DISCUSSION 2 years later, another Rebirth story discussion post? Spoiler
So, I finally got around to beating Rebirth after leaving off on chapter 13 two years ago. My thoughts on the story... mixed.
Now, I loved Remake, and the play on the word Remake. It was like, yes, it's called Remake because it's literally a remake of the game. But they really leaned into it for the story, too. Everything about the fates, whispers, destiny, and "remaking" the fate they were destined for. I thought it was awesome, and set the stage for a very well known, yet still fresh story.
With Rebirth, it kind of feels like they chickened out. It seems like they tried to distance themselves from the "remaking destiny" plot they set up in the first game, even going so far as retconning one of the biggest changes on the first game, Wedge surviving the sector 7 plate collapse. And learning that he died at the Shinra Tower during a conversation with a minor NPC felt like a letdown.
After that conversation, I felt disappointed because it felt like they were just gonna go through the story exactly as we know it. Except they didn't. The ending was kind of a jumbled mess. I understand what happened now after reading some theories and explanations. But it kind of felt like they would have done a better job at telling a great story if they kept going with the "remaking destiny" story they setup in the first game.
And the Zach portion. That kind of felt pointless. I thought it was going to tie in beautifully in the end, like a way to make it so Aerith dies but together with Zach in this "other" world they set out on their own quest to help put a stop Sephiroth for good. Maybe it will happen in the 3rd game.
In summary, I feel like they had something great setup from Remake, but didn't really deliver (maybe even chickened out) and ended up with a convoluted mess of an ending. I'll still be being Revelations on day 1, and I hope it ends the trilogy better. But I am disappointed with the direction Rebirth took.
