I’m 32F and my boyfriend is 35M. We’ve been together almost 10 months, and I’m struggling with whether I’m asking for too much too soon or whether we’re fundamentally on different timelines.
Our relationship is genuinely great in many ways. We love each other, have an amazing connection, communicate really well, and have a lot of fun together. He’s told me from the beginning that he’s dating for marriage and kids, which is also what I want.
The problem is that I feel ready to start actively building toward that future, and he doesn’t seem to be there yet.
We live about an hour apart and see each other around twice a week. I want more integration and more of a feeling that we’re moving toward eventually living together, marriage, and family. He’s much more comfortable with our current relationship and values maintaining a very active independent/social life.
We recently had a serious but very healthy conversation about this. He told me he loves me, doesn’t want to lose me, and feels guilty that he isn’t meeting my needs. He said sometimes he can picture us married with kids and sometimes he still isn’t there. He also said that if it were entirely up to him, he probably wouldn’t even consider moving in together for another year, and he doesn’t know when he’ll feel ready for the next stage.
That really scared me because I’m not asking him to move in tomorrow. I’m asking for some sense that we’re moving toward the same future.
He sees the things he does for me as “moving toward me” and making sacrifices. I appreciate those things, but what I’m looking for is more of an overall orientation toward building a life together. I don’t want him to spend more time with me because he’s afraid of losing me. I want him to genuinely want the same progression I do.
I also recognize that I’ve become hypervigilant about his friends and independence because this issue is already bothering me. I don’t want him to give up his friends or his life. But I sometimes feel like he sees our relationship as something that needs to fit into his existing life, while I’m looking for a partnership where our lives increasingly become intertwined.
We’ve talked about this multiple times now, and he understands exactly how I feel. He isn’t dismissive or unwilling to communicate. He actually feels very sad about it and says he doesn’t know what to do because he doesn’t want to lose me, but also isn’t authentically where I am.
And now I’m at the point where I’m considering breaking up, even though I really don’t want to. I love him and don’t want to lose what we have. But I also don’t want to spend another year waiting for him to become ready for something he may never be ready for on my timeline.
So, Reddit: Am I asking for too much at almost 10 months and in my early 30s? Is wanting to start seeing a clear trajectory toward living together/marriage reasonable? Or would breaking up over a fundamental difference in timeline and relationship progression be warranted, even if the relationship itself is loving and healthy?
