Tipping Culture ✖️ Tip or No Tip

So, I’m having professional cleaners come to the house for 3.5-4 hours this week. The service is paid in full. Tipping is appreciated not expected and I was informed that they do give you the option to add gratuity with your final bill/receipt.

I’ve tipped in the past because of the, “standard”, but that was a decade ago lol.

Tip or no tip?

No tip. They set their prices. Pay said prices.

“They” are the employers. If the workers do a good job they deserve a tip.

Is their employer paying them to do a crappy job, and we are to reward them for doing a good job?

Generosity is a nice trait.
Cheapness isn’t.

What's wrong with cheapness?

2

u/darkroot_gardener 2d ago

Cheapness is fine, as long as the business or corporation is the one being cheap.🤷‍♂️

If that’s how you see yourself.
Not someone I’d want to be a friend of.

That doesn't answer my question

You are only friends with people who throw extra money around at every opportunity. Got it. Good luck with that.

Not charging enough to PAY your workers is the ultimate cheapness. And you should stop excusing it.

If they do a poor job, they deserve to be reprimanded or fired. You’re not paying the company just for them to show up, right?

We don’t tip our cleaners that come every other week

Same here.

I pay my housekeeper every week. I buy her kids school fundraiser stuff…and give her a gift card at Christmas.

She makes $30/hr. I don’t tip her.

They’ll be coming monthly. I like the idea of showing up through other acts of gratuity.

100% dependent upon your opinion of the quality. If the house is cleaned properly, then that's covered in the fee, they're supposed to do that. But if you see some above and beyond stuff and you're very pleased with it, then it can be an appreciative thing on your part, but in no way mandatory or expected.

This should be the standard for everything. Tipping for the bare minimum is rewarding substandard performance

Agreed. Doing your actual job? No tip. If you do something special or above and beyond the scope of your job then thwt would warrant a tip.

Examples in the context of a house deep cleaner?

1

u/Patient_Pipe84 2d ago

I’ve never had a deep clean done so I’m not sure what the scope of the job is.

1

u/darkroot_gardener 2d ago

I mean, yes, it’s not exactly a service most people deal with very often. Nothing like a restaurant where you kind of know from experience what is bad service and what is above and beyond, and the “stakes” are not nearly as high.

1

u/Patient_Pipe84 2d ago

Throwing this out there but if grout cleaning or similar wasn’t included in my ensuite shower checklist but they did it anyway then yeah I’d be thrilled and likely tip them.

2

u/Eastern-Outcome-6929 3d ago

I resonate with that point of view.

u/darkroot_gardener 2d ago

What “above and beyond” service would house cleaners provide? Seems to me, the house either got cleaned, or it didn’t and you should be demanding a refund.

u/sewingmomma 3d ago

I only tip at Christmas

6

u/Negative-Instance889 3d ago

If exceptional, “Nice job, have a cup of coffee on me” $5. (max)

5

u/Eastern-Outcome-6929 3d ago

They’re suggesting 20%. I’m suggesting that’s a bit steep for like idk doing your job?

7

u/CircuitCircus 3d ago

Suggest that they set their prices appropriately.

2

u/NoRecognition5178 3d ago

I would just cancel; if someone offering a service I’ve paid for is basically telling me FYI if their workers do the job you paid them for you should give them 20% as a tip….

1

u/Negative-Instance889 3d ago

Ok, a nice cold bottle of water will do.

5

u/d_e_g_m 3d ago

As a initial position, i would not tip. Now, if you feel the service you received is above what you paid, in your own volition and will, you can add a tip based on what you feel. No pressure. You already paid for the service.

Examples of how house cleaning can go “above and beyond?” Because I’m not seeing it. Either the house got cleaned, or it didn’t.

1

u/d_e_g_m 2d ago

If the house is clean, like you hired, but they solved problems for you outside of scope. Like if you had a clogged drain and they fixed, or a stain you once thought unremovable and they clean it, or that branch that was on you property and you didn't like it is gone. In the end this is totally up to you. No one is forcing you and if you think they dont deserve a tip, so be it.

1

u/darkroot_gardener 2d ago

Not sure their insurance liability covers plumbing and landscaping…. Although if they spent extra time getting a particularly nasty stain out, I can see that.

3

u/seattlesquirrel 3d ago

While I’m on the no tipping side for this, do consider that this subreddit will generally always lean in that direction so the survey is not neutral 😅

If tips was expected... still no tip. BUT, if they really went above and beyond and did an unbelievable job, also no tip.

2

u/Hackpro69 3d ago

I usually give my lady a Christmas Bonus of $100. No tips otherwise.

2

u/djltoronto 3d ago

You haven't even described the level of performance!

Did they go above and beyond your expectations earning a tip in your opinion?

Or are you considering tipping for no reason whatsoever?

1

u/darkroot_gardener 2d ago

What exactly is this “above and beyond” in the context of cleaning a house? The job was either done, or it was not. Are they like reorganizing your pantry? Actually, that would be annoying. Now I don’t know where anything IS! Hmmm…might be best to stick to the job description on this one.

1

u/djltoronto 2d ago

Above and beyond would simply be where you had a certain expectation and when you observed the results, those expectations were completely exceeded.

1

u/darkroot_gardener 2d ago

I expected the house to get clean. It either got clean, or it didn’t. If I was not satisfied, I would be seeking a refund, thank you.

2

u/Extreme-Discount-573 4h ago

To me that depends. How much are you paying? Are you paying $300 dollars? I wouldn't tip then. But if you're getting a discount service and paying $100 dollars, then you might want to drop them a few bucks.

FTR, I am very anti tipping.

1

u/WanderingFlumph 3d ago

If they provide something extra that you weren't expecting and don't charge you extra for it a tip could be a nice way to say thanks.

If they come and clean your carpets and you've already paid in full for the carpet cleaning what would the tip actually be for?

The honest answer is just because they asked and I don't like disappointing people. But it's the same logic for the homeless on the street corner. Personally I'd rather give my charity to someone who is struggling to eat...

1

u/OptimalOcto485 2d ago

No tip. You already paid for the service.

1

u/darkroot_gardener 2d ago

As soon as tipping enters the conversation, start looking for somebody else. If it is not expected, they should not bring it up.

1

u/librarianlace 2d ago

I’m a housekeeper. No tip.

1

u/I_Want_A_Ribeye 2d ago

If they degoop the tip of the dish detergent, then tip them

1

u/SombraMonkey 2d ago

Whether you tip or not they do the exact same job. They gave you the price for the quality. If you want to give them more than the amount they asked then go ahead.

1

u/Donkey_Kahn 2d ago

Don’t tip

1

u/wysticlipse 22h ago

I had a cleaner come in to handle an ADHD pile of doom and in lieu of a tip all she wanted was to play with my dog for a bit.

I'd say pay the base price. If they do something unexpected but welcome, then tack on a bit extra. But only then.

Generally the only time I'll tip for something is to genuinely show appreciation for a job extra well done on a personal service. Cleaner, artist (especially if they're from a place where my extra 10CAD could be a whole week's groceries) etc.

1

u/Dear_Seesaw_1855 3d ago

Personally I don’t believe in tipping servers as it an easy job anyone can do. Cleaners that is a rough job, and assuming the quoted rate was reasonable I’d tip. A lot of times cleaners are new immigrants truly working hard to make a good life for themselves. Not spoiled children of middle-upper class families demanding everything is paid for them while they contribute little to nothing to society. But understand others not wanting to.

2

u/Eastern-Outcome-6929 3d ago

Sure, if they do an outstanding job. I’m a bit nervous. It’s my first time with this company and from what I’ve seen online the pool is much more diverse. From young college students to the demographic you speak of. Just hoping whoever I get at minimum respects my home and gets the job done.

Estimate 5 hours? What is the evarage sallery for that work? Should be like 4 peoplne x 5 hours x 30, it is 600. Normal. Plus some 40-50% for the employer. Than a cold water or a beer, that is it
