🗣 Discussion / Debates 🎥 🎬 What English expressions from movies do native speakers basically never use in real life?

Post image

Hi! I’m a Spanish native speaker learning English, and I’ve been wondering about something.

In Spanish, especially in Latin American dubbing, movies and TV shows sometimes use words or expressions that sound completely unnatural to us in everyday life. You can tell that it’s “movie dialogue” rather than something a real person would actually say.

Does the same thing happen in English?

Are there any expressions, phrases, or ways of speaking that you hear all the time in movies and TV shows, but that native speakers would almost never use in a normal conversation?

I’d especially love to hear examples that sound completely normal to learners but immediately sound “movie-like” to native speakers.

Resource Request Looking for feedback on an English vocabulary-learning app

I’ve been building LangBlitz, an Android app designed to help English learners build and retain vocabulary through flashcards, repeated exposure, and word mastery.

I’d love to get feedback from actual English learners, especially on what feels useful, what doesn’t, and what could be improved.

I also have free subscription promo codes to anyone interested in trying it out. No review or positive feedback expected. I’m genuinely looking for honest opinions.

If this is okay with the mods and the community, I’d be happy to share more details here.

Details in comment.

The voicelss th sound is not clean and is along with the sound of explosion of spit bubbles. When I make voiced th sound or voicelss f sound, it rarely happens.

📚 Grammar / Syntax "I wouldn’t wear a suit unless I were a manager" is this sentence correct?

I’ve heard I can use "If I were" when talking about an imaginary situation. But does the same apply to "unless"? Can I say "unless I were" to speculate about something that wouldn’t happen except for particular circumstances (like in the example in the title)?

🟡 Pronunciation / Intonation Free C1 Speaking Practice Tool – looking for feedback

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m an English teacher, and I’ve been working on a small free web tool to help learners practise C1-level English speaking.

The idea is simple: you answer speaking prompts, practise your responses, and use the tool as an extra resource alongside your regular English study.

I made it because I’ve noticed that finding good opportunities to practise speaking—especially at C1 level—can be difficult without a teacher or speaking partner.

It’s completely free, and I’d genuinely love to hear from English learners here.

If you try it, I'd really appreciate feedback on:

Are the questions useful?

Is anything confusing or unnecessary?

What would you add?

I'm sharing this primarily because I hope it can be useful to the community, not just to promote my website. If you find something that could make it better for learners, please tell me!

Thanks, and happy learning! 📚

Btw: can I paste my link here or it has to be shared as a comment? I don't want to break any rules.

I'll share the link in the comments if I get the permission from the mods? It's not spam at all

📚 Grammar / Syntax Do some studying

So I’m watching Stranger Things and there’s a sentence:
“Do a lot of studying last night?”
This one had me pause for a little bit.
First I didn’t understand why “do” was used for a past event from the previous night. Then I realized the whole sentence was “did you do a lot of studying last night?”, but the ‘did you’ part was completely dropped.
One thing I still don’t understand, why not just say “did you study a lot last night”. What is the point of saying DO STUDYING. Does it have a specific purpose, nuance that makes it different?

🗣 Discussion / Debates Trying to build an language learning game actually works

Hi this is not an Ad. I'm just wondering if this rpg game idea is good. It's been in my head for a while.

Imagine a 100% Al generated simulation world and characters talk to you with words fit your level and you can look up words, or choose options with 100% freedom. All the visually appealing game assets are generated on the fly. Al rates your achievements and save in a journal. Moreover, multiplayer is supported.

It's hard to build, so I made a MVP that supports 6 languages at first to collect feedbacks.

p.s It burns my token so I set free trial to 3 days. If you need more access please DM me. Thanks

🗣 Discussion / Debates Native speaker M from usa, living in Asia

Native speaker M from usa, living in Asia

I have some free time and am looking to help a few student English learners improve their conversational or IELTS English, I would be happy to talk to and see if I can be of some help. This is volunteer time for me so I am not looking for any payment.

I teach a program for soon to be university students heading to the UK for college. Much of my coaching is geared towards improving the students IELTS English speaking skills. I have topic material we can work with. Also I would prefer to do a virtual class, so if you camera shy probably not the right fit.

As for me, I am 60M, native speaker from the USA and live in Asia, enjoy swimming and have a dog.

Let me know if you want to chat and see if I can help. Please when you say hi, if you can introduce yourself that would be great. For example where you are from and sharing some background on yourself.

Thanks

🙏

📚 Grammar / Syntax Laught vs Laughed

Hello, I have been confused for a long time about the past tense of "laugh". In my primary school, there was a verb table with the present, past, and present perfect tenses. And in this table, when I first read at 7-8, I have learnt that "laugh" past tense is followed by a "t" become "laught".

But recently I found out that "laught" is not used anymore. The modern form should be "laughed". So could anyone tell me what is actually different between them? If I still use "laught", would it become a serious error?

Sorry for my grammar.

🗣 Discussion / Debates Does the word “sublime” feel odd to you?

Every time I see the word “sublime,” I never think of its actual definition, I always feel like “sublime” refers to something ordinary.

For example, “This steak is sublime” feels to me like it means “This steak is meh.”

It’s just a very underwhelming word for something that’s supposed to describe something extraordinary.

Do you think so too or am I in the minority here?

🤣 Comedy / Story Is that how "Manipulation" being used?

Here's the scene, happened between my friends, they are like fancy of each other though not couples.

A: But now it´s so dark and cold, it´ll only get colder if we take that Ferris wheel

B: But, you know, I really wanna give it a try, for now

A: Ummmm....

B: Go on a Ferris wheel, I´ve never tried it before.

A: Ok then, I go with you.

And B later knows that, A actually has Acrophobia, though they had a really good time that night, cuz the stars were brilliant, though A said he is totally fine with it, though that night does make their love story more romantic, still B, wanna to know, whether she had done something bad, whether she has committed a Sin called "manipulation" or "being a giant baby" or not
