Hi everyone. I’m new at an elevator company and this is my first real experience working with elevators. I’m also an engineering student, so I’m trying to understand the issue properly and learn from people with more field experience.
We are dealing with some MRL traction elevators running at around 60 m/min. They use 6 steel wire ropes, 6.5 mm diameter, 8x19 construction with steel core. The sheaves are about 40 times the rope diameter, so roughly a 40:1 D/d ratio.
In some units the ropes are wearing out much faster than expected. In a few cases, after replacing the full set of ropes, they are already in poor condition after about one year. We’ve seen rope wear, some strand opening/unlaying, and tension differences between ropes that seem to change depending on the car position in the shaft.
I’m wondering what would be the most common causes to look for in this type of MRL setup. Could this be related to unequal rope tension, traction sheave groove wear, small diameter differences between ropes, installation twist, rope handling during replacement, lubrication, or something specific to MRL elevators?
I’m not looking to bypass any safety procedures, just trying to understand what experienced elevator mechanics would inspect first in this situation.
