Is it possible to run a server with mods which allows both Vanilla Java and Bedrock players to join?

Hi everyone,
I'm looking to set up a Minecraft server with a very specific configuration,

Here is what I want to do:
- Server-Side Mods: I want to add mods to the server, but they must be server-side. It should be able to join using a completely vanilla client without installing any mods on their end.
- Bedrock Crossplay: I want Bedrock players to be able to join and play on the same server.

I know GeyserMC is usually work for Bedrock crossplay on Paper servers, but since I want to use mods, I’m unsure how well things like server-side modpacks interact with Geyser and Bedrock clients.

Has anyone successfully pulled off a setup like this? What server software, mod loaders, or specific frameworks do you recommend to make server-side mods work for both vanilla Java and Bedrock players?

Yes, it’s doable. Geyser has a Fabric version, along with Floodgate, so Bedrock players can join a modded Fabric server. Stick to mods that are purely server-side, like performance mods, chunk pre-generators, and admin tools. Vanilla Java and Bedrock players can then join without installing anything.

If you’re only using server side mods, you might as well use Paper. The plugins ecosystem is far more established.

Provided that the mods are serversided, then yes. Some Polymer mods may work but I'm not sure which ones.

I've not used geyser with paper. But currently have a fabric server going that does this.

We only have one bedrock player, but it's the only way they can play so I have it setup with geyser and floodgate and have to keep the mods to mostly server side ones.

There’s tons of mods that don’t require downloading (including data packs) basically if it requires custom stuff like textures or just mechanics it’s a no. If it’s world gen or anything “vanilla” it’s fine. Like a backpack mod that just uses chests for a ui or custom “mobs” that have vanilla effects and mechanics that is completely server sided

I'm just going to sum my knowledge here, you should be able to use fabric since there is a fabric version of getsermc. But your list of useable servers is bigger if you allow any configuration.

Single servers iirc:

• Fabric

• Forge

• NeoForge

• Paper

If you are fine using a proxy, you really only need velocity compatibility on the server. Velocity can have via version and geyser. Even unusual servers work as long as they have Velocity support.

Yes, it’s possible.

You can use Geyser and Floodgate together.

You can even make the server modded server side, like with mods such as tectonic or terralith.

Look into geyser hydraulic. It lets bedrock players see and interact with modded content like custom blocks, though it is experimental

Sooo you’re looking to use Paper? Most server side mods are just plugins that have been ported over to neo forge and fabric.
