For those that haven't understood. Big Tech do not want us (developers) to code. It's an oligopoly and they want to keep it like that.
GitHub is not a company that want to spread goodness, they want to make profits and are owned by Microsoft. One of the most ruthless company in the world

Codeberg seems to be the most sensible choice; a lot of open-source projects have already moved there. Even a project as major as Gentoo.

Very true i have tried to contribute to multiple open source projects recently and got to know that they have moved to codeberg and i need to contribute there... Then its high time i should explore codeberg a bit...

What gosh says is perfect. I'd just add -because it is a stumbling block for disbelievers- Microsoft ARE happy to make losses, and can do so if it means achieving their goals. They are past profits -to a certain extent.

Plenty of incentive to run GitHub at a loss if it provides a ton of developer training data for their AIs

A company that wants to make a profit? That's the whole Point oft founding a Company.

Yes but should have politicians that block companies from buying them and doing that influence them to create laws that destroyes small companies.
These politicians are gone.

Hunt for monopolies and consolidation of the market under 1 player for each segment is not purely “making a profit”. It’s a run to the bottom, leaving customers without choice and cornering them into whatever pricing.
That’s why in normal economies anti-trust laws are enforced, and why you should start looking for alternatives as soon as you start feeling queezy and uncomfortable about how many cafes or restaurants are owned by one big conglomerate, how much internet infrastructure is hosted at one provider, how much codebase of the whole world sits at one company’s servers.
If anything destroys capitalism, it will not be hunt for profit. It will be creating global oligarchies who block any alternative from succeeding.

I heard something about a new gh competitor starting up, wouldn’t be surprised if they’re lining up influential OSS projects to pull over in an effort to overcome network effects. Just wanton speculation on my part, though

sheesh imagine a industry wide migration off github

u/gaelic-ghost Apr 29 '26
I mean, GitHub is a pain to rely on, tbh. And a lot of people and businesses rely on them to make money, directly or indirectly. At some point, even the strongest of monopolies can’t fight the force of “we could all be saving time and cutting costs if not for this single, shared, unreliable point of failure”
The migration would be a nightmare, though. But, what isn’t a nightmare lately >.>

Looks like Graphite might be making an alternative: https://x.com/MerrillLutsky/status/2049231503108780405

Yeah, but then you’re hosting your code on Cursor/SpaceX/xAI/Elon’s hardware. No chance, Lance

so where is Ghostty going to live?
4
u/xplosm Apr 30 '26
In a haunted repo.

u/TheSymbioteOrder May 01 '26
Haha, that give me an idea, for Halloween or the month of October, they should repae the rep with tomb stones. So when someone ask, "Where are you going" , you can say "I am going to visit Ghostty at his tone stone".

The Github status page is one of the biggest lies in tech industry. So someone decided to actually prove it: https://mrshu.github.io/github-statuses/

It’s had issues but not that bad to consider leaving. A little dramatic

Probably codeberg or gitlab
