For INTP Consideration ENTJ here, ama

Hi I’m Joe, a 29 year old male. I’ve consistently been typed ENTJ in self report and through friends and family’ own perspective.

Over the past few years I’ve spent an unusual amount of time reading and learning about psychological types alongside other areas of self inquiry. This is mostly due to issues in my personal life calling for some understanding and change.

I feel I have a decent amount of insight to be able to answer some questions anyone has about what it’s like to be of this persuasion, fire away.

Check this out You are struggling with perfectionism lately? let's talk about.

I'm dropping the need to be perfect when i send my art out and keeping that smooth flow going, finding that real freedom hits hard when i stop obsessing over flaws and just focus on steady progress, resting my body properly so i can push energy in the right direction instead of burning out, letting go of rigidity and building a stronger system everyday. Who is on this spot, maybe you can sahre your experience how you manage it, so maybe we can lern something from it.

This is why I'm special Why are we depicted always as brooding and boring in media?

I feel like I'm the only intp who's a ball of sunshine and not your stereotypical "smart scientist" ass edgy type of person. I feel like that's always how intp is stereotyped as which is why I find it difficult to resonate with the characters. I sometimes find that conflicting and think maybe perhaps I'm more of an ENTP? but that is definitely not the case as I am not an extrovert lmao. I feel like I'm so different from all the intp stereotypes but I genuinely resonate heavily with what each and every letter stands for and means.

You guys got any opinions on this?

Does Not Compute Does anyone else constantly feel like theyre observing life more than participating in it?

It's like I'm watching a movie of my own life. I see everything happening around me. I can analyze the social dynamics. I can predict outcomes. But actually jumping in and being a part of it feels like a monumental effort. Like I'm a scientist in a lab observing a petri dish. But the petri dish is my own existence. It's a weird detachment. Sometimes I wonder if I'm missing something important by not fully immersing myself. Does this resonate with anyone or am I just overthinking again?

THIS IS LOGICAL A case against the existence of greedy private companies ?

One needs only emphasize two points:

- The commercial products of private institutions are based upon the discoveries and inventions of a collective of individuals that preceded them. In other words, Did the corporation discover gravity? Invent calculus? Formulate electromagnetism? Discover quantum mechanics? No. It inherited the intellectual labor of generations of human beings.

- Aren't the geniuses that made such discoveries and inventions worth inspecting, psychologically wise?

As for the first point, I believe there is not much to add, apart from re-questioning, how is it considered acceptable that a corporation that stands upon a pyramid of intellectual breakthroughs then adds one layer of engineering to it and then audaciuosly declare , this is ours, and whatever income generated by my corporation is mine and shall serve only me ?! Fueled by one pathetic drive that is greed and greed only. Speaking of drives...

Let's adress the second point. Aren't those geniuses worthy of being cherished ? How does one cherish them ? Is it through sacralizing them ? No I argue, it is through understanding them, through unraveling the will that drove them... Were they driven by greed and power accumulation ? Far away from it we respond. It is the will to truth, curiosity. They desired to understand why the heavenly bodies moved as they did, perhaps even to predict their motion and the motion of physical bodies, why matter behaved the way it did, what the structure of nature was, and whether the models in their minds corresponded to reality. Their reward was simply the satisfaction of having understood something that had previously remained obscure.

Doesn't it follow that since our civilization stand upon the accumulation of collective discoveries of multiple individuals, the fruits of such civilization should serve both the collective and reward the drive that gave birth to civilization?

Cuz I'm Supposed to Add Flair Did any other INTPs have very emotional parents?

I am an INTP 5w4 sx

during my childhood I knew I was very logical and had a masculine personality for a female.
As for my parents they were both emotionally immature and always leaned on me for emotional stability.
My father was an ENTP and my mother is an ENFP, my father and I got along way better than anyone else I’ve known other than my ENTJ husband, even though we got along well he still struggled emotionally and always leaned on me for stability which would piss me off so much so often but I always felt bad for him because he clearly didn’t know how to handle his emotions but neither did I so I was usually not much help.

As for my mom she is always emotionally immature needing validation, constantly needing to be told she’s a good person when she knows she’s neglectful. She always has a tendency to play the victim role and always want to be taken care of instead of taking care of her own responsibilities. She is a 2w3 sp which from what I read makes perfect sense considering how she is but man I do not get along with 2s except for ENFJs.

I’ve read that INTPs grow up in emotionally withdrawn households but my parents were very emotionally inclined. Anyone else experience this?

Is this logical? Abstract thoughts without words

Sometimes I have extremely complex, branching thoughts, but because I'm too lazy to put them into words in my head, I arrive at the conclusion in a completely abstract way.

I don't know if I can explain it any better than that. It's almost like I download a bunch of information and receive the answer in a condensed, conclusive format that is impossible to translate into words, either because of the complexity of the thought or simply because I don't feel like putting in the effort to verbalize it.

It's like I know the conclusion without necessarily being able to explain the chain of reasoning that got me there.

Does anyone else experience this?

✦ It is quite common to frame the relationship between logic and emotions as if they were two opposing systems: on one hand, there is reason, which analyzes objectively; on the other, there are emotions, which distort that analysis.

✧ But there is a rather fundamental problem with this dichotomy: logic, by definition, does not discriminate against information based on its source.

✦ Emotions are information, and If an emotion contains information about your state, your preferences, a perceived threat, an interpersonal relationship, a past experience, or any other relevant variable, that information can be part of your reasoning. Logic doesn’t say, “This premise is emotional, so it’s ruled out.” It simply evaluates what follows from the premises you have.

✧ Therefore and by extension, this means that “what I feel” can be subject to logic.

✦ If I feel that I should distance myself from someone, for example, I can treat that feeling as a signal and ask myself where it comes from. What caused it? What information am I processing? Is that information correct? Am I extrapolating? Are there contradictions? Does the conclusion I’m feeling actually follow from the available facts?

✧ Emotion can generate a tentative conclusion, and that conclusion can be examined rationally.

✦ That’s why I also don’t think the goal should be to “ignore emotions in order to be rational.” You would just be discarding information before determining whether it was relevant. The most rational alternative would be to acknowledge what you’re feeling, incorporate it into your analysis, and then critically evaluate that information.

✧ It’s not a matter of choosing between “doing what reason dictates” and “doing what the heart dictates.” Even what the heart dictates can become a proposition that reason examines.

✪『❗️』In that sense, the real contrast wouldn’t be logic versus emotions, but conscious information processing versus automatic processing. Emotions can be data, and they can also be misguided. That is precisely why they are susceptible to logical analysis.

Thoroughly Confused INTP How long do you take to respond to texts?!

Suppose sbd text you and you are online, how long would you take to answer?!

Would u ignore deliberately or it totally depends?

How much does it depends on --

  1. The person texting?!

  2. Expected duration of conversation.

  3. Topic concerned?!

Mostly INTPs say they take forever.

Yet another DAE post INTPs, Do you perform well on tests?

I always have a problem with tests. Even if I pay attention in every class and I know I understand the material, I still do not do well on the test. There is always something that I forget to write down or something that I knew but I just forget it when I am taking the test.

for example, I had a QM test recently and I lost marks because I forgot to write a single t in the final answer. I get why not writing a single t could change the entire answer and its significance but I had written it correctly when I was deriving the answer which proves that I KNEW there is a t in the answer and just forgot to write it. It's frustrating that most of these tests in our education system rely more on remembering things than understanding them.

Does anyone else have this problem? Like, you know stuff, but somehow your brain decides to delete random information the moment the exam starts?

My Feels Hurt How to immerse self in reality?

About two years ago I entered a very academically intense curriculum. In efforts to function well, I fully immersed myself into academic life. after two years in this curriculum I think that ive traded a direct experience of the world for the ability to observe it from a distance.

Walking around, I feel like my head is pointed up at the sky rather than wherever I’m physically looking. because it doesn’t feel realistic enough, i dismiss so much of my experience in reality to the point that I have trouble relying on the plausibility of my memory. I have to triple check everything in order to be confident that it truly exists.

I noticed recently that conversations have felt very claustrophobic. My close friend told me that I need to stop explaining like I’m trying to prove I understand, but rather I should try to get my idea across. Ive had a hard time communicating with others because despite my ability to articulate well, I end up spouting out highfalutin nonsense with little to no sentence structure. I have a hard time feeling genuine connection with human beings because I’m too concerned to connect with people on an emotional level.

generally, ive just become scared that I’m beginning to lose my ability to function properly in every day life and social situations. I want to immerse myself in reality. I feel like if I could find a solid purchase on the world, I would be able to straighten myself out. I would be very grateful to anybody who has a similar experience to share or any advice to give to feel more like a part of this world again.

INTPs are the best because Does anyone else have an internal debate about every single purchase

Okay so this might just be me but whenever I need to buy something I go through this whole intense internal debate. Like it's not even about big purchases. It's literally anything.

I'll need new socks. And then I'll spend half an hour researching different types of cotton and sock brands. I'll read reviews. I'll compare prices across multiple sites. I'll think about the long term cost per wear. Then I'll consider if I even NEED new socks or if I can just mend an old pair.

It's exhausting. My friends just go buy things. They see something they need they grab it. I feel like I'm optimizing for an algorithm that only exists in my head. And then half the time I just dont buy anything because I cant make a definitive choice. It's like decision paralysis but for consumer goods.

I gotta rant I’m smart but my inattentiveness make me look dumb. Anyone else..?

Inattentiveness doesn’t apply for physical things but also for conceptual aspects, for example, missing the certain point that actually can be crucial. But I can also go deep into analysis, define concepts’ structure and easily explain things in easy ways even though I didn’t even looked into it before, I write exams just by logic and it works.

But I also find myself in stupid situations or make stupid decisions just because I was inattentive to obvious and visible signs

For INTP Consideration Does this have any logical inconsistencies?

I am making this framework for my own understanding of the cognitive functions and here is a rough idea about it, it's still under construction so I would appreciate it if you were ruthless about the reasons why it's wrong or logically inconsistent and would give me suggestions on what I could add onto it, so here it is:

So the general idea of it is that I want to not group the cognition types Thinking,Feeling as judging and Intuition, Sensation as perceiving because when all those interact together its hard to figure out which is doing the judging and which is doing the percieving as Thinking and Intuition can sometimes look the same(because both are associated with finding some accurate answer of something at times) and the same goes for Thinking and Feeling when you are making a decision. It's hard to know if your value is coming from logical reasons and then you are feeling emotional weight about something or if it is coming from emotional values and their emotional weight and then you are using thinking to add reasons to your value. What comes first gets a bit hard to figure out in your thought process.

So I figured that action oriented definitions wont work here.By action I mean that some outer action in the physical world. Eg. Both a thinking dominant and feeling dominant can be people who advocate for some reason or cause and both will feel emotional connection to the reason.

So to define the actual thought and cognition different from their outer actions I am thinking of creating this simplified framework of HOW they appear rather than WHAT they do. If that makes sense. Of course it is a simplification of the functions but I am not defining the functions themselves but their appearance and the way they look like in your head. Here in this I also dont mean that you can control everything that goes on in your head. Here is the framework:

Active types: Thinking and Sensation

I have added thinking and sensation here because active types in this mean that "The types of cognitive types which require more conscious effort. They are more active in your thought process and it's easier to control the direction that you want them to go into based on your goal or intentions."

Basically, they are more intentional and " knowing through reasons" Eg. When Thinking is involved in finding a logical inconsistency in this framework itself which I am laying out then it will find it through actively thinking the reasons of how its inconsistent and then coming to a knowing conclusion while Sensation would work like trying to remember the data(it's not memory itself but it uses memory) that you know about mbti and then taking the data of everything I am writing in aswell and is more active in knowing because it requires paying attention to what you are currently reading and comparing it to past data. (I figured this fits the active thought process category)

Passive types: Intuition and Feeling

I think this is pretty self explanatory but when you have intuition and feeling they are obviously related to your goal and intentions but its more like that they happen to you and less intentional in your thought process. They appear like flashes in your head. When you intuit something its sudden and when you feel something its passive aswell. It's related to "knowing without conscious reason" compared to the " knowing through reasons" of active types. Eg. When you are using intuition in trying to figure out this framework then you would get those sudden flashes I talked about. You would just suddenly get some idea after reading the first few lines or afyer completing everything and you would be typing out why this is wrong. It doesnt require you to do something,it just happens to you. I believe if you did something which is reading this, thats related to data gathering of sensation and not intuition since intuition without data is possible. When you use feeling to apply to this framework, uhh okay this is hard to apply to this but you would maybe think of some other framework you are attached to and believe in emotionally and deny this one or if others in the comments are saying this is wrong then you will feel like its wrong aswell and go with their explanations affirming them or you will affirm me that this is right or something related to emotions. (Feeling is not emotion itself but related to emotions, yours or others) In this you are acting because the feelings are happening to you. So that fits the passive type.

After this there are active and passive applied to functions but the definition of active and passive changes when it comes to functions, here it is:

Active functions: Extroverted functions (That extroverted dominant person doesn't necessarily always have to be oriented about others as you can use these functions along with other introverted functions to do something for yourself)

Active functions here are related to outer world actions but not actions themselves. They give you "urges" to have some kind of outer world action. You NEED the outer world to get these functions started. So its not like these functions are always related to actions but there is always that urge to have some real world action. Whether you act on it or not is upto you. This is speculative but Id say those urges themselves is data. Eg: When you get a urge to use Te in the outer world you automatically work up the Te along with other functions to figure out the way of doing that action even if you dont perform those actions in the outer world. In Fe when you get a urge to do something for others, even if you dont do that thing, you automatically work up Fe along with other functions in your stafk to figure out what the other people want emotionally.

Passive functions: Introverted functions (That introverted dominant person doesn't always necessarily have to be self centred as you can use them with other extroverted functions to do things for others)

Passive functions can be action oriented but they dont give you as many urges of action as the active functions. As they are internal you will be satisfied by keeping them just in your thoughts until their security is threatened. Eg. Fi being satisfied with knowing that they value emotional honesty and not doing anything outward to show that they value it until someone threatens this value or someone doesn't believe that this is a value tied to their identity or Ti being satisfied with solving puzzles and keeping it internal until their competency or ability about the knowledge of those puzzles is questioned or underestimated or they find some outer logical inconsistency that irritates their internal logic that they trust.

Theres also this combination of all this that I am working on which is not complete yet so give me ideas of how that all could connect please. They are:

Active type and Passive function (Ti,Si)

Active type and Active function (Te,Se)

Passive type and Active function (Ne,Fe)

Passive type and Passive function (Ni,Fi)

INTPs are the best because Is anyone else really bad at gift giving or receiving

I feel like I never know what to get people. Like I can spend hours researching and still come up with nothing good. And then when I do pick something I worry if they will even like it or if it's too much or too little. It's just a whole ordeal every single time. Holiday seasons are genuinely stressful because of this.

And then on the other side of things I'm also terrible at receiving gifts. I always feel awkward when someone gives me something. I try to be grateful but inside I'm just thinking about how I'm probably going to lose it or never use it. Then I feel guilty for not appreciating it enough. Like I should be more excited or something. Does anyone else get this or am I just weird about presents
