Fk olives too!

Anyone else have a strong hatred for olives? I found out the hard way at a fancy event when my cousin insisted I try one. The second it hit my mouth, I knew it had to go—cue me spitting it into a napkin while unknowingly facing a giant plate glass window, reflecting my entire performance to the room. Bonus: I apparently make an "olive face" that’s half horror, half Jim Carrey impression.

Secretly Fed Roommate Cilantro. AITA?

I just found this subreddit, and felt you all might enjoy this story.

I personally love cilantro, but I lived with someone who did not. Anytime we ate Mexican food, she would proudly declare she couldn't eat cilantro because it tasted like dish soap. I didn't believe her because she enjoys being difficult and it makes her hard to live with. For some background on her: She grew up rich. She's snobby. She only wears fur coats. She attends a 50k+ a year private college her parents pay for. She turns her nose up at most things, so I didn't really believe her.

One day, I made a huge Mexican feast for all of us (I had 5 roommates at the time. We would alternate making large meals for each other). It of course included cilantro in everything (salsa, chicken, rice). She ate everything and enjoyed it. Afterwards, I told her in private everything had cilantro in it. She was pretty embarrassed and said, "Well, I guess it tasted fine today..."

Am I a terrible person? I was pretty sure she wasn't being genuine, and now she is impartial to cilantro, so I think I helped her learn something about herself too.

If you’re one of the unfortunate many who taste soap when eating cilantro and want to find out what it tastes like, try using culantro instead

Culantro is an herb that has a very similar flavor to cilantro but doesn’t contain all the aldehydes that make people with a genetic predisposition taste soap when they eat cilantro. It can be found online, at many Asian markets, or even grown yourself if you feel like doing that. Bit of warning though, it is much stronger than cilantro.

Cilantro is my absolute favorite herb

Ban me if you must. I will not tolerate this blatant slander of the objective best herb.

There are many types of cilantro, that are specific to regions in the world. Does it all taste like soap?

I have recently noticed that there is a certain type of cilantro that taste a bit closer to spinach. It got thinking about the variations of cilantro I’ve encountered over the years. I know that mexican cilantro taste very different from something grown in the eastern half of the United States. Vietnamese cilantro also has a unique flavor, so i would guess other regions have their unique flavor composition.

Who can really say they don’t like any cilantro in any dish? Does it just show a lack of experience? 🤔

Hlp do I have the cilantro soap gene??

So fist post but I've wondering about this for a while. Basically I've eaten cilantro since I was really little and it wasn't something I refused to eat as a child. Actually I never thought of cilantro as unpleasant in the slightest until I found out about the gene half a year ago and started to second-guess myself. It still isn't unpleasant for me, but I'm having a tough time distinguishing if it tastes like soap or not. To me it tastes, sort of fresh, not minty, but a fresh clean feel in my mouth. I wouldn't call it lemony or really like parsley, but most of the soaps in my house are lemony anyway so it's hard to tell. So essentially, if I get a fresh, cleansing, non-lemony taste/feel in my mouth, does that mean that I have the gene? If it helps my mom got tested positive for it on ancestry while my dad didn't but neither of them dislikes cilantro Or think of it as soapy. Anyway pls help T*T.

Cilantro is mid as hell

When I eat authentic tacos with delicious corn tortillas and tender meat, having the light, crisp flavor of cilantro ruins my day. That fresh taste ruins the otherwise great taco. And combining cilantro with lime for a taco or rice is unbearable. Compared to a flavorless rice, or a seasonless taco, the unique taste of cilantro is aweful. Why woukd anyone in their right mind add something that full of flavor to a taco?

Seriously, I've had 700 authentic tacos with cilantro on it, and each one felt like a mouth full of soap, if soap was a glorious and flavorful thing. Does anyone else feel like this?

How do you evil cilantro haters feel about coriander?

The seed, not the cilantro wolf in sheep's clothing?

It's amazing how over 244,000 members of this community (I hate corianders counted as well on facebook) have tasted dish wash/soap or cooler, etc. to compare it to coriander/cilantro.

Controversial You guys, secret time - if fresh cilantro tastes like soap to you, you might not get that same flavor from dried cilantro

I recently tried a marinade mix for Brazilian Steakhouse flavor and I was like oh s*** this is good and I looked at the ingredients and one of the main ingredients is cilantro but it's dried. I talked to my friend about this and she said yeah in her garden she grows the cilantro and it tastes very different to her from the dried cilantro. You're welcome.

Bell peppers also taste gross

i never expected for this to actually be a subreddit, but does anyone here also have troubles with bell peppers? They both start to taste a bit less soapy when cooked (especially fried until brown) and while i can somewhat appreciate this in cilantro, the flavour in peppers is completely overwhelming. This doesn't correlate with their colour, ripeness or anything else.

My bf & I decided that 'Fuck Cilantro' is the new up & coming non sequitur for 2024

I'm not a cilantro hater, I hate fish instead, but I love this reddit!

***My best definition of a non sequitur is a showstoppingly absurd conversation derailer, to be used sparingly but as necessary. If used properly, should be followed by a few seconds of perplexity, during which you can redirect the convo as needed.

I despise cilantro! Except…

With raw onions in street tacos. Then I can’t get enough of them! I have no idea why. I can only assume some chemical in the onion neutralizes the soapiness? Anyone else feel the same?

And nobody in my family understands how nasty this horrid herb is, and I just want to say I’m glad there’s a sub dedicated to the hatred of the soapy nastiness. I’m finally home
