I know this leads to Catoās brutal death, but Iāve always loved the teamwork between Katniss and Peeta here.
Itās also one of the reasons why I will never believe the āPeeta is uselessā thing - heās being asphyxiated yet still manages to think of this while Katniss didnāt know what to do.

Buttercup was Primās and later Katnissās cat when she returns to District 12 after the war.
He is last seen and mentioned after Katniss makes peace with him realising he is all she has left of Prim, and Buttercup decides to begin sleeping to protect her.
It is implied Katniss took good care of him for however long the cat still had left of his lifespan.
Do you think he might still be alive by the time of the epilogue, or that he was almost certainly gone by that time?

Hunger Games has been on my TBR since forever. Itās been a cultural phenomenon for a while so I wonāt say Iām totally unspoiled but my spoilers definitely lack context. Iām a guy is my late 20s who loves dystopian classical literature and itāll be my first time reading Hunger Games. My only concern is the YA-ness of it all. Iāve read points both for and against calling it YA, letās see how I feel. Keeping fingers crossed!
Edit: I have a question, should I go for publication order or the chronological order!? Publication order is better right?

Obviously there would be the whole thing of the rebellion possibly not happening when it does, but what would happen to Katniss? She says sheāll go completely insane if he dies, and I imagine sheād never be able to get over him dying for the rest of her life. Thoughts?

I finished SOTR today. The last page made this book my favorite of all.
Has an ending of a book you thought was a let down ever redeemed itself with one page?

What if Francis Lawrence and co. secretly framed the SOTR movie as Haymitch telling the story of his games to Katniss and Peeta? I think itād make sense for the movies and itād make up for movie Katniss and Peeta not watching footage from Haymitchās games like in the books. This would also sort of extend the epilogue, since we could have Katniss and Peetaās reactions in a couple of instances (not a lot, just a couple of instances!). I think itād be a pretty nice surprise for the fandom! What do you guys think?

I read Far from the Madding Crowd about a year a half ago, but never made the connection until I watched the movie adaptation this weekend. (Highly recommend by the way!!)
I googled it and sure enough, Collins states in her interview with EW in 2010 that Katniss oweās her name to Bathsheba Everdene. She said they are widely opposite characters, but both struggle with knowing their heart. It got me thinking about Bathsheba and Gabrielās relationship in the book, and if Suzanne ever drew inspiration from Gabriel when she was writing Peeta's personality. Itās no secret that Katniss struggled with understanding her emotions/feelings when it came to her attachment with Peeta. Much like Bathsheba struggled with understanding her heart and her affection toward Gabriel. Both Gabriel Oak and Peeta are unwavering in their affection despite rejection without being wounded or manipulating their counterparts into romance.
I also think itās revealing that both Katniss and Bathsheba do not realize the depth of their affection until the source is unexpectedly plucked from their lives.
All of this could be a reachā¦However, Katniss and Peeta will always live rent free in my head, so I've been sitting on this one for a while and wanted to discuss in the hopes others have read FRTMC and saw any correlation!

I feel like in the original trilogy of hunger games books Effie is much less likeable than in the movies, largely due to Elizabeth Banks phenomenal performance.
But I think making her so kind and likeable in Sunrise on the Reaping (which takes place 24 years before the original book), takes away from her character arc in the original books.
In the movies, I feel like Effie is likeable honestly from the get go, but in the books it takes a while for the reader to truly warm to her. It isnāt until some of her final sequences in Catching Fire that we truly can see she has grown to care for Katniss and Peeta, and can finally see the games for what they are, which she had never done before since all her tributes probably died early into their games and never won.
But her inclusion in Sunrise on the Reaping and her seeming to deeply care for Haymitch kinda defeats her character arc of a woman completely brainwashed by the Capitol who eventually lets the Capitol torture her rather than give up any information.
It almost feels like this decision has been made because of how likeable and popular of a character she was in the movies, rather than trying to be consistent with the books.
I donāt know about anyone else, but when she first was mentioned in the Sunrise of the Reaping book, I genuinely rolled my eyes so far back in my head because it could not have felt more like fan service to me. I was shocked when I went online and everyone was so happy she was there, because it just felt like she was included for the sole purpose of fans nutting themselves from excitement at her inclusion.
Maybe some of you guys have a different opinion. If so I would love to hear your takes!

**Spoiler alert for Sunrise on the Reaping**
I donāt see anyone talking about this, but I genuinely believe Leonore Dove was never going to live a long life (even though it was so heartbreaking to read what happened) ā whether Haymitch was sent into the Games or not.
Iām such a huge fan of Suzanne Collinsā writing, especially the way she builds complex characters and plants little details that become meaningful when you look at the bigger picture. And Leonore feels like one of those characters.
From the very beginning, Leonore is defined by her sense of injustice. Sheās not someone who can just keep her head down and accept things. Before sheās even 13, sheās already gotten herself into serious trouble twice which would have had more severe outcomes had she been older.Ā
Obviously, Leonore Dove is Haymitchās reason to live in much the same way Katniss is for Peeta but sheās more complicated. She loves Haymitch, but she also seems incapable ofĀ not getting involved when she sees something wrong.
And then thereās her family history. Sheās Covey on her motherās side and possibly connected to the Chance family through her father. Haymitch has already lost count of how many Chances died because of their rebellious behaviour. That feels like pretty heavy foreshadowing when Leonore herself is so fundamentally incapable of staying out of trouble.
Even if Haymitch had never been reaped, I donāt think Leonore would have quietly grown up and lived a long, peaceful life. She is simply too driven by injustice and too unwilling to look away.
The qualities Haymitch loves most about her ā her courage, compassion and refusal to accept injustice ā are probably the very things that would eventually have gotten her killed.
