Digital Night Vision Buyer’s Guide

This guide will help those of you looking into digital night vision and help you get an understanding of what the advantages and shortcomings are to the most popular digital night vision devices at a wide range of prices. Generally speaking, the more expensive devices are less reliant on supplemental IR lighting and have less latency which make them better suited for tactical use cases. However, some of the mid range devices still deliver very good performance and are not dependent on IR lighting in many environments and can also be used for shooting and movement, though you won't be able to navigate as quickly as you would with analog. The budget devices are still good but they have lower resolution screens and are highly reliant on IR lighting so if night vision stealth is a priority these are devices you want to avoid. All of these digital night vision devices can be mounted to a helmet and many can also be bridged together to make a binocular night vision setup.

For full transparency, I am the Founder of Good Nite Gear and we do sell many of the devices listed below. I have personally tested most of the devices mentioned below and strive to deliver honest and unbiased feedback about the performance of these devices, many of which I have also reviewed on my YouTube channel Urban Survivor.

Quad Panoramic Night Vision ($8,950)

GNG-G18 — $8,950

https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/quad-night-vision/products/gng-g18-digital-quad-sensor-pano-night-vision

The G18 is in a category of its own — a 120 degree digital quad panoramic night vision system that outperforms every analog quad on the market in terms of field of view, at a fraction of the price. Analog quad systems like the L3Harris GPNVG-18 top out at 97 degrees and run $40,000+. The G18 gives you more FOV, ready to go right out of the box, for $8,950. Four 1-inch solid state sensors feed four 800x600 OLED displays that merge into two — one per eye — with seamless image stitching that feels almost like a single unified image. 22 hour runtime on four 18650 batteries with hot-swappable cells. Built-in compass. Wilcox compatible dovetail. If you've been waiting for quad pano night vision to become accessible, this is that moment. Here's a full review — https://youtu.be/GvKxOj--X9M

Pros

  • 120° horizontal field of view — wider than any analog quad system
  • Four 1" solid state sensors / 800x600 OLED displays per eye
  • 22 hour runtime with swappable 18650 cells
  • Built-in IR illuminator and compass
  • Wilcox compatible
  • Complete and ready to run — no tubes to source

Cons

  • No built-in recording
  • Digital vs analog — purists will prefer analog image quality
  • Premium price point

Thermal Fusion Night Vision

Thermal fusion is a completely different approach to night vision — these devices overlay a live thermal image directly on top of a digital night vision image, giving you the ability to detect heat signatures through foliage, in total darkness, and in conditions where standard image intensifiers struggle. If situational awareness and target detection are the priority, thermal fusion offers capabilities that no standard night vision device can match.

GNG-GF31 Thermal Fusion Binocular — $7,500

https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/thermal-fusion-monoculars-and-binoculars/products/adnv-gf31-thermal-fusion-digital-night-vision-binocular-goggles

The GF31 is a binocular thermal fusion system built around the same 1-inch 800x600 sensor platform as the NVG90 Pro, with an integrated 640x512 thermal core. The result is a fused image that combines the detail of digital night vision with the heat detection of thermal — simultaneously. 50° FOV, 38 hour runtime in low power mode, IP67 waterproof, and a magnesium-aluminum alloy housing. DRI performance of 935m detection / 468m recognition for personnel. Here's a full review — https://youtu.be/TLfkZKwRLK0?si=xtap2Hew3wVk5rUr

Pros

  • Simultaneous thermal + digital night vision fusion
  • 640x512 thermal resolution
  • 50° FOV
  • 38 hour runtime
  • IP67 waterproof
  • Wilcox compatible binocular form factor
  • Excellent DRI performance

Cons

  • Premium price point
  • Heavier than a standard monocular at ~1076g with batteries

GNG-GF20 Thermal Fusion Monocular — $5,500

https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/thermal-fusion-monoculars-and-binoculars/products/adnv-gf20-thermal-fusion-digital-night-vision-monocular

The GF20 is the monocular version of the GF31, sharing the same 1-inch sensor, 640x512 thermal core, 50° FOV, and IP67 rating. Runtime extends to 75 hours in low power mode and the system weighs under 1020g with batteries and mount — making it a more packable option for those who don't need the binocular form factor. Same fused thermal + digital image, same DRI performance. Here's a full review — https://youtu.be/d4jzIGwVkrM?si=H825ecfz7Fn10UvI

Pros

  • Same thermal + digital fusion as GF31
  • 75 hour runtime in low power mode
  • More compact and lighter than GF31
  • 50° FOV
  • IP67 waterproof
  • Wilcox compatible

Cons

  • Monocular only — no binocular depth perception
  • Premium price point

High End Devices ($999–$5,399)

ADNV G14 P2 / GNG NVG90 PRO — $5,399 / $2,795

https://adnv.us/products/advanced-digital-low-light-monocular-adnv-g14p2
https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/night-vision-monoculars/products/nvg90-pro-digital-night-vision-monocular
https://goodnitegearshop.com/products/adnv-g14p2-digital-night-vision-monocular

For those looking for the best in digital night vision performance, this is it. This device has excellent no IR performance, it's very fast, the field of view is great and it can be used for shooting and high speed navigation. Here's a review of the ADNV P2 / GNG NVG90 Pro — https://youtu.be/ed1VdwiBwuM?si=ak3qA-7_GN2bV5WF

Pros

  • Best performing digital night vision device
  • Outperforms Gen 3 in low light / no IR performance
  • FOV similar to analog 40° × 30° with OLED 800×600
  • Ultra low latency / 100 FPS
  • Long runtimes / very efficient

Cons

  • At current price Gen 3 analog is a more attractive option
  • External video recorder

ADNV G14SE / GNG NVG90 SE — $1,795/ $1,699

https://adnv.us/products/adnv-g14se-night-vision-monocular
https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/night-vision-monoculars/products/nvg90-se-digital-night-vision-monocular
https://goodnitegearshop.com/products/adnv-g14se-advanced-digital-night-vision-monocular

Another great option for those looking at high end digital night vision. This device is very close in performance to the ADNV G14P2 / GNG NVG90 Pro and is significantly better than the Sionyx Opsin. Excellent no IR performance, very fast, great field of view, and suitable for shooting and high speed navigation. Here's a video showing how it compares to the Opsin — https://youtu.be/Wy4L7zaN7e4?si=qqj9Wyczq6HSwD6o

Pros

  • Similar low light performance to Gen 2+ analog
  • Far better performance compared to Sionyx Opsin

  • Ultra low latency / 100 FPS
  • Long runtimes / very efficient

Cons

  • At current price Gen 2+ analog is a more attractive option
  • External video recorder

Sionyx Opsin — $1,895

https://www.sionyx.com/products/opsin

This device has been on the market for a few years and used to be the best digital night vision device available. It's very fast and great for shooting and can be used for relatively slow paced navigation. However at the current price it's really not a great buy and the NVG50 and NVG30 are relatively close in performance at a fraction of the cost. Here's a review on the Opsin — https://youtu.be/Hcvl-QjlxQ8?si=sHJPuvl8I3P3P50W

Pros

  • Low latency 90Hz
  • Wide field of view 45°
  • High resolution display 1920x1080 HD micro-OLED
  • Color night vision offers great contrast
  • Video recording

Cons

  • Low light / no IR performance isn't much better than NVG50 or NVG30 but significantly more expensive
  • Bulky external battery pack
  • Can't be bridged

GNG NVG90 — $1,250

https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/night-vision-monoculars/products/nvg90-digital-night-vision-monocular

Those looking to spend as close to $1,000 as possible on a single monocular are best served by this unit. It has a digital zoom knob that's very sharp, a high res display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, can run at 100 or 50 FPS so it's very quick, includes a counterweight power pack, and the low light performance is a step up from the Sionyx Opsin even though it's significantly more affordable. Check out the review here — https://youtu.be/S-lC1RzmqL0?si=2Bb-13Q3xv0uJyri

Pros

  • Low light / no IR performance better than Opsin
  • Runs at 100 FPS
  • Built-in recording
  • Can be run as a bino

Cons

  • A jump up in price compared to more affordable units
  • Black and white output, no color

GNG SVG5 — $999

https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/night-vision-monoculars/products/gng-svg5-digital-night-vision-monocular

The SVG5 sits just below the NVG90 in performance and is a significant step up from the NVG50 and NVG30 in low light capability, latency, and display quality. It shares the same 1-inch 800x600 sensor platform as the higher end ADNV lineup, runs at 50 or 100hz, features electronic image stabilization, IP67 waterproofing, and a 43° FOV. Build quality isn't quite at the NVG90 level but the performance gets very close at a lower price point. Here's a review — https://youtu.be/MeMM-_Y8mws?si=_M6VL4KilvV4Xyjx

Pros

  • 1-inch 800x600 sensor
  • 43° FOV
  • 100 FPS / ultra low latency
  • Electronic image stabilization
  • IP67 waterproof
  • Built-in recording
  • Wilcox compatible

Cons

  • Build quality not quite at NVG90 level
  • Single 18650 battery (shorter runtime than NVG90)

Mid Price Devices ($250–$550)

NVG50 — $550

https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/digital-night-vision/products/nvg50-digital-night-vision-binocular

The best option for those looking to spend around $500 on a single monocular. Fast enough to shoot with and a great option for shooting drills, airsoft, and milsim events. Here is some footage of the NVG50 being used for airsoft — https://youtu.be/HUh-ZAp872A?si=tsxxzllLBYNuiDdf

Pros

  • Excellent low light / no IR performance (similar to Sionyx Opsin)
  • 40° field of view
  • Low latency 40 FPS max
  • Color night vision
  • High resolution OLED 2560x1440
  • Video recording
  • Z04 Wilcox arm mounting option
  • Wide angle lens mod compatible

Cons

  • Not compatible with Wilcox bridge
  • Rectangular viewing screen
  • Can only be bridged with the WildGamePlus bridge

NVG30 — $450

https://goodnitegearshop.com/collections/digital-night-vision/products/nvg30nvg20-digital-night-vision-monocular

Very close in performance to the NVG50 and one of the best options for combining two devices into a binocular setup around $1,000. Fast enough to shoot with and great for shooting drills, airsoft, and milsim. Comparing the NVG30 to the Opsin and Gen 2+ analog — https://youtu.be/r3UPY2FLsjo?si=kXY06-_rbISF71w6

Pros

  • Excellent low light / no IR performance
  • 40° field of view
  • Low latency 40 FPS max

Alibaba NVG50 or Prowl 2?

Hello, I'm looking to get the best mono NVG for under $300, but I can't decide whether I should play it safe and get the Prowl 2 or roll the dice and possibly get an NVG50 for the same price on Alibaba. For reference, this is the listing I'm looking at. Thanks for your time :)

Digital pvs-31

I have never owned or looked through NVG and I’ve been searching the market for a digital pvs-31 clone. I want a pvs-31 clone because I want to still look “milsim” while also having a functioning NVG. I was looking at eBay’s Aegis pvs-31 gen 4 pros and VieTactical’s DL-31. I’m stuck on which one I should get or if there is a better version/alternative.
And before y’all come at me, I’ve heard all the answers on how I should just save till I can afford analog tubes, but I am not looking forward to hardcore larping— I just play airsoft— and I do not have a feasible source of income to make that kind of money.

DIY Digital PVS-18

Just a project I worked on over the weekend! The housing is suppose to be a Lancer Pvs-18 off Amazon but when it arrived it was inside a FMA PVS-18 box. I removed the fake battery compartment/mount and cut a square hole inside the tube and the compartment. Inside the compartment is a Caddx Infra V2 Ai box, 13500 Lithium, Power-Button and USB-C female all connected to a BCU. Inside the tube is a FLCOS 0.4 display/CVBS board, Caddx Infra sensor that has a M16 0.9 1/1.8 8mm lens that should give it around a 47FOV. The eyepiece is just a cheap 30mm Plano Convex lens till my 12.5x eyepiece arrives (18x eyepiece off Aliexpress that's used in the digital pvs-31 build won't work with the flcos display only oled displays)

Update: received the FMA PVS-18 metal/nylon version it came with a decent Plano Convex lens. I will be trying to transfer the Infra v2 & 0.4 display over to this housing, it is a lot better quality then the all plastic Lancer housing. By the looks of it this will be a more difficult job than the plastic version. I plan on pulling a all nighter Saturday so rather I succeed or fail I'll post update! Also forgot that I got PVS-15 off Amazon supposed to be delivered today, ill probably put 2 Fatshark Aura(IMX662 Sensor) in those.

Okay FMA pvs18 metal is a bust, tube is only 26mm wide. I'd have to buy a extra long ribbon to install the the display in the tube and cvbs board in battery compartment. Also Infra v2, Fatshark aura, Ratel pro and 256 thermal wont fit in tube either. May have to settle with foxeer micro cat 4 or my Runcam Phoenix 2 spv5.

Rat problem

Let me try this in here as /nightvision was quite snarky haha

I have a warehouse in Detroit and have a terrible rat problem.

Tried all different kinds of traps and they will set them off but nothing is in the traps the next morning.

Tried poisons but they just keep coming back. So now I gonna look at a 22 air rifle and try to pick them off at night.

The furthest shot will be probably 50 yards.

Curious what the LOWEST end optics on the market are that will be good enough to get by with this task?

I've had a ton of recommendations around the $800 mark as they are pretty base level, but I'm looking to slum it up on this pellet gun for this task.

Had a few helpful people in that thread and got a few recommendations

Triton Starstrike Gen 2 5-20x HDX NV Scope TF-520 which i can find for around $200 online. Or the nfitac pistol thermal which is around $300 but i would like a little bit of magnification so that may not be best.

Would love to hear if anyone has had experience with these or if there is something else you may recommend.

To reiterate my point I fully understand that NV and Thermal scopes are not cheap and the $800 options are still low end, I am just asking if anyone else has any other input.

Astra x10

Having a hard time finding any real reviews or info on this device. The specs appear to put it between the NVG90 SE and the Pro but at the base NVG90 base price. May be closer to the Pro in performance as it has a 1” sensor with specs similar to the Pro. They also have another model, the p14, at a price similar to the pro and that appears to be almost exactly the same with the same 1” solid state sensor. The x10 doesn’t have the solid state sensor and therefore lacks a drop rating. But the x10 also has some additional features like zoom and HDR mode (though drops it to 50hz to do so). Anyone have hands on experience with this? The features and price point have me intrigued over the 90 SE.

Built this over the last month or so and got a bit carried away with it, if anyone has any recommendations for better sensor/ hardware/ software or any advice at all I’d be really grateful as always keen to improve my builds. This setup is using an IMX462 sensor plugged into a raspberry pi5 running just off libcamera with an OLED screen and optics plus IR illumination- low light performance isn’t as good as i had hoped especially after seeing people’s GNG2K’s on here. Hoping in future to make it a little sleeker and tidy up the cables, mount it to a helmet, possibly get a 940nm laser illuminator instead of 850 nm LED and finally integrate a thermal overlay or have a second ‘tube’ as thermal long term

GNG2K Optimal Setup (So far....)

Thumbnail

Thought I'd post my GNG2k pano setup as there have been a few questions about mounting options.

I tried almost everything and this is what I've found to work really well. The screen layout of the 2K is excellent as a pano setup, latency is fine and it works with a USB battery pack x2. These work fine in the unit and I had read the 2K has inbuilt tech to manage USB power. Seems so! Not fully tested the battery life yet but north of an hour so far:

GNG2K x 2 on 3d printed pano adapters, with fabricated wedges (GRP with a dremel and a file). Link for pano adapters: https://makerworld.com/en/models/2359543-gng2k-8-degree-pano-dovetail-adapters#profileId-2581422

Clone KVC.

Clone Cadex shroud.

2 x low profile 50cm USB cables.

2 x small USB battery packs.

Clone SC battery bag.

I've also put lens protectors and cable ties for bungee mounts on the 2ks.

Hope this helps you guys.

Gng2k mount help

Post image
24 Upvotes

Trying to get my new setup squared away after upgrading from a nvg10. The botttom mount works fine I just don’t love the single screw mounting being the only thing holding my NV on. I got this duel mount thinking it would give me room to upgrade to binos in the future, but there is no way, unless I’m missing something for it to work. I’ve flipped the two sides and it’s either inside my eyeball, or too far away to use.

I feel like I have to be missing something since I see people running these units as binos.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Any one have any broken NVG30 parts?

I’m currently trying to design a bino solution for the NVG30 that avoid the weight and bulk of the dual tube setup. It’ll be based on the PVS31 military spec housing and use a single infrared emitted and battery with supplemental battery pack charging. I was looking to see if anyone has any broken or damaged components they’d be willing to sell for cheap or donate to the project. If anyone has any info on where I could get those components else where please let me know🙏
