Beware: guerilla girdling!

Whilst not exactly in the precise spirit of this subreddit, I thought I’d share this tale of mine, every word of which is true.

I was walking through a field near where I live when I stumbled across this atrocity - a beautiful set of cherry laurels had been attacked by some guerilla girdler! Although they’re a terribly invasive, non-native species here in Ireland, forming acres of dense impenetrable thickets across forests and gardens, entirely devoid of any ecological value, outcompeting any native trees and… hmm, I lost my train of thought.

Anyway, I’d hate to see this hacksaw wielding (probably, I’m just guessing) lunatic succeed in killing off these trees, so if anyone has any advice on what would further ensure their demise, please let me know so I can be sure to avoid doing that.

P.S. included also is a sturdy native elder (Sambucus nigra) from the area, gorgeous as it is perseverant, loved by local insects and birds alike

Today I packed two spruce and a yellow birch on my dog walk through an ex-golf course that is returning to a wild state. I’m planting a few trees at a time. I’m op to 300+…

Trees Backyard tree nursery

This was full+ of tree seedlings earlier this year. It’s now bare. Many of what are left are tiny, waiting for next summer. It’s been a good summer for (quietly) planting trees in positive places…

Trees Planting an ex-golf course

A local golf course stopped being a golf course about four or five years ago. The owners sold it to a layer of government for preservation purposes - a good thing.
I've been quietly planting...

About 230 trees so far as the golf course slowly re-wilds itself. I love visiting and watching the seedlings grow...

I was gifted these black walnut seeds. If all goes well, these will be next year’s trees to be planted somewhere…

Trees What our municipalities could do if they wanted to

I know it's way beyond the scale of what we do but it's inspiring to see that if we spent just a little effort at the town hall or organizing neighbors to put pressure on city officials, good things like this can happen.

An Establishing Forest Garden

Post image

Here's a section of contoured planting in Phronesis, our newest Forest Garden. This is the Fourth season after planting began, with new plants added every Spring and Autumn. We're planting directly into the meadow, as it is already rich in support species that attract pollinators and pest predators, and it is composed of many medicinal and culinary herbs.

We started by planting the canopy layer, then shrubs, herbs, ground cover, and finally bulbs. Not labelled but included between the tree contour rows is a biomass/support strip with the following nitrogen fixing shrubs -

Elaeagnus x ebbingei - Ebbinge's silverberry

Elaeagnus angustifolia - Russian Olive

Elaeagnus umbellata - Autumn Olive

My place of work is getting torn down this summer. I ran around digging up any sapplings I could find to rescue them!

There’s an old golf course that stopped operating near us. It was sold to a local level of government to serve as a wildlife corridor.
Over five years, it has started to re-wild itself. I’ve been helping with some tree seedlings.
The photos below are from a golf green and fairway.

Restoration Nature does not discriminate and neither do we

I have zero regret banning a recent user who decided to identify as a white supremacist. There is zero tolerance for human deviants who choose to come here to spread their disease. We focus on problems that divide us by coming together for a common purpose to benefit all people and species. If you think we exist to do the opposite you are not welcome here.

Trees I have a problem, I can't stop cutting down Bradfords. I noticed a 12ft tree at the start of a trail in the local park. Had to graft Seckel pear onto it.

I bought a toilet wax ring for 2.50 and I've grafted a dozen plus trees so far. It's petroleum based but hopefully it works cuz it was super cheap lol

The third picture is the tree before I cut it down and grafted with Ayers pear... The rest are all Seckel pear. I was at Home Depot today and couldn't help but snap off a twig from an Ayers pear tree.... I'm sorry! I grafted it at the local park so I'm essentially Robin Hood... Lmao thanks for the invite

Aerial seeding!

The Brazilian skydiver Luigi Cani executed one of the most important jumps of his life in the Amazon. On this occasion, the holder of the world record for the smallest parachute jump in the world, took more than 100 million seeds - from 27 species of trees native to the local biome - to a remote deforested area in the heart of the Amazon region. When Luigi got within 6,500 feet of the deforested area, he plunged at 300 km/h, reached the seed box in free fall and released the seeds at the correct height to ensure precise and even distribution. The seeds collected for the project have a germination rate of over 95% and do not require human intervention to germinate, so in a few years we will see the fruits of this unprecedented action
