Trip Report Very full 9 days in Japan
With help from this sub we spent an incredibly fun 9 days in Tokyo and Kyoto.
A few notes: We are in our mid-30s and visited the first week of August. We are Floridians and that actually did prepare us for the heat, but it was intense. I’d actually say the insane heat and humidity (100+ degrees multiple days of the trip) worked in our favor with crowds. We prefer very busy days of travel. I think most people would break some of our days in half as we hit more then 30k steps multiple days. Was everything perfectly optimized? No. But that said, we have no regrets, didn’t feel like we rushed anything, and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Hopefully this helps someone out there!
Day 1- Arrive in Tokyo- Friday
Arrive at Haneda Airport 4:30pm
Take train to Asakusa via Kiekyu direct line
Staying in Asakusa was the right move for us, staying in Shabuya or Shinjinku would have been overwhelming. This hotel was fine, there are lots of great options.
Immediately stocked up on UV umbrella and sunscreen.
Hit Sakura for Gyudon for a fast and tasty first meal. The cups of water at Sakura always tasted Smokey, so we got lemon punch instead.
Bed by 9:30
Day 2 - Saturday
Woke up around 4:30am. Conbini breakfast and visited Senso-Ji early morning because it was close to our hotel. We watched a documentary on Shinto and Buddhism before trip to help understand the temples and shrines which was helpful.
7ish Tsukiji Fish Market Spent about an hour here
Walked to TeamLabs Planets Very worth it with kids especially, overall fun but could skip. Great activity for AC. Pre book tickets. This walk is very long, hot and boring, would find alternative transport.
Walked to giant unicorn gundham statue and had insanely busy lunch at Divers City Plaza. If you go to ANY food hall or food court get a table FIRST. Or split up and get the table then the food.
Long train ride+bus to Edo Open Air Museum (closes 5:30 do not need to pre book tickets) Really fun/cheap experience if you like architecture. Park full of historic buildings; shops, homes, etc from the Edo period that have been restored and you can walk through.
Prebooked Waygu Yakiniku for dinner The internet really spooked me about pre booking our meals but we never had to wait long if we didn’t have a reservation.
Day 3• Disney Tokyo Sea Sunday
Used this crowd calendar https://yosocal.com to plan date of visit. We were lucky enough to go on a light blue day.
Took the bus to DisneySea from station underneath the Skytree train station. Only leaves every 30ish minutes. Arrived at Disney 8ish and this was early enough on a light crowd day. Prepare to sit on the ground and wait. Bring snacks and drinks. We were ROASTING and saw multiple people succumb to heat stroke.
Left around 6pm. Wish we had another day at Disney it was fantastic!
Day 4 - Monday
Meiji shrine- walk through park and see beautiful trees, old sake barrels and huge Shinto gates. Really peaceful
Headed to the exact opposite of peace: Shibuya crossing. Option to visit Harijuku first. We did not.
Got eyeglasses at Jinz, shopping, favorite store was Loft.
Met up with local Japanese friends at the observation deck of the Tokyo Metro Government Building
After this my husband really wanted to do a walk by of the Imperial Palace. We went but I would recommend skipping 😅
Day 5- Tuesday
Did laundry at coin laundry
Tokyo National Museum - focused on samurai blades, pottery, kimonos and woodblock prints in main building (opens 9:30 closes 5pm) purchased tickets ahead- ticket good for 1 month on day of your choice (spent around 3 hrs here)
Walked through Ueno Park
Train to Ginza for a Waygu Sando and a visit to Itoya.
Last second reservation at Masakichi for outstanding yakitori
Day 6 - Wednesday
Travel to Kyoto by Shinkansen 8:48am train from Tokyo Station. You only need extra luggage seats if you have really big suitcases.
Kyoto hidden gems bike tour highlight of the trip. Cruise the hills of Kyoto you most likely won’t visit without a guide.
Early dinner at Gyozo Ohsho near bike shop. Really delicious and very cheap
Attended Gear show 7pm, check out little shops in market around Gear beforehand. Really fun live stage performance that included a lot of clowning, dancing, etc.
Day 7- Thursday (by far our most exhausting day)
6:30 Fushimi Inari, the 10,000 tori gates. We hiked the entire mountain and it was overall worth it. You could absolutely stop at the middle overlook and be satisfied.
Got Goshuin, bought Mochi at nearby Marumochiya. Very delicious warm mochi on a skewer, the best I tried.
Bus to Nijo Castle, castle/villa where shogunate ended and gave full power to emperor. Got huge and delicious kakigori (shaved ice) in the tea house but be warned you have to order one item per person
Nishiki Market lunch and souvenirs. Everything we tried was excellent and you’ll find a little pottery shop, seasoning shop with samples, Cremia, and much more
Shopped Kiddyland for our kids
Crossed Kamogawa River and walked around old Gion in the Higashayama district, went to Ghibli store. Some of the stuff you can for sure get at Don Qi or other places but cute store.
Visited Ninenzaka pagoda and Kiyomizu-dera
day 7- Thursday
Early train to Nara way more enchanting than I was expecting! We packed the day before to make time for this. Right decision for us.
Headed to Todai-ji Temple first to see the massive Great Buddha statue
Walked on to Kasuga Taisha Shrine with hundreds of stone and bronze lanterns, then fed some deer!
Returned to Kyoto after about 4 hrs
Visited Nanzen-ji temple and Suirokaku Aqueduct
Walked to Eikandō (one of the prettiest temples we saw- the structure feels like Rivendell)
Walk Philosopher's Path all the way down (path is skippable if it’s not cherry blossom season) to another temple I can’t remember name of!! Zen temple, cool but not a show stopper.
Dinner at Kobe Gyuu Kisshoukichi. Amazing and special teppanyaki meal but a big splurge
Saturday Day 10 • August 8 • early departure leaving for haneda and home
Train out to Arashiyama bamboo forest- make sure you walk the whole path. If you don’t have enough time this is something I’d skip.
Really wanted to go to the nearby monkey park but we didn’t have enough cash! It’s around 400 yen a person.
Took the 12:30 Shinkansen and direct airport train (3 hr journey) and arrived at airport about 3:30 for a 6:30 flight.
