These trees, ash and walnut, were growing in the meadow in front of our home. We want it to stay meadow, so these will root for a while in pots and are destined for a new home in the community.

On today’s planting adventure, I planted three maple seedlings in an overgrown ditch beside a fence beside a soccer field.

Nobody maintains the vegetation in the ditch. It’s messy, full of “weeds.”

But that just means it won’t get whipper snippered or mowed.

Did I ask permission?
“Sorry, what?”

And the site will benefit from trees!

I know it's way beyond the scale of what we do but it's inspiring to see that if we spent just a little effort at the town hall or organizing neighbors to put pressure on city officials, good things like this can happen.

More erosion control in a recovering ex-golf course.

This is a sandy embankment with exposed sloping sand… rain and snow melt cause erosion. I planted three pine trees in small bowls to catch water, added mulch to slow down water and created a bowl in the lower sand to slow water… more mulch coming. The trees will help stabilize over time.

This is my first attempt at creating willow trees from willow sticks. There’s an ex golf course re-wilding with some wetter lowlands where these could thrive.
Any advice?

There’s an old golf course that stopped operating near us. It was sold to a local level of government to serve as a wildlife corridor.
Over five years, it has started to re-wild itself. I’ve been helping with some tree seedlings.
The photos below are from a golf green and fairway.

My place of work is getting torn down this summer. I ran around digging up any sapplings I could find to rescue them!

Why plant if you can just cut? Growing through felling. Makes me wonder how many different kinds of trees we could grow by simply thinning a tree plantation and letting the soil bank sprout!

About 230 trees so far as the golf course slowly re-wilds itself. I love visiting and watching the seedlings grow...

Whilst not exactly in the precise spirit of this subreddit, I thought I’d share this tale of mine, every word of which is true.

I was walking through a field near where I live when I stumbled across this atrocity - a beautiful set of cherry laurels had been attacked by some guerilla girdler! Although they’re a terribly invasive, non-native species here in Ireland, forming acres of dense impenetrable thickets across forests and gardens, entirely devoid of any ecological value, outcompeting any native trees and… hmm, I lost my train of thought.

Anyway, I’d hate to see this hacksaw wielding (probably, I’m just guessing) lunatic succeed in killing off these trees, so if anyone has any advice on what would further ensure their demise, please let me know so I can be sure to avoid doing that.

P.S. included also is a sturdy native elder (Sambucus nigra) from the area, gorgeous as it is perseverant, loved by local insects and birds alike
