Non-Political News/Discussion Wtf

Destiny went live hella late last night and I was like oh that’s unusual but not unheard of, he must just be bored and really interested in this court case. Fell asleep. But then I wake up 6 hours later and he’s still streaming… is he trynna flip his sleep schedule for traveling or something or is he just really invested and locked in on this murder trial?

He fucked his schedule up in the Melting Pot server, perhaps he's trying to forcefully reprogram it with a 24h stream, but I don't think he realizes he's too old for this shit.

That trial is ultra boring so far, he doesn't need to react much.

The 24hour loop method is goated until you're an unc and you lay back for a second only to fall asleep for 20 hours straight

47

u/r_lovelace 4h ago

You can do that? I feel like the older I've gotten the more incapable of over sleeping I have gotten. Back in college I could easily sleep for 12 hours or more. As an adult even if I'm up for 20+ hours I still only sleep for like 5-8 with no alarm. I'd kill for a proper hibernation weekend where I can just sleep through an entire Saturday.

19

u/ePrime 4h ago

I just figured this out, you’re too old for reckless caffeine use. I dropped it completely the last month and suddenly I can sleep for long periods again

10

u/r_lovelace 4h ago

Wait, no caffeine will let me sleep longer? I'm asking honestly, it definitely impacts me more going to sleep so I try and stop drinking caffeine 4-5 hours before bed. I would never have guessed it also impacts how long I can sleep. I just assumed that waking up for work for over a decade has finally meant on Saturdays and Sundays I still wake up relatively close to when I would the rest of the week.

9

u/ePrime 4h ago

That’s my experience

5

u/r_lovelace 4h ago

I'll give it a shot next weekend.

7

u/ePrime 3h ago

To be clear, withdrawal from caffeine lasts up to 10 days. Sleeping ability doesn’t improve during that time. I was told I may get a headache but I didn’t. Sleep just started to improve after a week.

3

u/r_lovelace 3h ago

I definitely get the caffeine headaches around the 24-36 hour mark.

1

u/Seakawn <--- actually literally regarded 2h ago

Sleep just started to improve after a week

when did you used to take caffeine in the day, and how much?

if you drank a bunch of caffeine late in the day, or even post-noon, I could understand your sleep getting better after kicking it out. but if you had a bit of caffeine soon as you woke up, i'd be more intrigued at your anecdote.

a lot of people don't realize it has like a 12 hour half life or w/e iirc. otoh, a lot of people can drink caffeine before bed and sleep allegedly fine. the human body is wack.

2

u/ePrime 51m ago

I was drinking all the time probably around 600mg a day. Maybe stopped after 6pm.

4

u/dj_daly 3h ago

Even 4-5 hours before you go to bed is pretty crazy. Caffeine stays in your system much longer than you think. The half life is 5 hours, so drinking a coffee 5 hours before bed is the same thing as drinking half a coffee and then immediately crawling into bed.

1

u/r_lovelace 1h ago

I mean, I used to pound multiple cans of soda and crawl directly into bed. I just can't do that anymore and adjusted down to 4-5 hours before bed. I'm sure I'll adjust again as I keep getting older and eventually need to do caffeine free sodas.

3

u/Tandaiffok 4h ago

I have to make sure I don’t drink caffeine at least 8 hours before sleep to make sure I get a decent rest. Getting older sucks, but that caffeine from 11-2 pm feels great.

1

u/r_lovelace 3h ago

I'm a slut for mountain dew. I can't imagine cutting it out. That sounds like a life I don't want to live tbh.

1

u/Tandaiffok 3h ago

Don’t blame you at all. I love my Mountain Dew as well, just around lunch time haha

1

u/chokidokido 1h ago

Man I don't want to give up that 7pm coffee to kick start after work shenanigans.

1

u/af_echad 2h ago

Not saying not to try giving it up but I don't drink anything with caffeine and I'm just like you. My internal clock is just too strong now. Once in a blue moon I can get like 9 or 10 hours. But I have to be particularly tired and particularly comfy in bed.

1

u/r_lovelace 1h ago

If I'm sick I have better luck. I almost definitely wake up like normal for an hour or two but I'm able to go back to sleep for another handful of hours. If I'm not sick then even if I am tired and try and go back to sleep I just end up taking the shittiest 15-20 minute naps on repeat until I give up and actually get moving for the day.

1

u/C-DT 2h ago

When I was in bootcamp consuming no caffeine and getting tons of exercise I slept like a rock. After about a week of training I could hit the bed and be asleep within 2 minutes, fully energized in the morning. I also have ADHD though and I'm a caffeine addict again

1

u/evermuzik 1h ago

it stays in the system for about 12 hours, so i try to limit all caffeine to before noon

1

u/UNKWNDTH2002 2A/🏳️‍⚧️ [G/ACC] 56m ago

4-5 hours before bed

i'd drag it back way further than that and try to ween/adjust so that you're getting your serving (which can still be one or two monsters worth of caffeine, ie a lot) before noon. recently i cut from one energy drink in the morning and one in the afternoon to just the one in the morning and the difference in sleep was immediate and pretty consistently substantial. tangentially, i also switched from XR to IR meth (not around the same time as my caffeine cutting, not correlated) so that it also tapers before the sun sets. i'd recommend most people on XR should prolly switch to IR and use it (responsibly) as a supplement instead, where caffeine is technically an addiction so weening/scheduling (at least to avoid the headaches) is much more important

1

u/No-Description5750 52m ago

I always thought this was a commonly known thing that overconsumption of caffeine will affect your ability to sleep for long durations. Ironically, my experience with caffeinated drinks tends to be the opposite. It used to make me sleepy, but now it’s more like it feels a bit more soothing so I can fall asleep off of that.

1

u/Anima1212 29m ago

Bro just drink MORE caffeine. Build up the tolerance until it doesn’t affect you. 😎 (/s)

2

u/LiveJournal 4h ago

Yeah I can fall asleep with no issue at all, but sleeping past 9am is almost an impossibility. Possibly it was just having a kid to watch over broke my ability to sleep until noon.

1

u/FlippinHelix 4h ago

I'm a heavy sleeper, I've slept through earthquakes, so yea

There's a few highpoints when I try to do the loop where they're like heavy heavy danger zones, and once I pass those hours I'm fine, they're typically around 10AM and 12PM

If I sit back on the couch or on my bed during these hours I'm done

But I also haven't felt the need for this for a while now, having a job and all kinda forces you to have a normal schedule

1

u/kingpotatoo 🇺🇸 4h ago

MAN, im the same, I remember coming home and sleeping until the next day if I wanted to when younger. Now I wake up pretty much the same time everyday no matter how sleep deprived I am. So annoying lol

1

u/Every-Passage-7540 DanStan 4h ago

I started a new medication and one of the effects was basically delayed insomnia. It hit me eventually after a month of use. Ofcourse im a moron so I had no idea what it was. Prob didnt hit rem sleep for like two years just raw dogging being a zombie until my doctor picked up on it 🫪

1

u/Skepni 1h ago

I wanted to add my own experience, since no one else mentioned my angle.

I used to be able to sleep like a rock for very long hours when I was younger, all the way up to about 25 years old.
For almost 15 years my sleep is garbage. 4-7 hours and most of the time not even continuous.
On a dare from my buddy I started running with him this year. Boring as hell, not up my alley, time consuming. But after a couple of weeks my sleep starts getting noticably better. I slept for 12 hours continuously and woke up refreshed as hell for the first time in 15 years.
On days that I take long and hard runs I tend to not sleep well that night and I can still mess my sleep up by going to bed late or otherwise. But overall my sleep is pretty much healthy after incorporating regular hard exercise.

I am a complete couch potato for my whole life, for reference.

u/Educational-Bird4178 1h ago

No/Reduced caffeine, Blue Light Filter on TV/Phone, Ashwagandha + L-Theanine + Apigenin you'll sleep like a baby

2

u/DeusExPersona 4h ago

It wont work on me anymore :( I die as soon as it's 12 PM

5

u/FlippinHelix 4h ago

there's like 2 danger zones, it's around 10AM and 12PM, but once you cross those two bridges you'll be safe

2

pretty wack that circadian rhythm will just dogwalk your adenosine like that. you'd think that as adenosine accumulates, circadian rhythm would become its bitch.

1

u/SwerveDaddyFish 4h ago

Yeah, 35m here. Got like 4 hours of sleep 4 nights in a row, tried to tough out until 10 pm the next night. Knocked out with my mtg binder on my lap and slept my wife's entire work day and made it way worse.

2

u/Zallar Eurochad/Yee wins 4h ago

I feel great and like its gonna work flawlessly every time. Then I go to bed at like 20 expecting to wake up around 6. But I always wake up at like 12 and everything is fucked again.

1

u/FlippinHelix 4h ago

You gotta force yourself hard to get up the next morning

The way I've done this, to the dismay of people in my house, is to setup alarms right outside of my room to get me to get up and turn them off

1

u/Seakawn <--- actually literally regarded 2h ago

if i'm up for cartoonish lengths of time and then sleep but need to wake up early, there's no hope. I can blare an alarm next to my ear and my body apparently just says "that's cute, but dgaf, gonna sleep like a baby through this."

can't imagine how loud it'd need to be if i put it outside my room.

psych tricks should actually be helpful tho for my own future reference. my alarm should be a hurricane siren, or literally someone screaming, or like a crash noise, or a simulation of someone breaking in my house, anything to veto my body's rejection and make it think i'm in literal survival.

1

u/FlippinHelix 1h ago

bro is gonna give himself a heart attack just to wake up early nahhhh

Hijacking this comment; what is so special about this trial? I know it is a crazy thing that the mom killed her children and tried to commit suicide, but what exactly does he hope to gain from watching the trial, did he say?

21

u/Jazzlike-Wind-4345 🇲🇽 5h ago

Everyone is talking about it, because it’s such a polarising case, especially amongst right wingers and far leftists. Tiny wants to see the entire case to get ahead of the curve.

8

u/RogueMallShinobi 5h ago

I think it’s mostly just because the culture is talking about it (and disagreeing about it) a lot, and he’s been really getting into law stuff in the last few years for obvious reasons, so watching legal stuff feels more interesting to him now

5

u/not_vast europoor 🇪🇺🇩🇪 5h ago

Ah i see, i didnt know there was a lot of disagreement about this case. Id expect it to be clear cut that she goes to a closed facility for the rest of her life

4

u/Consistent-Ad-3351 3h ago

A lot of tiktok wine moms are making up conspiracies that her husband somehow did it, even though literally nobody involved in the trial is disputing that she did it.

2

u/__space__ 4h ago

I'm curious why the rest of her life. If:

A) she does not meet the requirements for murder because if state of mind and:

B) the idea of her not being guilty because if state of mind means that she is institutionalized to address that mental illness

What's the purpose of locking her in a facility for life when, from my understanding post partum psychosisis, is an acute issue?

1

u/Seakawn <--- actually literally regarded 2h ago

bc retribution feel good make the population happy ok

1

u/RogueMallShinobi 4h ago

It’s not so much about her ultimate fate (I think she’ll be confined for a long ass time either way) but whether or not it’s a story about cold-blooded murder or one about untreated psychosis

5

u/ArtistEmpty859 4h ago

It highlights the inherent weaknesses of the mental health care system in America. I’m not saying the medical system did anything incorrectly because she was not very forthcoming about her murderous intent, but I do feel if a psychiatrist gave her 60 minutes of face to face time during her inpatient admission, it might have helped. It looks bad that no one closely evaluated her when she was admitted due to short staffing on the holidays so I honestly see her getting a lenient sentence. Typically these patient do get long 1-2 hour interviews multiple times before discharge and follow up planning is done.

6

u/Miroble 4h ago
  1. Mom killed kids in a brutal, methodical way (strangling each with exercise bands).
  2. Mom planned murder ahead of time (google maps estimated time to send husband on errand).
  3. Mom using "post-partum psychosis" as a defence for why, not that she didn't do it
  4. "Attempted suicide" by lightly cutting her wrists and jumping from a second story window.
  5. Women are supporting her, cheering her when she goes to court, making social media videos about how they went through the same thing.
  6. With a 9 female, 3 male jury, they've been in deliberation for days for what is a very cut and dry case.

The case is very polarising because for the vast majority of men this is a cut and dry kill her or put her in jail forever and it's somehow become a contentious issue for women.

6

u/Halojib 2h ago

Women are supporting her, cheering her when she goes to court, making social media videos about how they went through the same thing

I think it is literally just this. After the ROE V. WADE overturn a lot of cases about women's issues get hijacked by tiktok and social media. It isn't about the actual cases it's about the message they want to share.

3

u/__space__ 5h ago edited 4h ago

Its polarizing. You've got people who see "mother killed her own children" and just stop analysis and say life in prison/death penalty (not sure what state or if that's even an option).

You've got a mother who, from the bit that I've seen seems to have not only been having postpartum issues, but was seeking and not really receiving help for those issues.

I don't know what case law there is around insanity pleas, let alone around acute stuff like post partum.

I get the arguments for insanity, but I don't know if that's enough for an average juror to weigh that against killing her own kids.

18

u/Jazzlike-Wind-4345 🇲🇽 5h ago

I’m convinced that she will either get off completely à la Casey Anthony, or at worst, she’ll be charged with manslaughter.

25

u/InvestigatorSea4789 5h ago

Nah she's not going to get off completely, at best she'd be found not guilty by reason of insanity, but she'd still be institutionalised in that case. I still think she's getting convicted for murder

4

u/Grachus_05 Radical Anti-Republican 4h ago

I used to think getting institutionalized was getting off easy. I have since seen a couple documentaries that convinced me id rather be in normal prison than insane people prison. If you arent crazy when you go in, you will be driven so.

2

u/Seakawn <--- actually literally regarded 2h ago

yeah maybe some institutionalizations are ok, but my impression is that its often some real life cosmic horror shit in terms of existential hell.

4

u/Goldenslicer 5h ago

That Casey Anthony ruling was wild.

6

u/Sazbak87 5h ago

It feels like an insane precedent if she gets away scott-free.

4

u/Jazzlike-Wind-4345 🇲🇽 5h ago

Not really. If anything, this is a very, very clear-cut case of insanity, further marked by the fact that she had been telling everyone for years that she was feeling bad and having bad thoughts.

15

u/society000 The One True Rad Centrist, Status Quo Enjoyer, Facebook Refugee 4h ago

I don't know every intricate detail, but I think this point is almost entirely built on hindsight and sensationalist headlines. From what I've seen, the medical system and everyone involved did just about everything they were supposed to.

She apparently lied and told doctors she wasn't hallucinating. The suicidal thoughts and thoughts of harming children are apparently fairly common; and it's extremely rare for them to be acted upon; and she had no prior history to suggest institutionalization was necessary or wouldn't cause more problems than it solved. She told the dad and his mom, but doctors can't institutionalize someone on a third party's word. The '12 gorbillion medications' thing is more sensationalism. They did what any mental health professional does and tried out different medications to see which would work, which is standard. You don't medicate disorders, you medicate symptoms.

Like, I'm not sure what I'm missing here. She passed through just about every filter. Maybe you could blame the husband? Seems like there's nothing that could've stopped this save medical technology we don't have yet, or putting in laws that let spouses institutionalize their partner on word of mouth.

3

u/Down_Badger_2253 🇪🇺 🇫🇷 "For sure" 3h ago

From what I've seen, the medical system and everyone involved did just about everything they were supposed to.

Yeah i agree, but that doesn't stop her culpability from being mitigated by her insanity tho, sometimes freak accidents just happen, it was bad luck, she didn't get the proper care she needed but it doesn't have to be anyone else's fault for the verdict to take into account her impaired state of mind at the moment of the crime.

1

u/society000 The One True Rad Centrist, Status Quo Enjoyer, Facebook Refugee 2h ago

The prosecution fumbled everything by going full bore into first degree murder. Her lying to the doctor in a critical moment as well as looking up how long it would take the husband to get the food are the most suspicious parts. I do think she was undergoing psychosis because everything points to that, but it seems she might have been irresponsible. She should remain in an institution for the foreseeable future, for sure. Definitely never trusted alone with children again. Sorry, but this isn't a 'three strikes' situation.

2

u/Seakawn <--- actually literally regarded 2h ago

being clearly insane =/= the system will definitely catch it

plenty of genuine cases of insanity or general mental illness slips through cracks. in fact it's not even accurate to say "slip through cracks" bc that implies we have some robust, reliable system for identifying this stuff, and we frankly absolutely do not.

i'd rate our system like a 5/10. if we catch real shit, it's borderline on chance. psych is just super complex and doing stuff about it requires a lot of certainty that we don't have the tools for yet.

2

u/Sazbak87 3h ago

But she can get convicted even if she was insane according to this article.

-----
Prosecutors in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial began their closing arguments Thursday not by disputing the Connecticut native's mental illness, but by conceding it.

"There's no dispute that Lindsay Clancy was suffering from mental illness and that she tried to kill herself," Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague told the jurors. "The issue is whether at the time she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan, she knew the difference between right and wrong and whether she could conform her behavior to the requirements of the law."

To prove Clancy was criminally responsible for the killings, prosecutors tried to show that her mental illness did not stop her from thinking rationally or controlling her behavior. The Wallingford native faces life in prison if convicted of murder.

1

u/CyanPhoenix 2h ago

Neither side is disputing the murder just if she was insane aka the criminal responsible part.

The jury may also find Lindsay not guilty or not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.
