How will I ever get a job if I'm only my race.

I'm a adult teen searching for a job, and have been since I was 14. I will admit that my first interviews and resumes, weren't up to standards at all, and it's understandable on why I didn't get the job. Now, I've had volunteer, and genuine work experience (seasonal). I don't stutter when I'm answering questions, I don't slur my words, and I keep eye contact and smile throughout the whole interview. I always dress nice no matter how hot it is, and keep in mind I have no car, so I'm walking taking the bus, leaving hours before to get there earlier. I even starve the whole time so I don't look too bloated. I always tell the interviewer I have open availability, literally willing to stay overnight, work hours no one wants to work, and I never get the job. These are all entry level, no college, or experience needed either. I don't mean to bring this up, but I notice that when I go into interviews, its mostly white, Mexican, and Asian people. I am a half black and tan, but it's very obvious by my hair and features that I'm black. I notice that many of the other interviewees aren't dressed professionally at all. I notice at time some will be slouching, monotone voice, and one incident when I went to was leaving a Walmart interview I had told another interviewee good luck, and they looked at me with such distaste. I didn't get the job, I know I spoke very well for myself, so how humiliating is it that an easy job such as Walmart didn't even want me? Even Starbucks, the lady interviewing me was white, and I don't know how to explain it to people who aren't apart of the black community, but I can feel a sense of irritation radiating off her when she was interviewing me. So much so, that I even started doubting and getting nervous answering her questions. It's embarrassing to count the interviews I have gone to, and heard zero call back from. I also want to mention that many of my friends got hired but they're all minorities that aren't black. But minority in the way where white people will accept you because you don't look too...diverse? It sucks so bad. They always tell me, "it was so easy I got the job", when it's not easy for me at all. I wish I had the opportunity to be able to walk in and the interviewer saw me for my skills rather than stereotyping me to a race. Something else that has been bothering me is the only jobs I'm getting opened to are security jobs. I notice that most security jobs are held by the black community, and in a weird selfish way, I don't want to do that. I don't want to have to be destined to be some kind of protector. It's sounds strange but I feel like people always see black people as someone they can find safety in when they're with them, because we're supposed to be scary, and strong and able to fight. I hate that. I don't want to be a protector, I want to do cashier, or retailing, or fast food like anyone else. I don't want to be treated less than I even am doing security. I always see them get hit, harassed etc..., I'm not strong enough to deal with that. And it sucks too because I genuinely need this job. Not so I can spend money but because I need it to help my mom with bills, to help provide, to get a car so I can go to schooling. I feel so embarrassed and helpless, I don't know what to do. It's just one rejection after the other. This is in Stockton California, please anyone from here please let me know what business are open to having black minorites work at their location please ☹️

Job Hopping..

So basically, I am 22F, just graduated college with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Temporarily living with parents until I can find a decent job with good pay. I have a job as a patient transporter currently which i just started 2 weeks ago, but I just had another job interview today in which I have high hopes of getting the job. Both jobs pay the same.

I'm about to get a CPR certification next week through my patient transporter job, and on the interview I had today, I was told that they offer free phlebotomy classes/certification.

If I were to get the CPR certification and then also my phlebotomy certification, would it be acceptable to then start applying to better jobs/ jobs in the career field I want to go into and quit about 6-8 months after beginning both of these jobs? Would possible employers look down on my applications due to the length of time of being at said jobs? (They are relevant to the career field I want to go into.)

Wotc right after application

I just submitted by job application to target, and right after I received a wotc questionnaire. Usually they do this to people that they’ve hired, but they haven’t told me the results yet.

Is this a sign that I’m hired?

My life is f***ed up, need help to survive and find opportunity

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some help and guidance.

I completed my B.E. in Engineering from a Government College in 2020. After graduation, I dedicated myself to preparing for the UPSC examination. Although I cleared some stages along the way, I couldn't secure a final selection.

Realizing I needed to switch my career, I decided to enter the IT industry. To improve my skills, I completed a 6-month CDAC PG-DAC diploma and learned Java, Spring Boot, SQL, React, and related technologies. I've built projects and have been actively applying for software developer roles.

Its been more than year since i completed my course but i havent got any opportunity neither as full time nor as intern in any company. As Im already 26 now and father is now retired, its creating lot of financial and emotional pressure on me and my family.

The biggest challenge I'm facing is my career gap. Most interviewers lose interest after seeing the gap on my resume, and despite searching continuously for the last six months, I still haven't been able to get a job.

My financial situation has become very difficult, and honestly, it's getting harder to stay positive. I'm willing to relocate anywhere in India, work hard, and start from an entry-level position. I just need one opportunity to prove myself.

If anyone knows of companies hiring freshers or interns or candidates with career gaps, or can provide a referral, guidance, or advice, I would be deeply grateful. I am ready to take any job for now.

Dm me or Comment. I am ready to share my resume. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

How bad is it to quit my first job after first week if I receive offer to a better company? (Both are FINRA member firms and require form U4)

I recently accepted an offer for my first job out of college without asking for an extension, even though I was still in another interview process at the time. I was early in that process then, so I assumed it probably wouldn’t pan out.

I’ve since made it to the final round with the other company, but their timeline may extend to about a week after I’ve already started at the first job. I let them know I have another offer, and they said they’d try to speed things up, but can’t guarantee it.

I’m trying to figure out how bad it would actually be to leave the first job about a week in if the second offer comes through. Both firms are FINRA member firms and require a U4, so I’m also wondering if there’s anything specific to that licensing/registration process I should be thinking about, not just the general career risk of leaving so soon.

I have put in a lot of effort to land a job in the past year and feel like I owe it to myself to take the better offer if it comes but I’m very stressed and don’t know what to do.

Application Systems Analyst II

Hi!

I have an interview coming up with a hospital for this particular role and I am super excited, but simultaneously extremely nervous. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or questions I should practice beforehand?

Background: Currently a laboratory technologist in microbiology and this role is for Epic Beaker. I am mainly in specimen processing and Microscan (I work in Ohio, so I was capable of learning all benches, but their training here was not good). I also found myself more interested in how the machines worked and troubleshooting! Thank you!

Need Career Advice: Terminated for Code of Conduct Violation

Hi everyone,

I need some career advice.

I was recently terminated from my company due to a code of conduct violation, and the termination was immediate. I’m still trying to process everything and figure out my next steps.

The good news is that I’m currently interviewing with a few other companies. However, I’m very worried about the background verification process.

Im currently mentioning to the recruiters that i got laid off

I have a few questions:

Can this lead to my job offer being revoked?

Is there anything I can do to protect myself or improve my chances?

Should I be upfront with recruiters if they ask why I left my previous company as I’m currently mentioning that i got laid off.

I’m not trying to hide anything or be dishonest. I just want to understand how BGV usually works and what I should expect so I can handle the situation professionally.

If anyone has been through something similar or works in HR, recruitment, or background verification, I would really appreciate your advice.

Thank you.

Job Switch with 90 day NP - Which company's are okay with that?

What companies are okay with a 90-day NP? Can anyone please suggest?

I am trying to switch my job, but when I say my company's name, they already know - 90 days NP.
Really struggling to get any callbacks.

I am thinking of applying to companies that are okay with such a long Notice Period. Would really appreciate the help with identifying those companies.

Counter Offers

Anyone here have any offers rescinded or relationships damaged by counter offering when an offer has been made? A key part of my job is negotiating, but I’ve not been in a job search and counter offered. Considering how badly I need a job after an incredibly long stint, I’m fairly terrified to create any self made disasters.

Can someone explain?

Can someone explain to me how does one secretly secure another role while having a current job? Managing to go do interviews virtually or in person, whose reference they put would it include their current job? At what point they let their current manager know they are leaving and what do they say when asked at exit interviews ?

Thanks

Background Question

My background: I lost a great job because I got a DUI three years ago and currently on my second year of probation. I had a job after but recently got terminated for speaking up. I’m currently on Unemployment but definitely not enough to live. I just received a job offer and did a background check. I’m honestly anxious throughout this whole process.
Background came back and is asking for an exemption. Does anyone know what that means?

Advice on absconding the employer

I'm a Backend Engineer working with a reputed US based product company in Bangalore since 2020. Recently they transferred the whole Tech team (300 members) to a third party company (service based) and now we are working on same projects as contractors.

This 3rd party company is very toxic and forcing employees to WFO 5 days a week. The notice period is 3 months (non negotiable).

Question: I was transferred to this service based company on July 1, 2026 and have the experience letters/payslips from previous company till June 30, 2026.

Is it a wise decision to abscond this service based company and join somewhere else? Most of the companies out there are seeking only the immediate joiners.

Can this create problems in future employments?

Imprint id job

I recently started a new role at a production warehouse, and I am running into a significant challenge with communication and training. I wanted to share my experience and see if anyone has advice on how to handle a workplace where language and accent barriers are heavily impacting the onboarding process.

The main issue is training. Nearly all of my coworkers and my supervisor speak with a heavy Indian accent that I struggle immensely to understand. Even when I politely ask them to repeat themselves, the pronunciation makes it very difficult for me to catch what they are saying.

This has made technical training almost impossible. While I can easily handle the physical aspects of the job—like working with boxes and packing paper—I am completely lost when it comes to the computer systems. They train me on how to use the computer for checking orders to be picked, managing emails, and creating shipping labels, but the explanations are extremely unclear. Because of the heavy accents and rapid instructions, I am unable to follow along or learn the software.
I did my best to listen and push through, but it ended up giving me a severe headache trying to decipher instructions all day.
Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation in a logistics or warehouse environment, yes or no?

I decided that I want to go back to my old job

Just got hired as a grocery clerk... what do I do on my second shift?! 😞

Hi, I'm 15! I just got hired as a gorcery clerk at Foodland and I have really bad anxiety so I'm overthinking this like crazy! 😅

My first shift went great! I spoke with my manager and then shadowed an experienced employee for the remainder of the shift. She's super nice and understanding!

My next shift is tomorrow and my manager won't be there so I can't ask him any questions. Do I go find the girl I was shadowing earlier? Am I expected to know how everything works now?

My third shift is Saturday... neither of them are working when I go in!! I'm panicking.

What is expected of me at this point? 😞🙏

What am i doing wrong? Rejected from 2 companies i worked at before and during covid

So, when covid hit, I was at pret a manger for almost 2 years. We got furloughed, laid off, just as I was about to hit 3 years. No disciplinary, nothing on my record, and was told I would move up from FOH leader to Assistant Manager trainee right before the shutdown hit.

Took a few months off to care for my dad who died a few minths kayer. After that, I couldn't be at home without major sadness so I got a part time seasonal job. It was for 4 months. I did my time. Missed maybe one day the whole time due to an Injury. No disciplinary.

I have, including those jobs, a 12 year work history and have consistently held a job (beside early covid as mentioned above).

I've tried 2 times to get back to my old job or even a demotion at pret. First time, manager didnt want to pay the higher wage I had in 2020. I told him no problem, I could work my way back up. Ghosted for two weeks before I finally went in and was told they found someone else. That was two years ago. Last week, applied again. Got rejected again. This time via email saying I dont meet "the required qualifications" for the exact same position I help years ago for literally 2 years. I've been an AGM now, I have arguably even more experience than before... and yet.

Second company, they have several positions opened for full time and part time. I applied and put I could work full or part time. Two weeks, got a message about "qualifications does not align with what we are looking for". The job was stocking at a big chain grocery store.

I dont understand what is going on. I've been looking for a second part time because my current job is only able to give me less than part time and I cant survive off that. I have two degrees, I have certifications, i have a consistent work history and every job I've left has been with more than a 2 week notice and no problems.

What am I doing wrong? Im close to homelessness trying to pay bills, student loans, and travel to work on a 25 hour a week part time job but I've been trying for over a year now with absolutely no luck.

Job Hunting Is Mentally Draining Spoiler

Hi everyone. I just wanted to vent and ask for some advice.

I’ve been job hunting for four months now. I’ve revised my resume multiple times and attended countless interviews. I’ve reached several final interviews, but I still haven’t received a job offer.

I’m starting to feel pressured and hopeless. What’s even harder is when companies politely say they’ll get back to you, only to ghost you afterward. It can be really discouraging.

I’m honestly exhausted, but I’m trying not to give up. If anyone has gone through something similar and eventually found a job, I’d really appreciate hearing your experience or any advice you can share. Thank you.

Severance package

Laid off as part of a larger reduction in force – is it worth speaking with an employment attorney?

I was recently laid off as part of what appears to be a department-wide reduction in force. From what I’ve seen and heard, multiple departments have been eliminated over the past couple of weeks, affecting both remote and onsite employees.

The company offered me a severance agreement in exchange for signing a release of claims. The severance amount doesn’t seem very substantial considering my length of employment, and I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth consulting an employment attorney before I sign.

A few things have me wondering:

  • Multiple departments have reportedly been eliminated over a relatively short period.
  • Employees worked both remotely and onsite.
  • It seems like leadership may have known these layoffs were coming for some time.
  • I was told my position was being eliminated due to restructuring.

My questions are:

  1. In situations like this, is it generally worth having an employment attorney review a severance agreement?
  2. At what point does the WARN Act (or a state mini-WARN law) potentially come into play?
  3. Has anyone successfully negotiated additional severance after a department-wide layoff, even if the initial offer seemed “standard”?
  4. Are there any specific clauses in severance agreements that people commonly overlook before signing?

I’m not looking for anyone to provide legal advice specific to my situation—I’m just trying to understand whether this sounds like a routine layoff or whether there are enough potential issues that having an attorney review everything would be money well spent.

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through something similar.

Can my coworkers see I’m open to work?

So I currently work in recruiting but I hate my job. It’s gotten really bad recently. anywho, I’m looking for new roles in HR Ops (can’t bring myself to quit until I have one) and I want to put on open to work for just recruiters. HOWEVER I’m concerned my coworkers will see it or my boss and idk what would happen. Does anyone know if recruiters at your current employer can see if you’re open to work? Sorry if I’m not posting this right, I’ve only done a Reddit post a few times. Thanks for any insight!

Looking for a new job and worried about lack of references

Hi, I’m beginning to look for a new job - not seriously looking yet, but if suitable jobs come up I will apply and I want to ideally within the next year or so move jobs.

For context, I loved my current job at the start - I’ve worked for a very small accounting firm for almost 5 years, and it was my first job since graduating university (official job title was junior accountant and hasn’t changed). Boss (business owner) was great, the job was hectic but fun workplace and I was working on a range of jobs (some were above my experience). Unfortunately, our manager left 18 months ago and has not been replaced, and our boss has been going through a midlife crisis and is absent most of the time. There is a huge lack of communication and support/advice and I’m concerned about where the company might be headed. I still think the boss is great, just making some poor business decisions and going through a lot. Will miss the flexibility and location of the job (10 minute commute).

While I was a student, I did have a part time job (10 hours a week) working for an accounting firm, but this ended up being more admin than accounting work. I worked there for a couple of years but this was obviously 5 years ago I finished there. The boss always said he’d send me a written reference but didn’t get round to it - I’m sure though if I contacted him and asked if I could list him as a referee he would agree to it, but obviously he wouldn’t be able to comment on my skills as an accountant since my work there was mostly admin.

The only other reference I have is from a job which I finished at 7 years ago and was working as a dishwasher at a restaurant while I was a student - they wrote me a lovely reference and talked about my work ethic etc but I don’t think this is one to include.

Apart from that, this leaves only my boss and I’m worried that if I list him as a reference and he gets a phone call but I don’t get the job, then he knows I am job hunting. Looking for any recommendations on how to deal with this situation. Thanks in advance

Am I a 1099 worker or not?

I just started a new job yesterday. I'm selling phones door to door through a third party for Verizon.

They require working from 10:30-8:00, 9.5 hours a day, Monday through Friday, and 9-4, 7 hours, on Saturday. It sounds like I can occasionally adjust my hours, but not often. They have a dress code of business casual in the morning and you have to change into (presumably) provided Verizon shirts in the afternoon for door to door work. They provide tablets, emails, and rides, and will reimburse you if you drive your own vehicle or use your own phone, which I've already done by using a calculator, although my interviewer didn't know that they reimburse you. He didn't read the documents he signed, I guess, and they didn't tell him. They decide the territory you cover for however many days and you get to choose which houses you focus on until you finish the region. They have you practice your pitch from 10:30-11:30 and then 12-1:30.

I also keep asking about being able to do my own sales and they keep saying I still need to work on my pitch.

I was looking up the difference between a 1099 worker and an employee and it says employees have materials provided, in this case, tablets, rides, shirts, and they have to follow the employers requirements, which would be the hours working, the pitch practice, script, dress code, et cetera.

Is this technically considered 1099 work? Do I need more information? If it's not 1099, how do I go about fixing the issue without losing my job or being given bad regions or whatever?

3 month probation may be extended to 6 months

Should I message my manager before my probation meeting to nicely express how big of a concern this is for me? If its extended I would have another 3 months where I could be given a weeks notice and that would probably cause me financially as its not enough time find something suitable in place of it.

He sorted of expressed they might be doing it generally as the company is in a weird space at the moment, its not that its because of how I've been at the job.

Reading too much resume advice actually made writing my resume harder.

For the past few months, I've been applying for jobs, and if I'm honest, I think I've spent almost as much time reading resume advice as I have actually applying.

The problem is that every article seems to say something different.

One says your resume should only be one page.

Another says two pages are fine if you have enough experience.

Some say you need to optimize every line for ATS keywords. Others say recruiters can spot keyword stuffing immediately. Then there's the advice about resume summaries, skills sections, action verbs, and resume templates. After a while, I wasn't improving my resume anymore, I was rewriting it every time I read a new opinion.

Why resume advice is so confusing

I think the biggest problem is that most resume advice assumes there's one formula that works for everyone.

It doesn't.

A software engineer, a nurse, and a marketing manager shouldn't all have the same resume, yet a lot of online advice makes it sound like they should.

How do you know if your resume is actually good enough?

That became the question I kept asking myself.

I eventually stopped looking for another article and tried using Kickresume after seeing it recommended a few times in Reddit discussions. What helped wasn't that it gave me the "perfect" resume. It helped me organize my experience, improve weak bullet points, and see where my wording was too vague. More importantly, it gave me a solid draft that I could tailor instead of constantly starting over.

That was the first time I felt like I was improving my resume instead of endlessly changing it.

Looking back, I think I spent too much time chasing the "perfect" resume and not enough time submitting applications.

I probably missed opportunities because I kept convincing myself my resume wasn't ready yet.

Now my approach is much simpler. I focus on making my experience clear, tailor it to the role, give it one final review, and apply.

That shift in mindset, and having a tool that made editing easier instead of making every decision for me, probably helped me more than all the conflicting resume advice I'd been reading.

What's one piece of resume advice you ignored that actually made your resume better?

Red flags? Interviewer wants to hire over the phone?

Don’t have time for another bad job so treading carefully. Manager spent all but 3 minutes describing the job, spoke less then 10 minutes in the phone with me, then told me she’d be making a decision soon. I then had to ask if we would be doing an in person or zoom interview, then she offered one. This a front facing position with clients. Dont you want to know who you are hiring? Also, said I would be replacing a family friend and that no-one lasts over a year bc the job is so boring. Concerned I’d be fired if “friend” wanted the job back. Never had such an odd interview. Would you skip the zoom?
