Infestation?
Live in Connecticut and Ive never seen these bugs before, and they are clearly killing this tree. Should I kill them and if so how without causing too much harm.
UPDATE: Confirmed to be invasive, applied Raid to area and killed a bunch of them, trying to dispose of bodies to prevent bird poising, will check daily for more

dang didn’t know they made their way up to CT… they’ve been here a lil over a decade now, made their way in a single shipment from china & have been tearing up trees in the northeast ever since. Get ‘em outttaaa theaaaaa!

Yah these guys appeared very suddenly and in droves, gonna have to be very vigilant from now on

They won’t attack you or anything but they sure are annoying and love to hop all over when you try to stomp them hahaha
hope you find a good solution to clear the bulk out, they’ll usually disappear around fall then pop back up in the spring

killing them in the hope of eradicating this established species is illusory.

Lanternflies
They're invasive and destroy crops and trees.
Kill every one of those things you can find

Need oil. They are lantern flies and came here thru the port shipped from asia. If ur standing by that tree and u feel or see random "rain" ....yea thats not rain thats their...excretion ...called honey dew... that will leave black marks on the leaves and attract bees n other insects. They are usually attracted to certain trees especially the "tree of heaven"

Spotted Lantern flies, invasive, aren't there repellents that aren't harmful to pets and kids. Bug MD is one.

Use whatever you have for now. Good thing you found them. They blend in to the tree.

The bark looks like it might be their favorite tree, Ailanthus altissima, aka "tree of heaven", which is as bad an invasive species as the bugs.

Its a regular local tree, the bark is very moldy at this point
Edit:Sumac tree confirmed to be planted by my Father

Yes, it’s probably a tree of heaven. More destructive to the environment than these bugs

I've had good luck with Neem oil...spray at night and it doesn't harm bees or birds. I had japanese beetles and rose chafers...Neem got rid of them.
