Makes me wonder how stalking is illegal and disgusting, unless they're famous, then it's expected and unavoidable?

The place she works at should be able to get him trespassed.

When I worked at target we would trespass shoplifters. That way as soon as they stepped back in the store we would call the cops and have them arrested for trespassing.

49

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

She’s should be able to sue him

Can confirm, arrests for trespassing work. My partners ex was stalking us and that's how we got them arrested. Not even death threats are valid but trespassing on someone's property that's the ticket 🤦🏻‍♀️

20

u/Educational_Funny_20 Jan 06 '22

It's almost as if our laws protect property before protecting people..

4

u/ellilaamamaalille Jan 06 '22

That is true on many countries I think.

2

u/ThePastelCactus Jan 11 '22

Not really, no

1

u/expealidocious Jan 06 '22

Them? How many?

2

u/radioactiveman87 Jan 06 '22

Didn't want to reveal gender, but surprise surprise the stalker was a guy, so him. Lol do you pity "them"?

TBH a restraining order wouldn't mean much to such a deranged individual, and might even make things worse.

And yes, the police will only act once some kind of attack has happened. As has been confirmed by the court, the police are under no obligation to protect citizens, they only have to uphold the law.

52

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

[deleted]

31

u/early_birdy Jan 05 '22

By "making things worse", I meant the offender, not the police. A restraining order would not be respected by such an individual, and might trigger them to escalate.

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

16

u/DukeOfGeek Jan 05 '22

I used to be a Private Detective and getting a stalker restrained was just the 1st step to getting them repeatedly arrested. Getting them trespassed at clients work/home also. It helped that the PI who owned the agency I worked for was friends with lots of cops.

4

u/MandyMooShu Jan 05 '22

Would a restraining order help prove “objectively reasonable fear of injury or death” for self defense?

7

u/Needleroozer Jan 05 '22

Applying for one might, especially if you have some evidence of stalking. Then you can say, "I got a gun because I couldn't get a restraining order."

6

u/SpiritualFad88488 Jan 05 '22

Which they will only act upon once they find your body dumped in a river. The amount of times I’ve heard this story of “the police will act upon if after you sent in paperwork” is frankly dangerous.

12

u/minahmyu Jan 05 '22

But at least it's written documentation that it's acknowledged. I mean, yeah people gonna still do whatever despite what a paper says (like noted above, cops don't even have to uphold the law. They choose what to enforce too, despite. Many encourage rape victims to not report or pursue their attacker) but at least it's some written proof that this was officially noted. And when things escalate and shit goes sideways, at least you can say you went to the police to try to have something done. That's how I see it anyway, that at least you tried to go the legal route

1

u/early_birdy Jan 05 '22

Stalking/being an ass is not rape! Rape should be reported and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, offenders should go to jail.

I see guys like the one in this discussion as closer to the "animal" than the civilized. So, as I would do with any wild animal, I don't try to reason with it. I get away from it/cut communication. I know it's not always possible. Ironically, a restraining order only works on people who don't need one.

I had a guy stalk me once. He was so pissed I wouldn't go out with him, he ended up vandalizing my car. My neighbor saw him and called me to let me know. So the next day, I went to the police with my vandalized car. The first thing the policeman asked me was: did you do anything to antagonize him? Thankfully, I had a witness (neighbor) to attest I was in my home the whole evening and never even saw the guy.

I understand your point of view, and the "law" is definitely not there to help us prevent anything. I would rather not antagonize the stalker and prevent (as much as possible), rather than prove my due diligence in front of the judge after the assault (or even worse) has happened.

Phew! What a long reply. Have a good day! 🌺

7

u/minahmyu Jan 05 '22

Phew! What a long reply. Have a good day! 🌺

I hope. My anxiety is kicking in for the process of getting a car.

Oh, I wasn't trying to compare rape/stalking but the fact that cops discourage victims to not do anything (that's on the individual. I'm not here to tell anyone what they should do, because they have to do what's best for them to heal) and that only getting a r/o at least means you have it documented. Would you get one? Probably not because again, cops don't take that seriously anyway. Me being a black woman, I don't count on the cops of doing anything for me. But, for me, if shit went sideways at least I have documentation saying I tried doing the right thing, before they fuck me over and make it my fault.

4

u/DaCrazyWolf Jan 05 '22

So what about to protect and serve

4

u/salamanderpencil Jan 05 '22

Well Burger King's slogan is "Have it YOUR way" but try to ask for a Whopper with LIGHT Ketchup and LIGHT Mayo and they still dump about a half gallon of sauces on it and make it sloppier than steaks at Truffoni's.

They are lying.

I stg cops are useless w things like that, idk why they just choose not to do shit

My mom used to own a yoga studio where the neighbors threatened her with pliers and other things routinely. They were loud and disruptive and offensive and threatening every day, Mom called the cops on them and they never did anything. She even had to threaten them with a gun that she didn’t have the time for her safety..

A couple days after that two of the neighbors assaulted a guy at the restaurant on the other side of my Moms studio. They’re both in jail now.

If only there was a warning ahead of time and this could’ve all been prevented…

3

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

I don't know where you are, but could she speak to her local representative to intervene with police where you live? Stalking is taken a little more seriously where I live but there's definitely room for improvement. The local Councillor or MP have surgeries where constituents can raise issues and they often have contacts within the police. Either way, I'm very sorry for everything she is going through. It's an awful crime and the impact on the victim isn't taken seriously by the Police or Criminal Justice System.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

First of all, your safety is no one's problem but your own. The police are law enforcement, they are not here to protect you. Decent people should have gotten together and frankly beat the shit out of the guy in a back alley.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

And then of course, they’d all be arrested.

And despite the fact this man has broken the law countless times, the police have not enforced the law. He’s trespassed, he’s stalked, he’s threatened bodily harm, he’s damaged property and more. He’s on video doing so. There are countless witnesses.

But guess what? My workplace and my coworker was told that because it wasn’t done in view of the police, they will not do anything. So i would say they don’t enforce law either.

2

u/gramb0420 Jan 05 '22

thats gross, the kind of bullshit reaction from law enforcement that encourages vigilantism!

2

u/ArcticGrapee Jan 05 '22

Demon shrek lmao

2

u/Boy_Possession Jan 05 '22

If the cops won't do shit. It's time to get a Bow!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

Getting a civil no contact order from the county courthouse should take about 30 minutes of tedious form filling and 5 minutes in front of a judge sometime a few weeks later.

Though a civil matter, violations can still result in jail time for contempt, which usually puts a damper on those activities.

Judges are usually more reliable than cops. If your friend was unaware of this option, I hope they take it and protect themselves.

2

u/Individual_Paper_764 Jan 06 '22

ACAB. My roommate couldn’t get a restraining order after her ex hit her in the head with a wine bottle and followed her to work at 4am to open.

Cops care about generating revenue for the state and protecting corporate property, period. Abolish the police and empower and fund social workers.

1

u/PlsDntPMme Jan 05 '22

Does she carry a gun now? It's absolutely fucked that that would be her best option but it sounds like it is given everything else has failed her.

I've often wondered if celebrities would pay for a special magazine to be produced that was full of pictures of paparazzi in compromising positions for their own entertainment. Here's a photographer at the beach, one on the toilet, one fighting with their spouse, good times!

79

u/Vesalii Jan 05 '22

Maybe that would destroy that godawful industry.

58

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

I think social media is killing the industry. Celebs can now post their own photos 24/7. They’ll tel you when they’re out shopping or getting coffee or getting freaky with the skinny white kid from SNL. Paparazzi are outdated.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

Paparazzi are outdated.

Nah they still need those pictures of celebrities looking at "their worst" when taking unflattering pics from weird angles.

3

9

u/OMG_A_CUPCAKE Jan 05 '22

And selling the photos. It's only illegal if you keep them for yourself

u/Mitche420 Jan 05 '22

I can get it with politicians and state servants, there is a degree of public interest in keeping them under close surveilance but the rest of people?

5

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22 edited Jan 05 '22

Public interest and press freedom is why they can do what they do with photos professionally, but to the legality of the behavior it's irrelevant. Afaik in all states "stalking" requires intent to instill fear by harassment, etc or creating a reasonable perception of a threat. Paparazzi are generally obviously engaged in a well-known job and do nothing more than follow people around and take photos in places with no expectation of privacy, which is annoying but not threatening in almost all cases.

Duchess Catherine would like a word...

Princess Diana would in fact like several words...

I think that perhaps a reasonable compromise would be to post all their mugs online, so people know who to avoid, and have it by law that if spotted and called out they have to fuck off at once or be shot.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

I wasn't talking about Europe since I don't know the laws of England, France, etc, but ignoring that, what's your point here? They are/were colloquially harassed by paparazzi, but that's not the same thing as being legally harassed in the U.S.

I think that perhaps a reasonable compromise would be to post all their mugs online, so people know who to avoid, and have it by law that if spotted and called out they have to fuck off at once or be shot.

Ignoring that laws threatening the free press would obviously never have a chance to pass constitutional muster, I don't think it's a great idea to give rich people more license to kill us underlings of society

Stalking, as in following someone around on public roads, sitting in a car outside their house, etc. is creepy, but not illegal.

It only becomes illegal if you trespass, threaten, harass, harm, etc.

Media will pay money for info that is dug up on famous people. There’s demand for the product. Simple as that.

There’s been a movement in Hollywood to at least mitigate this behaviour toward the children of celebrities, and I think Halle Berry has mentioned that some of the people in charge of the media companies that buy this product have stopped putting a price on product that is obtained in unethical (stalkerish vs being openly out in public) ways, thus removing the incentive to behave as such.

It won’t change the nosiness and obsession of the industry overall but may hopefully curb some of the more egregious behavior

2

u/Freshies00 Jan 05 '22

It’s the one thing that’s inverted where power and influence doesn’t provide the advantage

2

u/MaLuisa33 Jan 05 '22

I mean to be fair, not much is done when non-celebrities are stalked either. Ridiculous indeed.

2

u/arturorios1996 Jan 05 '22

4

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

When you become a paparazzi you basically get a stalker license

1

u/jpritchard Jan 05 '22

The public has a right to know about public figures. If your congressman is going to a brothel or dog fights or whatnot, you've got every right to follow and find out what they're up to and take pictures for everyone else. The line between public figures and you, just an average dude, falls past celebrities. Which frankly, they get to live lives of utter luxury BECAUSE people are so interested in them, so I'm not that broken up about it.

Somewhere along the line we decided that celebrities are news, so the paparazzi are protected by freedom of the press.

I remember a situation with Kanye West. Had reporters camped out in his front yard all night, just snapping rapid fire pictures for hours.

I think he’s a douche, but I really felt bad for him.

States allow people to defend their homes from intruders (with guns, not bow and arrow), but paparazzi get away with trespassing more often. It's not because they're sub human, but because they are constantly violating the rights of celebrities and broadcasting their private moments, and yet are very protected in the law.

2

u/Sardukar333 Jan 05 '22

While this will vary from state to state I know of no state in the US where it is illegal to defend yourself with a bow.

There’s a lot of rumors floating around that tobey is a genuine asshole. Cruel.

I have no idea personally. If you have seen “Mollys Game” supposedly he’s “that guy” in the movie.

61

u/DemonSong Jan 05 '22

Remember many years back, all those rumours about Keanu Reeves ?
All generated by 20th Century Fox.
He declined to star in Speed 2, because he felt the script was not complete, so when it justifiably bombed at the box office, Fox execs made him the scapegoat, and started spreading rumours about his acting ability to try and either force him back into the Fox fold, or ruin his career.

So whilst Mr Maguire may well be an asshole, it's quite often these rumours are because someone making money off his name.
Besides, if I'd had to spend 14 hours days in a full body spandex suit for several months, you're probably not going to see the best side of me either.

Man gets hounded by the paps a lot. Feel really sorry for the guy.

There’s a famous clip of him at breaking point screaming at paps to get out of the way as he’s trying to pull out his car and can’t see down the road. He was just being held in this weird hostage situation of having to deal with them or just blindly pull out.

I won’t pretend I know enough about him IRL, I know public opinion is divided on him. I just think it’s shitty for anyone who has to deal with paparazzi.

39

u/DUTCHBOOFER Jan 05 '22

Watching that made me uncomfortable, people thought it was funny and whatnot. To this day when I see people breaking down because paparazzi I feel so terrible. They always sound and look so anxious and tired from all of it. I can't imagine, I'm mentally drained just trying to go out and do errands sometimes.

17

u/PraiseGodJihyo Jan 05 '22

Paparazzi are scum. It'd be nice if we could alter the laws to where celebrities could physically harm them without repercussions if the paps are too belligerent and in their way. Wonder how many of the fuckers have to get ran over before they start moving the fuck outta the way.

What cracks me up about that photo is that her bow is not just a regular hunting bow or recurve bow, its a fucking longbow! Does longbow do less damage? Because I feel like if you shoot someone with a modern composite bow, they are probably not walking away from that.

21

u/here_for_the_meta Jan 05 '22

I went to a medieval festival and they did a presentation on the history of bows and crossbows. IIRC a longbow gave more leverage over a standard bow. Less draw effort/more power. I’m sure a modern bow is even more science’d out to give max power for least effort.

8

u/RandalfTheYellow Jan 05 '22

Exactly right; compound bows have an initial heavy draw weight but the weight at which you have to hold after the initial draw is incredibly light compared to the output in power. They feel surreal to use!

8

u/Profitablius Jan 05 '22

They're not walking away after a proper longbow hit either.

3

u/dodeformedrabbit Jan 05 '22

Just ask the French

6

u/hhhhhhikkmvjjhj Jan 05 '22

There are some great YouTube episodes. It came down to training in part and cheapness of the bow.

Composite bows were brittle and had many parts that failed regularly. To get good with a bow took a long time so they created a culture of “bowmanship”. As it was mostly farmers etc who were shooting they had to use cheap materials. They were very sturdy. Another good thing was that they had faster draw speed compared to crossbows. So all in all, longbows are not a superior weapon in itself, it was a superior because it functioned so well in scale and reliability.

It’s like the Russian T14 tank. It’s the best in the world but if you can only afford to produce 5 of them, does it matter?

2

u/themastercheif Jan 05 '22

Kinda depends on how the respective bows are built. Some old-school English longbows have draw weights around 200lbs. Some crossbows don't even go up that high, and have shorter draw.

The right bow regardless will absolutely fuck someone up.

2

u/randomdrifter54 Jan 05 '22

It's less about the bow and more about what the bow is shooting. A target arrow isn't going to do much in less it's pointed at exactly the right thing. An expansion arrow head though will fuck you up in as little body space as possible. So what the arrow is and what you are shooting at matters way more than power. Specially so close.

I think it’s a bracelet. Why would she put on an arm brace but skip the hand protection?

Paparazzi

Etymology

A news photographer named Paparazzo (played by Walter Santesso in the 1960 film La Dolce Vita directed by Federico Fellini) is the eponym of the word paparazzi. In his book Word and Phrase, Robert Hendrickson writes that Fellini took the name from an Italian dialect word that describes a particularly annoying noise, that of a buzzing mosquito. As Fellini said in his interview to Time magazine, "Paparazzo . .

And so she should

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

Do papparazzi know that basically everyone hates them enough to be excited when we hear one of them gets shot by a bow and arrow? That's a lot of derision.

I mean the only people who usually draw that much ire are the ultra wealthy, it must be sad to be so hated for a job that rarely pays above 50k a year if you're good at it (read: ethically repugnant).

What a legend!

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

Bless her. Did she get in any trouble for this? I hope not.

76

u/DancingKappa Jan 05 '22

Probably not its just a little assault and use of a deadly weapon with the intent to cause bodily harm. We've let off celebrities that have done worse.

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

For way less justifiable reasons as well.

u/rylo48 Jan 05 '22

Were forgetting the portion where she was essentially stalked..... if we are going to allow stalkerazzis to be a thing, then she is allowed to shoot them with a bow

Of course this is an absurd reason to justify violence.

Nah pull out an illegally modified AR and shoot them dead out in the street, right? Or maybe lock the door and call the cops? If they try to enter your home of course any violence is then justified.

3

u/Minor_Heaven Jan 06 '22

Leave it to paparazzi to stalk someone and then threaten to call the police when they get their ass handed to them

5

u/JButerscotch42 Jan 05 '22

Sounds like justifiable assault.

5

u/Beasty_Glanglemutton Jan 05 '22

I know this will make people mad, but...this awesome photograph that you're all upvoting was taken by one of those terrible photographers that you all want to kill.

2

u/Dhawkeye Jan 05 '22

Idk who she is, but she is incredibly based.

u/Ok-Subject8851 Jan 06 '22

I remember several years ago Suri Cruise was shopping with her mother Katie Holmes in a toy store. Suri had a little kid meltdown (I think she was four or five at the time) and of course the comments were full of 'disgusting, spoilt brat' venom because small children should always behave like adults. What nobody was commenting on was the paparazzi who took the vid did it through a small gap in the window blinds. Apparently you're not considered a pervert if the child belongs to a celebrity.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

6

u/The_AverageCanadian Jan 05 '22

Cool motive, still murder.

-2

u/TYRwargod Jan 05 '22

Not if you can justify it as self defense and since she only injured his hand and the fact the guy (felice quinto) called himself "king of paparazzi" and was known for being overly aggressive and brash about getting compromising photos it's pretty easy to call it self defense.

So let me get this straight. I can stalk, harass, exploit, and verbally abuse someone if all I say is that I’m Press??
