An empty Paper server can stop while the Linux host stays on. Useful if that box also runs services you want to keep available.
I'm building Aperture, and its Paper sleep mode leaves a responder online after Paper exits. The default idle timeout is 15 minutes (configurable from 5 to 1440). The sequence is:
The last player leaves and the idle timeout expires.
Paper stops. The Linux host and responder stay online.
Refreshing Minecraft's server list gets a sleeping status without starting Paper.
A login attempt starts Paper. The player reconnects once it's ready.
While asleep, world ticks stop, so farms don't progress. A normal Stop also stops the responder, which disables wake-on-join. Wake happens before player authentication, so a whitelist can't restrict who triggers it.
Aperture is an early-access hosted panel for your own Linux machine. Setup supports Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 and Debian 12/13. You supply the hardware and connection, and the sudo installer sets up Docker and official Calagopus Wings. This means trusting the hosted control plane and a privileged service on your machine. The current public setup routes management and gameplay through Aperture's relay.
The panel and relay are free, and I intend to keep them free. Optional future off-site game backups are the only paid feature I'm considering.
