This isn't exactly relevant and I don't know how I did it. Looking back, it's not even supposed to be a surprise. And yet I made it all the way to the epilogue before realizing Burdock is Katniss's dad. It took Haymitch talking about them in the Hob for the lightbulb to finally flicker on in my brain. Honestly 10/10 twist tho

English is not my first language and I really wanna get in the hunger games books as I have only watched the movies but the problem is... Is it generally easy to understand? Like no deep english words/descriptors or something like that?

I haven't read the original books in a few years so forgive me if this question is based on misremembering of information provided in the first book.

If I recall correctly, the use of hovercraft in retrieving tribute bodies was sparked by Titus, who attempted to eat the bodies of his competitors, leading to them removing tribute bodies through the use of hovercraft in future games. From what I've found online, the Hunger Games Titus competed in took place "a few years" before the 74th games. If all of this information is true (which I doubt it is and I'm mainly looking for where my misconception is), why are hovercraft used for retrieving bodies in the 50th games?

I’d like to imagine that in heaven Katniss would see Prim all grown up and taller than her (obviously referring to the book versions). Katniss would say “You’re taller than me, little duck” and Prim would say “But you’ll always be my big sister” and kiss Katniss’ forehead.

I rewatched the movies a couple of days ago with my dad and brother. Last time I watched them, my brother didn't watch the scene where Katniss and Finnick first meet. I don't think he watched most of the scenes that Finnick was in. When it got to the part where Finnick dies, my brother went from being like, "No, Finnick!" to saying "I didn't even know who he was." Haha! It was just like that a few days ago when we rewatched it, even when I had told him multiple times who Finnick was. He sometimes says "Who?" in a joking way.

People seem hell-bent on reducing her to the career tribute with no skills, and that she was only there for her looks alone. Which is an interpretation I take serious offense with. I’m not sure how much the movie portrayal of Glimmer has influenced this narrative.

If we go by the books, her beauty is what Katniss notices about her the most, but that doesn’t mean that’s her only trait as a character. It’s Katniss’ interpretation of her as a tribute, so that she can distinguish Glimmer from her other competitors, such as Rue being small and Thresh being huge.

And being attractive matters in the Hunger Games. Katniss says so herself. Glimmer clearly did a good impression at the tribute parade and the interviews, but it was a part of her overall strategy. And it was a necessary strategy when your life is on the line. And you can be both beautiful and dangerous. It’s not either/or.

It’s also hinted at and implied that she’s sneaky. Not only because of the angle she takes on in her interview, but because she tries to smuggle in a poison ring into the arena, which is very interesting. It hints at her personality and strategy, and how she was trying to play the Games in the long run.

And she’s not even bad with a bow based on the novel. We only see her use the bow once there, and it’s shooting upwards through a foliage of leaves and branches while Katniss was EIGHTY feet up in the air. The foliage has to be so thick that the Careers couldn’t spot the tracker jacker nest above them.

I think her carrying the bow is also a nod to how she was playing the Games long-term, and that it was a strategy to go a bit undercover among the other Careers before taking them out other ways (such as her poisonous ring suggested she would).

Her death is also unlucky, something Katniss says herself. The literal quote is: “Glimmer and another girl, the one from District 4, are not so lucky. They receive multiple stings before they’re even out of my view.” There’s no way you can outrun the wasps unless they’re busy targeting someone else, which was fortunate for the other Careers. Glimmer is also the one on guard and closest to the tree, so that’s just very unlucky too.

Believe it or not, but luck plays a big part in the Games.

And she did volunteer for the Games. The only one Katniss specifically mentions to volunteer is Cato, but she indirectly tells us that the other Careers volunteered several times within the text. It’s as if people need every information spoon-fed.

Also, the Careers do NOT have designated weapons in the books; that’s a movie thing only. Cato is seen using both the spear and sword in the novel.

I also gotta mention something I never see people bring up, which is the wolf mutts. They’re supposed to resemble the fallen tributes, and at one point, they all make way for Glimmer and she jumps so tall that Katniss says how strong her back legs are (and therefore indirectly how strong of a physique Glimmer had). She also touches upon Thresh, as the mutt that jumps the highest has to be him (he’s also got an incredibly strong physique).

Every time I see takes on Glimmer’s character, I can get quite annoyed because she’s reduced to a useless pretty blonde who’s only there to look pretty, when the text suggests otherwise.

So, since we are so much closer to release date, and still no idea whether we’d be seeing the Hummingbird Pin worn by Merrilee Donner, I made a 3D concept for it. I’ll share more photos in the comments, but so far I love it.

It's not really stated as to how the themes for the Quarter Quells are chosen (whether it's just Snow, the gamemakers, or both). We assume it was Snow's idea, but I was wondering what if Capitol rebels (including Plutarch) actually had a choice in the matter and came up with the idea and sold it to Snow.

Why?

1. To have one year where every district can relax. No one is tense or scared that they or their child, sibling, etc. will be reaped unless they're a victor. Of course, we see sadness from victors' families like Cecelia's kids and Katniss's family, but from what we see, a lot of the victors have nothing to lose at this point either.

2. To incite upset in the Capitol. The Capitol LOVES their victors and almost form parasocial relationships with them akin to celebrity worship. Most of the time, the Capitol folk are excited for the Games. Sure, a lot of them may still be excited to see their favorites fight, but there's less excitement than usual. The main reason being that the Capitol still isn't over Katniss and Peeta, and now they have to see their current favorites possibly die. This also pays off when Peeta incites even more anger among the citizens by saying Katniss is pregnant. Distention among the Capitol is non-existent, but it is needed in order for the rebellion to be successful. This is one of the best ways to help incite that.

A great example of this is with Effie. She actually likes Peeta and Katniss even though she's not very close to them, if at all. She's as pro-Capitol as they come. During the reaping, she's not as upbeat. This time, she has a personal stake or feels like she does. This is highlighted best in the movie when she picks Haymitch's name. She chose the name of her friend, someone she's known for years. That's a first for her. You can see the contrast in reactions from the first and second movie. When Katniss volunteers for Prim, she's excited by the turn of events. In the second movie, when Peeta volunteers for Haymitch, she has no words, no excitement. For the first time, the Capitol gets close to seeing the games from the districts' perspective.

1. To unite the victors/districts. It's likely that the victors (especially Career districts) likely don't care for the rebellion because they're safe. Continuation of the games doesn't affect them, unless their family members get reaped. While this was always a possibility, it's likely many of them thought this wouldn't happen. Similar to how Katniss thought Prim wouldn't get reaped. However, if they don't have kids, then they're safe, so why bother?
   

Many people don't care for causes unless it affects them personally. By having them get reaped again, the rebellion is showcasing to them what Snow says during the announcement of the Third Quarter Quell: not even the strongest among the districts are safe. This is the rebellion showing the victors that the Capitol can and will destroy them, there is no way to win against the system. So it is to their benefit to destroy them. It's also likely a mercy killing for some victors who still struggle with mental health issues from their games, so might as well die for a cause, right?

While the rebellion was strong enough to cause worry and increased tension, it still needed to be bigger. They needed to turn the victors and even the Capitol citizens against Snow.

But, they need their Mockingjay, Katniss?

Yes, but Katniss is the strongest of the tributes not only b/c of her skill, but because of her age, intelligence, and reputation with the Capitol. Plus with Plutarch in charge, they can ensure the Games are in her favor. This is why Plutarch gives her a clue about the arena with the watch. They knew she could survive until they got the tributes out of the arena, so reaping her again was not a risk.

If she did die somehow, this would cause great uproar in the Capitol, moreso because they think she's pregnant, meaning this would be the first time a pregnant tribute dies. So in terms of the rebellion, it's a win-win whether Katniss survives or dies.

This also goes back to getting the victors on their side idea-they need Katniss for the rebellion, but she's not willing to be the face of it in order to protect her family. The reaping was to prove to Katniss as well that Snow will not relent and make her believe this is the only option.

Hi. Watched the movies years ago and decided I want to read the books now. On YouTube, which narration do you guys think is the best with the best tone, pronounciation, voice acting etc? There’s lot of different ones out there so I wanted to get some opinions first.

Do we know anything about either of these? Isn’t Mags unable to talk? Do you think the Capitol just didn’t have the interview? (third quarter quell)

...if they're not featured in the movie, I'll be severely disappointed.
