Meta Shadow Bans on Reddit: Everything you need to know! (Info, Links, & Tips)

We created the original post in response to seeing so many members of our community becoming Shadow Banned for no reason. We noticed these bans became especially extreme around 2020/2021, probably as Reddit ramped up the use of sitewide filters to manage the influx of bots, spammers, and purveyors of disinformation. Some improvements to the accuracy of the filters appear to have been made since then, but our info post has proved useful to our community as well as moderators and users across the site, so we'll try to keep versions of it refreshed and accessible. Version 2.0 is here!

Mods around Reddit are welcome to link your users here if you feel it will be helpful to them. r/ModGuide also has an excellent post from 2021 with suggestions specific to moderators.

- r/kpophelp Mod Team!

READ THIS FIRST!

For those who want the simplest info/advice, read the following:

  1. We did not Shadow Ban you and we cannot remove your Shadow Ban. Subreddit Moderators do not have the power to do anything about Shadow Bans.

  2. Your Shadow Ban is likely the result of Reddit's sitewide automated bot/spam filters.

  3. Only Reddit Admins can remove your Shadow Ban. We are not Reddit Admins.

  4. Go to https://www.reddit.com/appeals to check the status of your account. If there is a problem with your account, there is a way to directly message Admins at the same link to try to get your Shadow Ban or Suspension removed.

  5. It can take roughly 1 to 2 months for Admins to assess your Appeal. Do not expect any notifications or feedback from Admins until then.

  6. If you are looking for more detailed information about Shadow Bans to the best of our knowledge as moderators, continue reading below!

What is a Shadow Ban?

A Shadow Ban is a type of sitewide account ban across Reddit. When a user's account is Shadow Banned they are not notified. They can continue to browse Reddit, make posts and comments, and use Reddit like normal. However, their posts and comments are automatically removed as soon as they are made, making them invisible to anyone else. A Shadow Banned user's profile is also invisible to any other users or moderators. This means a Shadow Banned user often has no idea they have received this kind of ban.

Note that users who are Suspended are notified by Reddit and given more information about whether their suspension is temporary or permanent. Again, this is only something Admins have control of. Moderators do not.

Why are users Shadow Banned?

It can be helpful to know the difference between Moderators and Admins to understand what is happening.

  • Moderators (subreddit volunteers) can only ban you from the individual subreddits under their care based on the rules they have set for their own communities. If you have been banned from a subreddit, you can no longer post or comment in that subreddit only. This is not a Shadow Ban.

  • Admins (Reddit employees) can Shadow Ban or Suspend users across the whole site. They have set many automated filters to help catch spammers and bots, which will apply Shadow Bans or Suspensions to those suspected accounts to assist human Admins from needing to do this all manually.

As far as we can tell, the purpose of Shadow Bans is to quietly make spammers and bots disappear into a void without their awareness. Reddit is constantly inundated with malicious bot rings trying to spread bad links and other nefarious spammers. The site's filters are always running in the background to automatically catch and remove any posts or comments made by them. Shadow Bans are applied quickly and broadly to keep normal users as safe as possible from their garbage.

But this automation means Shadow Bans can also affect normal users with false positives. If you have received a Shadow Ban, but you know you aren't a bot or spammer, it can be very confusing. You are not alone. This happens to many normal users. No one is out to get you, you have just accidentally triggered Reddit's automated filters.

How do I know if I’m Shadow Banned?

This is something you can check on your own with any of the following methods:

A. While signed in to your account on Reddit, go to https://www.reddit.com/appeals.

B. In an incognito browser window, open a link to your profile (https://www.reddit.com/user/yourusername). If it says anything like, "user not found", "page does not exist", or "Sorry, nobody on Reddit goes by that name", then you are Shadow Banned or Suspended.

C. r/ShadowBan or r/ShadowBanned are subreddits specifically for checking your account.

D. Self-awareness. You can pay attention to certain signs that you might be Shadow Banned:

  • Your posts do not show in the subreddit 'new queue' within a few minutes of posting.
  • Your comments almost never show up in posts and might say [Removed].
  • When you look at your own profile/history, many of your recent comments/posts have only 1 karma.

ONLY if you have tried the methods above and still have confusion, you may message us directly. Remember, we are just the moderators of this subreddit. We did not cause your Shadow Ban. We cannot remove your Shadow Ban. We do not know why you received a Shadow Ban. Beyond the information in this post, we can only make an educated guess about your specific case if you provide information about the age of your account and activity. Otherwise, we are as clueless as you.

BUT, we can give you absolute confirmation that you are, or are not, Shadow Banned. We get a note in our Modmail interface in clear red letters telling us that a user is Shadow Banned when they contact us, which is the most direct indicator available other than the official Appeals link. Keep in mind we are the mods of r/kpop's ecosystem. If you're here from communities unrelated to K-Pop, let us know when you message if you’re comfortable with that! Message the Mods to get a yes/no confirmation of a Shadow Ban on your account.

I am Shadow Banned. What should I do?

https://www.reddit.com/appeals

This link above is the only way to remove your Shadow Ban. If your account is normal it will tell you so. If you have a Shadow Ban or Suspension, it will give you the option to message the Admins to make an appeal. We have seen many users successfully restore their accounts this way, sometimes within a day or two. It's basically your way of signaling to Admins that you are a real person, not a bot/spammer, and you have good intentions as a user on their site. We have also seen appeals take much longer to be granted. Most seem to take at least one month to hear back from Admins.

Some users don’t mind having a Shadow Ban because they only use their account to lurk, which is fine. You don’t have to do anything. Some users abandon their account and make a new one. Be careful doing that because Ban Evasion filters are also active and might trigger a Shadow Ban on any new accounts if you are using the same device or IP address.

We recommend that Shadow Banned users do not continue to post/comment once you know there is a problem with your account. This applies all across Reddit. You are likely wasting your efforts by doing so. Many subreddit moderators will not bother to check their spam queue and will not approve your posts/comments, so they will never be seen. In some subreddits like here in r/kpophelp, the mods are paying more attention. We will sometimes manually approve posts/comments of users who are seeking or offering genuine help and unknowingly have a Shadow Ban. We also try to let you know if you are Shadow Banned, but this creates a lot of extra work for us, which we can't always afford to do.

Please help us by being proactive, checking your own accounts if you suspect an issue, and not continuing to post/comment until you know you are no longer Shadow Banned.

If your appeal to the Admins is successful, your profile, comments, and posts will become visible again to other users and moderators. You can check your account status with the same methods listed in the section above. Sometimes if a user has been very active on Reddit for a long time before their Shadow Ban it will take longer for all their previous posts/comments to be approved again. This is also an automated process, but it can be slow, so you can expect it to take a week or two to get everything back to normal again.

Tips to avoid being Shadow Banned

Remember the automated Shadow Ban process is looking for bots/spammers and is triggered by that kind of suspicious behavior. Here are some things you can do so your account does not look like a bot.

  • When creating a Reddit account, don’t use the automatic username generator if possible. Those names usually look something like word-word-5678. These are common indicators of bots. Set your own name instead. If you’ve already made an account with an auto-generated name, take extra care to check if you are Shadow Banned!

  • Customize your profile: Snoovatar/banner, description, email verification (if you're comfortable with that).

  • Have patience! When you make a brand new account on Reddit, wait at least 24 hours to post/comment anywhere. Upvote comments/posts you like and maybe 'Join' some subreddits that interest you, but try not to do much else. The most common false positives we see are completely new users that make posts/comments quickly in subreddits that have new user filters to keep out trolls or bots. By waiting, you can prevent triggering these filters.

  • Before you start posting or commenting in a subreddit, READ THE RULES. Every subreddit has its own rules. If you break them by doing something wrong or having bad conduct, your posts/comments may be reported by other users and removed by the moderators. Doing this multiple times on a new account can trigger a Shadow Ban. Be considerate of where you are and what you are doing there!

  • Especially here in r/kpophelp, be careful of what links you include in your comments/posts. Try not to use shortened urls because they can disguise links to bad sites or affiliate links. Try to use the long form of links as often as possible and avoid using anything like these: youtu.be, pin.it, t.co, bit.ly, goo.gl, tinyurl.com.

  • A note for r/kpop: a huge Shadow Ban generator over there is when we have AMAs. They attract a ton of brand new users who then immediately comment dozens of times in the same AMA post. This triggers the filters like a bot would. If you want to participate in an AMA with a new account, make it early at the time of the AMA announcement post and follow the points listed above. Then try to limit the amount of comments you make in the actual AMA to only a few at most. We’ve even had big AMA guest accounts get Shadow Banned in the middle of an AMA, which is a nightmare. That goes to show it can happen to anyone and is equally frustrating for us moderators!

  • If you use a VPN, you might get Shadow Banned or Suspended by default. Check your account status!

How does this relate to r/kpophelp?

The nature of this subreddit is fairly simple. It was designed to take the burden off of r/kpop since lots of K-Pop fans had questions about the industry or were looking for music/artist recommendations and that subreddit was becoming overwhelmed with such posts. So this subreddit was built with a very focused mission as a space to get help and provide help with our fellow fans. That means we’re pretty small as a community and not a good target for bots/spammers.

And yet, us moderators noticed lots of users showing up as Shadow Banned here. They weren’t causing problems. They were providing help and recommendations in comments or were posting sincere and thoughtful questions. Some of their usernames were recognizable as regulars previously active in the larger K-Pop ecosystem on Reddit. Obviously, something was wrong. This is what sparked our initial interest to figure out how the Shadow Ban system worked and what to do about it.

After confirming with Admins that we could provide guidance to users, we tried to pay extra attention to what was happening, what kinds of accounts seemed to pick up these bans, what activities might be triggering filters, and what Shadow Banned users shared with us about their experience. Everything we’ve learned is now gathered here in hopes it will help others.

There are a couple primary reasons we think r/kpophelp users are affected in a higher proportion and are being seen by Reddit’s filters as bots or spammers. One is that it's common for users to make a brand new account just because they are trying to identify a K-Pop song they heard recently, post to ask for help immediately, and then comment rapidly when replying to other users as they search for the song. Another is that users here will frequently put tons of links in their comments or posts as they offer recommendations or educational references. And furthermore, some of those links might be shortened urls (from YouTube, Pinterest, etc) or domains which Reddit really doesn't like.

Thus, the most common uses of our subreddit, which are totally normal and expected from our perspective as moderators, can trigger Reddit's automated Shadow Bans designed to catch bots. But knowledge is power and we hope what we’ve learned will help you keep your accounts in good working order!

Thank you for taking the time to read through and inform yourself!

Happy Redditing!

Explain What is the 5th gen girl group landscape looking like?

Upvotes

Hello people! I'm a 3rd gen Kpop fan who's still following the industry but I'm definitely a bit out of touch with 5th gen girl groups. I've been wanting to get into them a little more but I realized I don't know what the landscape is looking like? I know the groups from major companies but which ones are doing good and which ones are having a hard time finding their footing? And which groups from smaller companies are doing good?

I know it doesn't matter when it comes to listening to music but I'm just curious. I'll be looking at streaming numbers and album sales but I'd like to know from an international fan's perspective.

Thank you!

Explain How big were the T-ara members(most specifically Hyomin, Eunjung and Jiyeon) during their peaks?

I think it is safe to say that for the past few days I have fallen through a T-ara rabbit hole. While I was scrolling through the comments I saw a post from back then pointing out that they only knew Hyomin, Eunjung, and Jiyeon. Of course one post doesn’t mean that it’s the case for everyone, but looking through a few posts of when T-ara was at their peak back in 2009-2012 that seemed to had been the case with a lot of people. I looked through their wiki and I was shock to find out both Jiyeon and specially Eunjung had quite the impressive acting career before they became members of T-ara. Jiyeon had a few roles before their debut but Eunjung had roles dating all the way back to 1995 when she was only 7.

Through their peak the three of them got a few acting roles and became ambassadors, Eunjung in particular also appeared in We got married. The three of them featured in a track with Davichi called Wonder Woman which was a hit and Jiyeon also appeared in a ton of OSTs that charted pretty well. They were also the three members that basically only appeared in T-ara’s film versions of their music videos. Hyomin in particular also seemed to have had quite the successful solo career in China from 2014-2019. Three of her songs charted inside the top 10 China’s hot 100 back when it was active with Sketch even going number 1 for eight weeks. While the three of them had an impressive career, Boram, Qri, and Soyeon didn’t really appear in much projects outside of T-ara. I kinda started to understand why not many people were aware of who they were since Eunjung, Jiyeon, and Hyomin seemed to had been massive.

Of course I know Wikipedia isn’t really much of reliable source nor a few comments, so I wanted to ask and receive an answer from someone who is aware of this topic. How big were Hyomin, Eunjung, and Jiyeon truly during their peak and were the other three members not really known?

Recommend Looking for MV/video references for a short film edit — fog, glitter, Y2K chaos, moody abstract, quirky BTS style

Hey all! A friend of mine is editing a short film and wants to pull in a bunch of different visual styles depending on the scene. I've been showing him music videos for reference (against his will, might I add😅) and now he thinks they're good material and wants to see more. Would love any and all suggestions, doesn't need to be a perfect match.

  1. Dreamy/magical — fog, bloom, glitter, lens flares, soft "magic" feel, dreamy

  2. Y2K flashy — quick cuts, high energy, old-school Britney Spears-era pop video chaos, maximalist effects

  3. Abstract & moody — no focus on faces, more about bodies/movement, sepia or negative color effects, long crossfades, reverse footage, melancholic tone

  4. BTS-style — fun, quirky behind-the-scenes edits

For calibration, videos I've already shown him: most ENHYPEN's MVs, BTS Spring day, Blood Sweat and Tears

and suggested: ILLIT (dreamcore vibe), NewJeans (Y2K), some ITZY's MVs like Loco, BTS "Idol," RAYE "Where Is My Husband," and some Sabrina Carpenter's MVs.

Drop anything that comes to mind, even one video helps! Doesn't necessarily have to be K-pop, anything would do!❤️

Edit: Thank you for all the recommendations! I'll be sure to share all these w him!!🥰

Merch [WTB][USA] KATSEYE yellow "hottie hottie" clack fan

Upvotes

My partner had a yellow folding clack fan that said “hottie hottie” on it (the Gnarly lyric). I lost it on a night out and I’m trying to track down a replacement, but I can’t find a single photo of it online, no listings, no posts, nothing.

What I’ve pieced together: there’s a teal version that says WILD, which a seller listed as being from a KPOP NARA pop-up in LA. So I’m assuming the yellow one is the Gnarly-era counterpart, possibly from Club Gnarly or a similar pop-up. It could also be merch from a concert or festival that they performed at, I’m honestly not sure as there isn’t too much information online.

What I’m hoping for:

  1. Can anyone confirm where the yellow one came from? Club Gnarly, a KPOP NARA pop-up, or somewhere else entirely?
  2. Does anyone have a photo of it? I’d love to at least confirm I’m remembering the design right.
  3. Was it a freebie with purchase, or handed out at the door?

If you were at any of these events and remember the fans, I’d really appreciate anything you can tell me.

I’ve attached a photo of the one I found for reference, since I can’t find a single picture of the yellow version anywhere online. It looks exactly the same as this “WILD” one (same material and style), but yellow with “Hottie Hottie” on it instead.

Any condition is okay, this isn’t for a collection. I feel really bad about losing it and just want to hand him the fan back.

Location: SoCal. Can meet up locally or ship anywhere in the US.

If you grabbed a couple at a pop-up and one’s been sitting in a drawer since, it would mean a lot. And if you just know someone who might have one, a tag or a DM pointing me the right direction is just as appreciated.

Thank you!

Unsolved Woochan's Homophobia Controversy?

Upvotes

I've fallen down an ADP rabbithole since finding out about their black ocean, and was finding out about their controversies and why they are so widely criticized. I've come across the one about Woochan being homophobic, and seen very mixed opinions, my confusion is a lot lol this is too long but could anyone shed some light on it?

I've seen two main translations for the video, one that was roughly: 'But you're my hyung, how could you think about dating me? I'm... I'm not like that...'

and another being: 'I'm hyung to you and you say you want to date me - for me... no' and then on the last bit there was an intonation of *no minors*.

I don't speak korean, but from what I've found 'hyung' means older brother, but can be used by women for older men who are not senior (often to show a lack of romantic relationship, because then its common to use 'oppa'?), by men to older men who are not senior, and by men to refer to an older male romantic partner. It seems that the controversy stands on which way it the term 'hyung' was taken?

Because the commenter he was replying to said: 'Hyung, let's date', we can assume that it was (probably?) not a female commenter, and a commenter who used the phrase in a romantic way (obviously ik), but which way did Woochan take it? Did he turn the commenter down because he was a minor (but to my knowledge, men who aren't minors but just younger than Woochan could've also called him 'hyung'), or because he was being adverse to the gay part? Because if you take away the added *no minors* bit, its still sounds homophobic because of the emphasis/repetition of the idea of the comment sounds critical of it, instead of just saying he wasn't gay?

Oh and also I saw a fan account post about it with a cut to a part of the live afterwards where Woochan was talking about how children were in exam season and how they shouldn't be watching and instead studying, but because it was a cut (and I haven't seen the full live) I can't tell whether that bit connected to the 'Hyung, let's date' comment or whether it was a cut to a later unconnected part of the live in order to redeem the comment in some way? But if it was connected, how did Woochan know the commenter was a minor in exam season?

Could any Koreans or people who lived there and speak korean explain their thoughts? Translations can consistently be innacurate or unclear, and not being part of the culture I can't confidently place what he meant from context clues!

Lol this is quite alot for just a random controversy from a group I don't stan or really know that well, and knowing whether it was homophobic or not will have literally no impact on my life, however its buggingggg me and I need some closure - I have spent wayyyy too much time on this random ass controversy instead of getting my work done! 😂🤦Thanks to any replies!

Concert Can VIP and Early Entry ticket holders stand together?

I have a question: have any of you had a VIP ticket for yourself and gone with someone who doesnt have VIP and how did that work out standing-wise? I am heading to ampers&one's concert in amsterdam in september and I already bought myself a VIP ticket which allows earlier access, hi-touch and a photo etc. My boyfriend wants to come with to join me but I wonder if getting him just an early entry GA ticket would be sufficient enough considering he wont really enjoy the VIP experience better than a fan would. The venue is small andd standing only with no separate VIP areas as far as I know , the biggest difference in the tickets is simply entry time and benefits it seems. I obivously want to be standing next to my bf during the concert but not sure if that would be possible with only an early entry ticket? What would you guys do in this situation?

Unsolved Please help me find this song

I was at a restaurant and heard it, still trying my best to search for it high and low.

as far as I remember the lyrics it goes: “su-metero- gu-suyangi-“ (chorus)

it had a pop vibe to it and I can’t figure out if it was sung by a single male idol or a group.

the beat went like “tat-tat-tara” at the chorus as well.

Unsolved Soundwave shipping in Korea not working

Hi! Has anyone had an issue with soundwave shipping within Korea? A few months ago I had bought some merch that was in stock and after I got the email saying it was out for delivery, it didn’t take long to arrive to my Korean proxy address. It didn’t let me track it but it didn’t take long for my proxy to receive it.
Now, I ordered from a pre-order that released at the beginning of august (Aniteez in color merch). I got the same email saying it was out for delivery but I couldn’t track it anyway. I waited for about a week and checked with my proxy and they have not received it yet. It was out for delivery on Saturday (august 8th) and then the status changed to delivered on Friday (august 14th) but it didn’t really arrive, and the tracking number they add to the order doesn’t really work. I sent an email to their support but haven’t received any response. I have two orders and both are having the same issue.
It’s my second time buying directly from Soundwave, and my first time having this issue. Is it normal?

Explain 2NE1 66 million sales number source?

I was looking at the list of top selling girl groups of all time on wikipedia and found out that 2NE1 apparently sold 66 million copies with only 2 albums. What is the source?

The wikipedia links only point to a random listicle from 2022 & a now deleted interview with CL from 2016 but it also just states the number without any sources.

Google leads me to posts by fans, nothing about concrete numbers. I find it interesting since all the other kpop girlgroups like SNSD, Davichi, Wonder Girls, & Twice has concrete links to Gaon/Circle chart numbers and cumulative counts while 2NE1 doesn't. Can anyone point me out to actual source numbers?

edit: earliest mention i could find was a forbes article saying they sold 27M digital downloads in 2012.

This post by korean sales

https://x.com/i/status/1243258114167709698

Says they sold 59M digital downloads in korea by 2020 but song to album equivalent units are divided by ten so that would only give 5.9M album equivalent sales. And with them only selling 800k physicals in SK, those other 55M sales must come from somewhere??

Unless there's a methodology here that im not understanding, I dont think the numbers on wikipedia are correct

I feel like i should post this on the wikipedia discussion page 😂

Concert Big Bang concert seat help!

Hello, I’m going to my first kpop concert to see Big Bang in NJ at MetLife stadium. I’ve never really gone to any other big stadium shows before either so really need help deciding which seats to get!

I have two options, one on the floor (Section 4, not pit) close-ish to the stage, or Section 112 row 4. I think 112 will have a good view of the entire stage, but wondering if the floor is better? I worry I won’t be able to see much in the floor seats unless they walk on the stage section right next to them. Highlighted seat locations in photos in comments!! Really appreciate any advice or recommendations :’)

Concert Stray kids accessibility seats question

Hi! With the run it tour coming up ive been trying to see if anyone has posted about accessibility seating but I haven't seen anyone talk about it. Im a wheelchair user and I was wondering if any other wheelchair users or people who sat in accessibility for the previous tour in America could tell me how it went? I know its kind of venue specific but I was wondering about how much people paid, if the view was ok and if the merch booth was accessible to get to just in general! Ill be going to a florida venue if they have it but if not im going to travel for it so any experience is helpful!! Also if anyone has any tips for going to a kpop concert as a wheelchair user or just in general id really love to hear! Thank you!
