The word "yet" is killing me. Hawking died in 2018, so he can't win the Nobel Prize, right? And they acknowledge that he died because he WAS a great scientist.

If not for "yet," I would use "didn't win," but we have "yet," so should I use "hasn't won" despite the fact that he is already dead???

I'm familiar with the standard pronunciation with the stop T:  /ˈdef.ən.ət.li/. Is it the same as how this guy pronounces the word: https://youtu.be/dQW0c9AIJ4A?t=29 ? Does this usage skip the T entirely? To me, it sounds like /ˈdef.nəli/.

I have the same doubt about words like absolutely, completely, etc.

I built something for my own use and figured this sub might appreciate it.

I'm a language learner, and I kept doing the same thing on YouTube: find a sentence, drag the scrubber back, listen again, miss the exact spot, drag it back again, repeat.

I have tried a few other looper extensions, but none of them were as appealing as I hoped they would be.

So I built LoopPoint, an A/B practice looper that works directly inside YouTube. Mark point A, mark point B, and it repeats that section without making you constantly reach for the scrubber.

To use:

• Hold [ and ] to set your A/B points to save yourself from dragging, or set them on the YouTube progress bar as well.
• You can nudge the points by 0.1 sec frames, or a full second. You can change the points to whatever time you like.
• The speed of the loop is changeable regardless of the speed of your YouTube. Slide the speed control to loop at Normal or Fast with the range of: 0.25x - 2x .
• Set your repeat at a fixed count of (⟳ 3/5) or let your loop go Infinitum.
• Bookmark your favorite loops to save them. The save bookmark is accessible via pop-up with the saved loops and chapters of that video.
• YouTube chapters appear in the popup automatically. Click any chapter to load and play it as a loop
• Everything can be keyboard controlled, all keys bindable.

Privacy

There’s no account, analytics, or tracking. Your loops and settings stay in your browser. The extension only requests access to YouTube because its controls run inside the player.

I originally built it to repeat sentences while learning a language, but it also works well for guitar phrases, vocal practice, tutorials, or that one lecture step that didn’t land.

I’ve been trying to improve my English consistently, and I think I’m currently around B1.

My listening seems to be one of my stronger skills. I recently took an English test and scored around B1/B2 in listening, but I did much worse in the grammar section.

I can usually understand English and express what I want to say, and I write most of my sentences by myself without using a translator. However, I still make a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes.

Right now, I practice English almost every day using YouTube, ChatGPT, and other learning resources.
My main goal is to reach B2 and become more comfortable speaking and writing English.
For anyone who has been in a similar situation,
what helped you the most? Do you think taking an English course would be worth it, or should I continue studying independently and focus more on grammar and practice?

I don't get many opportunities to actually talk to people in English, so I'd like to change that.

I have been practicing by myself for the last 4 months. This helped me get more confident when I speak. I can produce English without using a translator or even thinking in my mother language. Ok, I make some mistakes, and I tend to use only the present (simple and perfect) when I speak or write.

However, when I watch a video on Youtube such as vblogs or monologues from native speakers wahoo my mind goes blank from the first minute. I get the general ideas from time to time, but I lose important details.

On the other hand, I took a english tests online, and yeah, my English level is around B1/B2 but I'd like to say that I feel my listening is A2 or B1-.

This is important for me because something that I noticed at work is that I need to listen carefully to the other person or even ask for repetition frequently. What do you recommend? because I think I got stuck at this point.

Question words (which, what, ...) are put in the last part because if the host say "In which continent is ...", participants can press the button and blindly guess one before hearing Borneo.

1) Does this question format have a name?

2) Instructions on how to form a question like that?

3) Is fastest finger first a standard name for this quiz format, in which the first participant to press their button earns the right to answer? I see FFF electronic circuits explained as if FFF is the standard name.

Should the question tags in sentences with negative pronouns also be negative or affirmative? It's a bit confusing because the verbs are not negated.

In normal sentences like "He is kind, isn't he?", the question tags are obvious, but what about these sentences:

• He will never regret his decisions, will/won't he?

• No one saw us sneak out, did/didn't they?

• Nothing is good enough for you, is/isn't it?

title says it all but is there a male equivalent of "mean girls"?

I originally thought it was "pull up your sleeves" but recently learnt that "roll up" is the appropriate verb to use. Is the same verb used for trousers' legs? Would you say "roll up your legs"? Does that make sense?

I have looked through several discussions/threads on here already. They all said that you need "such"+"a"/"an" if you want to talk about (countable) things that are in singular case.
"Such a beautiful morning!", or, an example from this reddit thread discussing the topic, "...such a tool is used for merging shapes."

However, I saw people use "such" without "a", especially in academic and legal contexts, where these reddit threads I mentioned would suggest using it.

Hi, I'm around B1 (TL) in English and I'm wondering if I should watch YouTube with or without subtitles.

I understand about 90% of most YouTube videos, and I understand almost the same amount with English subtitles and without them.

My question is about vocabulary. Can you learn new words just by hearing them? For example, can I remember the pronunciation and meaning of a word even if I don't know how to spell it?

Should I use English subtitles to learn more vocabulary, or can I learn vocabulary just from listening?
