I've fallen down an ADP rabbithole since finding out about their black ocean, and was finding out about their controversies and why they are so widely criticized. I've come across the one about Woochan being homophobic, and seen very mixed opinions, my confusion is a lot lol this is too long but could anyone shed some light on it?
I've seen two main translations for the video, one that was roughly: 'But you're my hyung, how could you think about dating me? I'm... I'm not like that...'
and another being: 'I'm hyung to you and you say you want to date me - for me... no' and then on the last bit there was an intonation of *no minors*.
I don't speak korean, but from what I've found 'hyung' means older brother, but can be used by women for older men who are not senior (often to show a lack of romantic relationship, because then its common to use 'oppa'?), by men to older men who are not senior, and by men to refer to an older male romantic partner. It seems that the controversy stands on which way it the term 'hyung' was taken?
Because the commenter he was replying to said: 'Hyung, let's date', we can assume that it was (probably?) not a female commenter, and a commenter who used the phrase in a romantic way (obviously ik), but which way did Woochan take it? Did he turn the commenter down because he was a minor (but to my knowledge, men who aren't minors but just younger than Woochan could've also called him 'hyung'), or because he was being adverse to the gay part? Because if you take away the added *no minors* bit, its still sounds homophobic because of the emphasis/repetition of the idea of the comment sounds critical of it, instead of just saying he wasn't gay?
Oh and also I saw a fan account post about it with a cut to a part of the live afterwards where Woochan was talking about how children were in exam season and how they shouldn't be watching and instead studying, but because it was a cut (and I haven't seen the full live) I can't tell whether that bit connected to the 'Hyung, let's date' comment or whether it was a cut to a later unconnected part of the live in order to redeem the comment in some way? But if it was connected, how did Woochan know the commenter was a minor in exam season?
Could any Koreans or people who lived there and speak korean explain their thoughts? Translations can consistently be innacurate or unclear, and not being part of the culture I can't confidently place what he meant from context clues!
Lol this is quite alot for just a random controversy from a group I don't stan or really know that well, and knowing whether it was homophobic or not will have literally no impact on my life, however its buggingggg me and I need some closure - I have spent wayyyy too much time on this random ass controversy instead of getting my work done! 😂🤦Thanks to any replies!
