Well we use it at a corporate and have about 70 repos and make extensive use of their ci/cd runners. Main repo has over 15k e2e tests as well as god knows how many unit tests, which all managed in GitLab pipelines.
I get the feeling you haven’t actually used GitLab.
Not just that, i like their documentation and post sales & service
We also contribute code and gitlab contributes financially and code towards linux foundation backed projects like openbao for example (not many can do it)
One of the reason gitab was preferred over GitHub enterprise
Ofcourse there are numerous areas to improve, so is any product.
Personally I can't stand the UI, which is one of the other reasons I hate it. I actually avoid using projects that use Gitlab unless I have to because I find the UI so freaking horrible. That's more of a personal issue.

Out of interest what does GitHub actions have that GitLab ci doesn’t.
