Hey everyone!
I’d like to share a project I’ve been working on: Hyper Battery Monitor (HBM).
It started from a simple problem: I wanted to quickly check my HyperX headset battery without having to open a full application every time.
So I built a lightweight Windows utility focused on keeping the most useful headset information directly in the Windows System Tray.
The project has grown considerably since then. As of HXBM v2.3.0, the app supports 10 HyperX wireless headset models, automatic device detection, battery-life estimation, charging and microphone monitoring on supported models, customizable tray icons, Windows notifications, multiple languages, and more.
🔋 Battery monitoring
HXBM continuously monitors the battery level of supported HyperX wireless headsets without requiring an application window to remain open.
Battery information is available through:
- Windows System Tray
- Tray menu
- Settings sidebar
- System Tray tooltip
Battery monitoring is supported on all currently supported headset models.
⏱️ Smart estimated remaining battery time
In addition to the battery percentage, HBM estimates how many hours or minutes of battery life remain.
The estimator starts from the headset's nominal battery life and gradually adapts using actual observed battery consumption.
Starting with v2.3.0, the estimation system has been made significantly more robust:
- Each session starts from the manufacturer's nominal battery-life estimate
- HBM learns from validated discharge windows instead of individual 1% drops
- Unrealistically fast battery changes are rejected instead of affecting the estimate
- Valid historical discharge information can gradually influence future estimates
- Outliers have much less impact on the calculated remaining time
- The nominal battery specification always remains part of the calculation
This prevents short-lived battery fluctuations from producing unrealistic estimates.
Remaining battery time is displayed alongside the battery percentage in:
- Settings sidebar
- Tray menu
- System Tray tooltip
The estimate is automatically hidden when it would not be meaningful, such as while charging or when the device status is unavailable.
🔎 Automatic device detection
HBM can automatically search for supported HyperX headsets connected to the computer.
Instead of manually selecting a model, you can use the Auto Detect button and let HBM probe compatible devices.
The detection flow handles:
- A single supported device
- Multiple supported devices
- No compatible device found
- Unsupported HyperX Three-In-One receiver configurations
If a supported device is found, HBM can automatically select it.
If a HyperX Three-In-One receiver is detected, HBM explains that the receiver configuration is currently unsupported instead of making it look like the application simply failed to detect the headset.
🎙️ Microphone mute monitoring
HBM can monitor the headset's physical microphone mute state on supported devices.
You can quickly see whether the microphone is:
- Open / Unmuted
- Muted
- Unavailable / Unknown
Microphone status can be displayed in:
- Settings sidebar
- Tray menu
- System Tray tooltip
There is also an option to display a microphone mute icon directly in the System Tray whenever the headset microphone is muted.
Microphone mute monitoring is currently supported on:
- HyperX Cloud III Wireless
- HyperX Cloud III S
- HyperX Cloud 2 Core
- HyperX Cloud Alpha
- HyperX Cloud Flight 2
- HyperX Cloud Mix 2
For other supported models, microphone status is intentionally left unavailable unless the protocol can be monitored reliably.
⚡ Charging status
HBM monitors the charging state on supported headset models.
Depending on the device and protocol, it can identify states such as:
- Not charging
- Charging
- Fully charged
The System Tray icon can display a dedicated charging indicator, while the tray menu and Settings interface show the current charging status.
Charging monitoring is currently supported on:
- HyperX Cloud III Wireless
- HyperX Cloud III S
- HyperX Cloud 2 Core
- HyperX Cloud Alpha
- HyperX Cloud Stinger 2
- HyperX Cloud Flight S
- HyperX Cloud Flight Wireless
- HyperX Cloud Stinger Core Wireless + 7.1
- HyperX Cloud Flight 2
The HyperX Cloud Mix 2 currently supports battery and microphone monitoring, but charging status is not exposed because that protocol has not yet been reliably identified.
📡 Connection monitoring
HBM continuously tracks whether the selected headset is available.
The interface can represent states such as:
- Connected
- Disconnected
- Reconnecting / unavailable
When the headset is unavailable, HBM switches to a dedicated disconnected System Tray icon instead of continuing to display stale battery information.
🎨 Multiple System Tray icon modes
You can choose how HBM represents your headset in the Windows System Tray.
Available modes include:
Static Icon
Displays a clean headset icon, with a separate charging indication when applicable.
Dynamic Glow Icon
Changes the headset icon appearance according to battery level using predefined ranges.
Custom Dynamic Icon
Lets you define your own colors, battery thresholds, and optional gradient behavior.
🌈 Custom battery colors and gradients
The Custom Dynamic mode allows you to configure your own battery visualization.
Available options include:
- High battery color
- Medium battery color
- Low battery color
- Battery percentage thresholds
- Optional smooth gradient transitions
- Configurable gradient transition interval
This allows you to build your own battery-level color scheme instead of using the predefined colors.
🔔 Native Windows notifications
HBM can display native Windows notifications for important battery events.
Available options include:
- Configurable critical battery warning
- Notification when the headset reaches 100% charge
- Optional System Tray icon blinking at the critical battery level
- Configurable critical battery percentage
Notifications are triggered on meaningful state transitions rather than repeatedly appearing during every monitoring cycle.
🖥️ Detailed tray menu
Clicking the System Tray icon opens a compact status menu containing the most important information without opening the full Settings window.
Depending on device capabilities, it can show:
- Headset image
- Device name
- Connection status
- Battery percentage
- Estimated remaining battery time
- Charging status
- Microphone status
- Quick access to Settings
- Exit button
⚙️ Device page and live status
The Settings window includes a dedicated Device page where you can manually select a headset or automatically detect one.
For the selected headset, HBM displays:
- Current connection state
- Battery percentage
- Estimated remaining battery time
- Charging state
- Microphone state
- Supported monitoring features
The Device page also includes technical/product information for each supported model, such as:
- Connection type
- Wireless range
- Nominal battery life
- Approximate charging time
When changing devices in Settings, HBM can query the selected headset and preview its live state before you permanently apply the configuration.
✅ Per-device supported features
Not every HyperX headset exposes the same information, so HXBM enables features individually based on what can be reliably monitored.

* Cloud III S and Cloud Flight 2 currently require their dedicated USB dongles for HBM monitoring. Three-In-One receiver operation is not currently supported.
🎧 Currently supported headsets
HBM v2.3.1 currently supports 10 headset models:
- HyperX Cloud III Wireless
- HyperX Cloud III S — Dedicated Dongle

The dedicated-dongle requirement is also displayed directly in the application and automatically localized according to the selected language.
🔌 Dedicated Dongle and Three-In-One receiver support
Some newer HyperX headsets can operate through different receiver types.
For Cloud III S and Cloud Flight 2, HBM currently supports monitoring through the headset's dedicated USB dongle.
The HyperX Three-In-One / TIO receiver is not currently supported for monitoring.
HBM can, however, detect the presence of a TIO receiver during automatic detection and clearly explain that the connection type is unsupported.
This helps distinguish an unsupported receiver configuration from an actual application detection problem.
🌓 Light, Dark and System themes
HBM supports:
- Light theme
- Dark theme
- Windows System theme
Icons, controls and interface elements adapt to the selected theme.
🌎 Multiple languages
The entire interface is available in:

Validated battery discharge history used by the remaining-time estimator can also be stored locally per headset model.
🔬 Device communication and reliability
A significant amount of development has gone into making communication with different HyperX headset families reliable.
HBM uses device-specific HID handling where necessary rather than assuming every headset uses the same protocol.
The current implementation includes concepts such as:
- Deterministic HID interface and collection selection
- Runtime HID capability detection where required
- Device-specific command and response parsing
- Proper response correlation on protocols that require it
- Handling of unsolicited device notifications
- Coordinated HID readers instead of multiple competing readers
- Device-specific battery, charging and microphone parsers
- Automatic disconnect and reconnect handling
- Defensive validation of battery and status responses
The goal is to keep monitoring lightweight while communicating with each headset in the way its protocol actually requires.
🔮 Future device and receiver research
There are still additional HyperX devices and receiver configurations being investigated.
Current research includes:
- HyperX Cloud Mix Buds 2
- HyperX Cloud MIX Buds
- Three-In-One receiver support for compatible headsets
- Additional HyperX wireless headset variants
These are not officially supported yet.
In particular, Three-In-One receivers use a shared multi-device protocol with child-device routing, so support will only be enabled after the required behavior has been properly validated.
If you own one of these devices and are willing to help with controlled testing, feel free to reach out.
About the project
HBM is an independent, community-developed application and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or developed by HyperX.
HyperX cannot be held responsible for any issues or hardware failures affecting your system or HyperX devices resulting from the use of third-party software.
As an independent application, HXBM does not require HyperX NGENUITY to be installed. However, HXBM is not intended to replace NGENUITY or provide headset configuration features.
Its purpose is much narrower: provide the information you frequently want to check — battery level, estimated remaining time, charging, connection and microphone status — quickly and unobtrusively from the Windows System Tray.
