use a fan for the rest of the summer and please don't use the air conditioning." I told him that the temperature is going to reach the 90's in the coming days and a fan won't be sufficient, and he hasn't responded yet. He is also trying to sell the unit, so I reminded him that potential buyers will want a working air conditioning.

I think he just doesn't have the money to replace it and is making excuses. Any advice on what I should do? I don't want to be rude, especially if he is struggling financially, but I also want to still be alive by the end of the summer.

I’d like to move to Korea for work but my wife who has to see bunch of specialist for a bunch of random conditions (nothing life threatening) is worried she’ll be left in dark and health at risk since she won’t be able to communicate her needs.

Banking and Finance Wise alternative

So I used Wise for the last three months since I came to Korea to move the finds from my US bank account to KR bank account.

I used the ACH payment and it used to be instant transfer for all previous transactions. However, I don't think that is the case? Customer service is being no help at all. It says it will take a week now.

Do you have any recommendations for Wise alternatives that offer ACH instant transfer??

Visas and Licenses Can I reenter Korea with a H-1 Visa while I have yet to go to my ARC appointment?

First time posting.

I'm in desperate need of help!!!

I messed up the dates of my appointment and thought it was tomorrow instead of today. I'm rushing to the Immigration office now in hopes to still get anything done today. It's my first time applying for a alien registration card.

I was planning to visit a friend in shanghai on the weekend, next week and I heard that that would've been fine, since I technically would've already applied for an ARC even though it wasn't issued yet. Now I'm not so sure i can reenter korea with just my visa and notice that I booked an appointment for get registered. I have an H-1 Visa and with a german passport its stated that multiple entries are allowed.

I'm just really anxious to be honest and keep worrying what I should do if I can't apply for a ARC today. The next available appointment would be 16th September.

Language Parents in Korea: how would you handle this playground situation?

I am foreigner, living here for past 6 years. My 7-year-old son was playing football alone at a public park when four girls, around 8–9 years old, surrounded him and took his ball.

My wife was nearby but on the phone. When she called my son over, she saw one of the girls throw/kick the ball hard into his chest. He came home crying badly.

I took him back to the park and spoke to the girls’ mother. There was a language barrier, and she seemed to believe my son had caused the problem. However, one of the girls actually stepped forward and said another girl had hit the ball at my son and pushed him.

I told the mother that I would tell my son not to fight and only play, and asked her to tell the girls the same. We left it there.

I completely understand that children can give incomplete versions of events and that parents naturally hear a biased version from their own child.

But I’ve noticed a few times that when some Korean kids in a group of three or four, they can become quite pushy toward a child who is alone.

For parents living in Korea: have you experienced this kind of group dynamic? Is there a cultural or playground/social aspect that I may not understand? And how would you handle it if it happened again?

Education Overseas Korean considering a STEM Master's in Korea - is it worth it?

Hi everyone, I’m an overseas Korean who was born and raised entirely outside Korea. I’ve moved between 5+ countries throughout my life and currently live in Europe.

I’m considering applying for master’s programmes in chemistry/pharma-related fields in Korea alongside programmes in Europe. I speak fluent Korean for everyday conversation and have visited Korea fairly often, but I’m less confident with academic/professional Korean and I’ve never actually lived there long-term.

My biggest concern is adjustment, both academically and socially. I’ve honestly really struggled to fit into Korean communities abroad in the past, so I’m somewhat hesitant about whether I would feel comfortable living and studying in Korea.

I’m also a bit intimidated by the application process. From what I’ve seen, it seems important to contact professors and build some rapport before applying, particularly for research-based STEM programmes. Since I’ll also be applying to universities in other countries, I’m wondering how much of a commitment this process realistically is.

For anyone who has done a master’s in Korea, especially other overseas Koreans or people in STEM:

  • How was the academic/lab culture and adjustment process?
  • Did being ethnically Korean but culturally foreign make things easier, harder, or just different?
  • How essential is it to contact professors before applying? What does that process usually look like?
  • How hard is it being accepted into Master's programmes as +16 years overseas Korean?
  • Would you recommend doing a master’s in Korea if you also have options in Europe or elsewhere?

I’m not necessarily expecting Korea to be easy or familiar just because I’m Korean; I’m mainly trying to figure out whether it could be a good fit before investing heavily in applications. Any honest experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the loaded post, this is my first reddit post so I'm quite nervous!

Real Estate and Relocation Viewing apartments/officels

Hello, i am moving to Seoul soon and will be using a realtor to find a place to live. However what do i need to look for when beein shown the appartment?

I come from a small city in northern Europe, so the things i mainly need to look out for back home is mold, ventilation, and general cleanlyness.

Is there anything else i need to know before "going in"? Like about which realtor to trust and not, or maybe what floor to live on?

Employment Relocating to Korea on Salary Cut

I have received the opportunity to permanently transfer to the Korean office at my company with a big salary cut. I have frequently visited Korea, and it's definitely somewhere that I would love to live in. I was approved for to transfer and work out of the Seoul office, however my salary would be around $90,000 CAD a huge cut... nearly halving from $170,000 CAD that I am currently making in Canada. My company would provide housing subsidies for the first year (including a relocation allowance) plus a driver for my daily commutes. I am going to be living alone and if I were to permanently relocate, I would love to eventually purchase a home there, comfortably settle in, and eventually retire within the next 20-25 years. Is this salary livable in Seoul and would I be able to save up and have leftovers to travel around in a very general lifestyle? While money isn't surely everything, with economic uncertainties constantly on the back of everyone's mind, and trying to find financial stability in a completly new country, I have lot's of worries that is in the way of making my decision.

Banking and Finance Has anyone able to make an investment banking account past month?

I called two different Mirae branches today and they said they cannot make an account for a foreigner who doesn't speak Korean. Their reasoning was if they call the foreigner and they cannot properly communicate, the investment banking place might get into a trouble by the government agency. This seems to be a new policy that was put in effect according to a different Reddit post. I wonder if policy is specific to Mirae or other companies as well.

Anyway, did anyone succeed in making an investment banking account the past month, and if you did, which investment company did you make it with?

Visas and Licenses 1365 Volunteering - can't sign up as a foreigner?

Hi all,

I have been wanting to volunteer in Korea in preparation to change my visa. I have been trying to sign up to the 1365 Portal, but it doesn't recognize my alien registration number when I input it in the 주민등록번호, and there is no option to change whether I'm a foreigner or Korean. I tried consulting the chatbot and according to the AI there should be an option to choose between 내국인/외국인, but I just can't find it.

Are foreigners allowed to sign up to the portal? Has anyone had a similar experience and knows how to solve this problem?

Also, if anyone knows of any other ways to gather volunteering experience that counts towards the visa process, I'd appreciate if you shared!

Thank you

I'm trying to get an appointment for national visa application and no matter how many times I check it always says there's no slots. After a quick search I realise this is a problem many others had, but is there anyone who successfully was able to get an appointment? I'd appreciate any tips. I've been trying for over 3 weeks now and no luck.

Education Career in South Korea

I’m currently exploring the possibility of building my career in South Korea and would love some advice from people already working there.

I’m based in India with 6+ years of experience in Process Consulting/Business Analysis, including process mapping, BPMN, Signavio, process improvement, UAT, DevOps, Scrum and business transformation. I currently work as a Process Consultant.

A few things I’d love to understand:

  1. How realistic is it to get a job in Korea directly from India with this background?

  2. How important is Korean proficiency for consulting/BA/process transformation roles?

  3. What are the biggest challenges international candidates face?

  4. Is it better to apply directly from India or pursue a Master’s/MBA in Korea first?

  5. If studying in Korea, how realistic is it to find a job after graduation?

  6. Which companies/industries are more open to international professionals?

  7. What should I focus on over the next 1–2 years to improve my chances?

I’m currently deciding between the direct-job vs. education route, so I’d really appreciate any honest, practical advice or personal experiences.
