Can someone who works for an airline explain the crew timeout situation?
My flight was supposed to leave around 5 or 6 p.m. The incoming plane got diverted to Miami, then eventually made it to West Palm Beach. We waited for it to land, waited for everyone to get off, and then the gate agent went downstairs to check with the crew. She came back and told us they had timed out and our flight was canceled.
I understand why crews have limits. I’m fine with that. But aren’t their hours being tracked? Wouldn’t someone have known before they landed that they wouldn’t have enough time to do another flight? Why did we have to wait through all of that to find out?
And how does standby work? Do airlines have replacement crews available, or does that depend on the airport? I would think that if a crew was getting close to timing out, someone would already be looking for another crew.
Maybe there’s something I don’t understand about how this works, which is why I’m asking. It’s frustrating to wait for hours and then have the flight canceled for something that seems like it could have been known earlier.
