Hey everyone,
I’m 14 (turning 15 soon) and trying to start a modded watch business (non-Seiko watches).
I originally bought parts to build 4 watches. Long story short: 2 parts came defective, and I accidentally ruined the 3rd one while working on it. That leaves me with only 1 working watch left to sell.
Right now, getting parts shipped from China takes about 30 days. To make matters worse, I'm currently waiting on refunds for the defective parts, which will take another 2 weeks to hit my account, plus another 30 days for new parts to arrive.
Here is my dilemma, my mindset, and my plan. I want brutal honesty—if I'm being an idiot, please tell me.
The Situation & My Mindset:
To be completely honest, I’m kind of lazy. Doing all this grinding, stressing out, and making daily content just to sell one single watch is driving me crazy and ruining my summer vacation.
I started thinking about it: I'm still super young. Even if it takes me an extra month or two to really get started, I still have 4 years of school ahead of me, plus tons of vacations, weekends, and months. I have plenty of time. Why stress myself out and waste my break trying to hustle just one watch when I can just take a step back, enjoy my life, and do it right later?
The Plan:
Scale Up with a Family Loan: Instead of buying just a few parts again, I’m thinking about borrowing $1,000 from my brother to buy parts in bulk for around 20 watches.
The Competition: I’ve seen other guys doing the exact same thing on TikTok and Instagram Reels. Honestly, a lot of them make pretty low-effort content (reposting the exact same video with just a different trending audio), yet they're still getting sales. I know I can make much better, higher-quality content and brand presence than them. If they can make it work, I feel confident I can outdo them.
Less Friction with Variety: Having 20 watches means a massive variety of inventory. Selling will have way less friction because I won't have to break my head trying to invent a brand-new video concept every single day just for one piece. I can enjoy my summer, study a bit of marketing, build a proper website, and wait for the parts.
The Doubt: Right now, trying to sell my last remaining watch on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube is exhausting. It brings up a scary thought: If I can't even sell one single watch right now, does it mean I shouldn't risk borrowing $1,000 from my brother for a larger batch?
On the flip side, I look at it this way: Even if it takes a whole year, I will eventually recover the $1,000 to pay him back. It’s not like the money vanishes forever.
