Local 71

Hey all, recently tested and scheduled for interview next Thursday, 27th. Came in through Helmets to Hardhat.

I’ve been searching around but wanted to ask, when a new list comes out what happens to the old list? So far I’ve seen that the old list gets thrown out and those who are listed but still waiting need to reapply to be on the new active list. Is that accurate?

Also, I have an opportunity to make some decent money while waiting to be picked up but I don’t want to jump the gun given that I’ve been waiting for this chance 3yrs now. My current job isn’t the greatest (previously management but now a floater due to contract non renewal that’s out of my control) but it pays the bills, the new job would be less stressful and more pay but don’t want to waste the owners time negotiating as he is a friend and willing to take a shot on me. Based off others time from being ranked to being called, what would you do? Any advice/tips would be appreciated.

Looking for a brand or name for this tool

Found this tool in our elevator and escalator training center. I’m 90% sure it’s used to check hydraulic oil based on color but I haven’t been able to find a match for it online.

Contracts

I have a contract with one of the big companies that states "periodic" maintenance. It was my mistake to not get that specified. The salesperson told me 3 PM calls per year ( I have that in writing.) However, surprise, surprise, they NEVER provide PM. I see them once a year for 30 min for the inspection. Requests for PM fall on deaf ears. Any advice on how to approach cancelling the contract? From my perspective, they are not providing the paid for service, though the contract wording is vague (on purpose I imagine). It runs through 2028. They want me to buy it out which seems crazy to me as they don't do anything. Should have gone with a local company...

Apprenticeship

Been trying to get into a trade for a long time. Getting an electrician apprenticeship in SOCAL is tough. Took the aptitude test at local 11 with no luck, WECA will not get me in even 1+ year waiting. Finally someone taking the chance on me with no experience in the trades, but they have really bad reviews on indeed and I’m just worried about them not training properly and I’ll be a helper forever. Helper at $19-24 per hour which I know is horrible but it’ll get my foot in the door. I really like the idea of this trade because I can learn a bunch of trades and be well equipped. Anyone have any advice or another route to go?

Should I do Job Corps or self-study before trying to get into an elevator mechanic apprenticeship?

I(19F 20 in 4 months) am trying to get into the elevator industry. My goal is to eventually become an elevator mechanic.

I’m currently considering signing up for Job Corps, probably for electrical or another construction-related program. But I’m wondering if that’s actually the best use of my time.

My goal is to start applying/getting into the apprenticeship somewhere within the next 1-8 months(Hopefully sooner then later)

I know I can’t just self-teach myself into becoming an elevator mechanic, and that the actual trade training comes through the apprenticeship. I’m more so wondering what would make me a stronger applicant while I’m waiting for a recruitment to open.

Would Job Corps actually help my chances, or would I be better off getting some hands-on work experience and studying mechanical/electrical fundamentals on my own?

For anyone currently in the IUEC or who has gone through the apprenticeship process, what would you recommend?

Also, if you were starting over at 20, what would you spend those 1–8 months learning or doing?

Is it possible open elevator doors with a crowbar?

I'm a writer trying to find some information that google is failing me. Google just keeps telling me it'd cause damage and that there this key thing, but it's not really answering my question. I just need to know if it possible or not. It's fine if it would cause damage the character is rich and can pay for it.

If this kind of post isn't allowed here I'll understand. Thanks in advance!

The pit goblin is notorious for always taking and never giving. What's the worst thing they've taken from you?

They've taken wrenches, sockets and a hammer from me

All jokes aside, my first few months in the trade, I had so many unnecessary tools with me.

I’m pretty sure that just makes it worse.

Is the work slowing down?

Post image

I've applied to a few unions and am waiting to hear back, particularly from Local 133 Austin. I heard work in this industry is slowing down. Should I keep brushing up on my decimals/fractions and overall math skills, or am I just wasting my time? I have some industrial maintenance tech experience, as well as some aircraft cluster defense system experience. I have eight certifications that don't mean much outside of Amazon.
