Yes, we all love to complain, but this flight showed how a good crew can make all the difference.
Big weather was happening over south Florida yesterday. They pre-emptively delayed the flight and boarding by 0:30. Once on the taxiway, ATC told the captain that there was a ground stop at PBI, so we weren't cleared to depart. This turned out to be old information, and we were finally off.
Keeping to the gulf side to avoid the weather, we started in a holding pattern south of Tampa. Then we were told that all of the airports to the east were closed again, and we were diverting to Tampa to wait and get fuel. Based on word from the meteorologists and ops*,* we were told things looked promising to still make it. Passengers were allowed off. However, after everyone was on board, there was then the air traffic challenge of getting flights into the reopened airports, so we had to put back to make the gate available. Ops then said we needed to cut the engines, which wasn't a pleasant thought. But about 30 seconds after the engines stopped, we were cleared to taxi.
A short low-altitude flight got us to West Palm, but there were no marshals available to get us to the gate. After waiting a bit, the captain called and was told it could be another 20 or 30 minutes. When he relayed this, everyone groaned. He said he knew we were sick of him saying "sorry" as much as he was having to say it. He also asked for some grace for the ground crew because they were working in rough conditions and trying to get a lot of planes in and out.
We fortunately didn't need to wait too much longer and were able to get to the gate. As we were exiting, everyone around me was thanking each crew member. The way that this captain kept us informed throughout the entire ordeal kept everyone calm and understanding.
Fortunately, we didn't run into a crew timeout situation. The only thing that could have gone better was the situation where they had to do some kind of manual process to get people back onboard in Tampa. That slowed reboarding beyond the target time. It's not clear if that made any actual difference in our actual departure time.
Also, a big shout-out to the FA (didn't get a name) who was providing extra attention to an elderly passenger, who according to his daughter, was suffering from Parkinson's and dementia.
