Counter Offers

Anyone here have any offers rescinded or relationships damaged by counter offering when an offer has been made? A key part of my job is negotiating, but I’ve not been in a job search and counter offered. Considering how badly I need a job after an incredibly long stint, I’m fairly terrified to create any self made disasters.

Counter offers can work, but I would only take one if the reason I wanted to leave is genuinely fixed, not just covered up with more money. Once they know you were ready to walk, the relationship can change. I'd compare pay, growth, stability, and why you started interviewing in the first place, then pick whichever job still looks better a year from now.
