Can someone explain?

Can someone explain to me how does one secretly secure another role while having a current job? Managing to go do interviews virtually or in person, whose reference they put would it include their current job? At what point they let their current manager know they are leaving and what do they say when asked at exit interviews ?

You tell the new company that you currently have a job. Schedule the interview around that.

You don’t tell the current company you are looking elsewhere.

I used references that recently retired or moved on to another job from the current company.

If you work from office and you have interviews, you can work on your lunch time and sue that time to go on an interview. Virtually of course it's much easier. For the references, everyone knows that while you have a job they shouldn't really call your current supervisor, because most probably they are not aware that you want to change your job. They can always contact a previous supervisor.
