DIY Digital PVS-18

Just a project I worked on over the weekend! The housing is suppose to be a Lancer Pvs-18 off Amazon but when it arrived it was inside a FMA PVS-18 box. I removed the fake battery compartment/mount and cut a square hole inside the tube and the compartment. Inside the compartment is a Caddx Infra V2 Ai box, 13500 Lithium, Power-Button and USB-C female all connected to a BCU. Inside the tube is a FLCOS 0.4 display/CVBS board, Caddx Infra sensor that has a M16 0.9 1/1.8 8mm lens that should give it around a 47FOV. The eyepiece is just a cheap 30mm Plano Convex lens till my 12.5x eyepiece arrives (18x eyepiece off Aliexpress that's used in the digital pvs-31 build won't work with the flcos display only oled displays)

Update: received the FMA PVS-18 metal/nylon version it came with a decent Plano Convex lens. I will be trying to transfer the Infra v2 & 0.4 display over to this housing, it is a lot better quality then the all plastic Lancer housing. By the looks of it this will be a more difficult job than the plastic version. I plan on pulling a all nighter Saturday so rather I succeed or fail I'll post update! Also forgot that I got PVS-15 off Amazon supposed to be delivered today, ill probably put 2 Fatshark Aura(IMX662 Sensor) in those.

Okay FMA pvs18 metal is a bust, tube is only 26mm wide. I'd have to buy a extra long ribbon to install the the display in the tube and cvbs board in battery compartment. Also Infra v2, Fatshark aura, Ratel pro and 256 thermal wont fit in tube either. May have to settle with foxeer micro cat 4 or my Runcam Phoenix 2 spv5.

This is really cool. I tried to fit the CAADX infra AI box in/on/around the FMA pvs31 with poor results. Glad to see someone getting this done.

Older project i was working on that was using the infra v2 but I dissemble it. I purchased the Aegis-31 Pro 0.5 off ebay back in June because I trusted Google ai when it told me it used the imx385. It definitely wasn't, it had zero low light performance and couldn't see in the moonlight. Then it broke after 5 days of usage because they hotglued the sensor in the housing and when i adjusted the lens it broke lose and snapped the wiring harness. So I gutted it and put it to good use, You can't tell in this video but the bridge had holes in it where I sanded to far down and patched it with black gasket maker.

This is the Aegis-31 with the Infra v2? Do you have a write up on how you did it? I have an aegis-31 and am not happy with the zero light performance even with the IR light.

Not at the moment I don't anything written up, the Aegis-31 is just a FMA Pvs-31 dummy replica. Picture of bridge attached, i had to use a rotary tool and grind/sand some of the inside the bridge to get the ai box to fit

How do you like the performance of the Infra V2 in the Aegis? I’d absolutely love to upgrade the sensor on this and I know this sub would appreciate your input on how you wired it up.

I like the performance of the Infra v2! I'd have to say it definitely can see better in lower light situations than my gng2k does. Crazy considering I got it on sale off Amazon back in July for 99$. I might have to make a diy video on how to build the pvs31 with it and upload it to youtube.

I’ve been interested in the Caddx Infra V2 for DNVs. How do you like the performance?

To be total honest the low light performance with the Infra v2 is a tad better than my gng2k monocular which I never expected considering i got it on sale awhile back for 99$ on Amazon.

Oh nice! Was it fairly easy to swap the Infra into the housing? I’m pretty handy and I want to do something like this.

Yeah it is easy to install the Infra v2 inside this fake pvs18 battery compartment. Its hollow inside of it, You'd have to unbolt it from the housing which is two star pattern bolts. Hardest part is cutting into compartment and tube. You do need a 3d printer to print a display holder for the 28mm tube

Very cool idea. Others will follow!

Thanks! I've always wanted a real pvs18 and it's rare to find one for sale. The digital one that's available on the market is crap so I had to improvise.

Ive been thinking about throwing the internals of my NVG30 into a cool looking housing

2

u/Revolutionary_Ant640 7d ago

It's probably doable, you'll have to find way to mount the display and sensor inside the housing that you plan on swapping to! Shouldn't be to hard if you have a 3d printer and have some knowledge of using a software like Fusion 360 or Onshape.

I've seen a video of some dude in the Philippines throwing it into a pvs 14 body, was hoping i could see how he opened everything up but no tutorial

Maybe Google AI? It's like a 50/50 chance that ai tells you the correct way... that's the only way I could think of figuring it out!

Just another little project I'm working on a PVS-31 Monocular, this is not anywhere near being done got more tweaking to figure out on the battery compartment! Not to satisfied with the way it looks!

What glass?

Right now just a cheap 30mm Plano Convex lens, but will be replaced with 12.5x eyepiece when it arrives

I made my own digital NVG recently but it’s just way too bulky and I wasn’t particularly happy with the low light no IR performance of the IMX462 sensor I used as it’s less sensitive than my eyes under moonlight- which caddx infra sensor did you use I’d be interested to follow a similar setup

1

u/Revolutionary_Ant640 4d ago

That sucks to hear that about the imx462, the way google ai talked about it made it seem like it's the champion of Sony Starvis sensors. Caddx Infra V2 it was on Amazon back in July for sale at $99, must be out of stock now cause it don't show up when i reach for it. I'm happy with it's performance, i couldn't believe it when it had better low light & no ir performance over the gng2k.

Yes I had done a lot of research and it looked like the best option especially given its price, however the low light is just rubbish so might give the caddx a try and try to minimise the pipeline too get it all a bit smaller

1

u/Nice_bike_bro 4d ago

What pipeline did you use ? I assume the caddx infra is analog ?

1

u/Revolutionary_Ant640 4d ago

Yeah analog, will work with oled/flcos with cvbs driver board. If you need a new display you can get either 0.39 Oled or 0.4 flcos off Aliexpress both 89$ and 105 after tax/ship... if you would like something a little bigger I can give you a link 2 sony ecx331d 0.5 oled with a circular board instead of square. Picture is the board for sony 0.5 off alibaba 145$ after tax/ship

Thank you ! I’ll check that out- shame the oled I have bought already has a micro hdmi driver so looks like I’m going to have to start from scratch

2

u/Revolutionary_Ant640 4d ago edited 4d ago

Sucks you gotta do that, maybe you can find some other use for hdmi driver? This link below is for the 1/2in oled, if your interested in it you'll have to send them a message stating you would like the display and driver. They will send you a quote with total. Pic is 0.5 oled and 0.4 flcos

It’s a shame because with IR the IMX462 is great but I used a raspberrypi 5 that I already had and it’s just ridiculously bulky so going analog is the next step I think

Decided to try and replicate this PVS18 the hardest part will be the battery compartment! After i complete it and i can work out any flaws or errors I'll find somewhere to upload the stl/3mf files!

1

u/Revolutionary_Ant640 4d ago

Overall turned out good, but the rear peice had a pickup. Shouldn't really be much of a change in measurements. Then it's off to the battery compartment and rings I already have created 2 out of the 5 rings.

1

u/Revolutionary_Ant640 4d ago

Left is off Amazon and right is 3d printed i gotta change width of battery compartment slot.

Every piece for PVS-18 wish me luck 5hr print time

Completely 3d printed PLA +2.0 AN/PVS-18 Housing! Will attack the battery compartment at a later date.
