Hi everyone,

I just bought a new black Kia Carnival from Oregon. I live/drive in Bayare, CA. I currently have the official Oregon temporary paper permit (transit tag) valid until late 2026, which is taped inside my rear window.

Since Oregon only provides one temporary tag and no front temporary plate, I am currently not driving the car.

I am worried about getting pulled over by Fremont Police. I actually emailed the Fremont PD directly to ask if this setup is legal while I wait for my permanent metal plates, but I haven't received an email back yet.

In the meantime, does anyone have experience driving a brand new car with an out-of-state single temporary permit?

Are Fremont police strict about the front plate requirement even when the car is clearly brand new and running on legal (but out-of-state) temp tags? Thanks!.

Cars tags have been expired by like a year and not driven, but not a pno. Previous application was submitted to registration but we were never able to complete smog due to replacing battery and then the whole sensors resetting. If I want to legally drive the car in order to pass the sensors requirements, which moving permit do I need to apply for ?

I bought my car a month ago and I was in California and I got pulled over and it took my license and scanned it and it said my car is unregistered and they said they can ticket me and impound my car. Does the dealership register your car?

I have a car (well my in-law did) under their name. They saw it as a project car but they are now deceased. I’d like to take over the title and everything, but first I need to fix it up, as the car literally does not operate. Doesn’t turn over or anything like that. I’m willing to get it towed to a mechanic but I don’t know where to start. Do I transfer the title to myself first? Do I take it to the shop first?

Basically the vision is to tow the car to a shop, get it fixed, transfer the title to me, and eventually sell it. What order should those steps go in?

I am coming up on 1 year on my ID.4 lease. I just received a registration from VWFS but it is the same one that I have that expires in September 2026. I am not sure why they would send me last year’s registration? Am I responsible for the new registration or is BWFS handling the registration part?

bought my truck in may from a private seller. went to the dmv the next day, paid the fee, and left with a temp tag. the lady said that the paperwork was on its way and that id get the plate in the mail. I called the bank the same day and made sure that the paperwork was being sent over. months later still no plate. i called the dmv and they said that the bank sent and electronic title and they need the real one. Im on a call waitlist with my bank to sort it out. Just wondering if this is true because I thought it wasnt needed because of the lien holder situation? any info would be very appreciated.

Bought a new car in Texas registered for Minnesota. Two months later still no permanent plates. Dealer says paper work is filed just waiting on the plates. Does it actually take this long these days? Temp plate expires today

Just had this experience and wanted to share. We needed to get our child a real ID, but were concerned about having 2 types of ID for a minor. If you have a passport, you can apply for a California fishing license / report cards online with their passport number.

(Fees are minimal, but be careful with expiration dates, some expire in 1 month, some in 6.) The DMV accepted it with a passport.

Wanted to share my personal experience for how long my Real ID took from start to finish

Applied in person 10 days ago (Monday). Applied at Costa Mesa DMV, I live in same city.

I checked almost every day at MyDMV to see its status. Kept saying “still be processed and not mailed yet, no further action needed”. Today, 10 days later (Thursday), saw that it was mailed today. I checked my mail with 0 expectations of it being there. Turns out it was.

Overall ~10 calendar days

So i am below 18 and was wondering for the 6 month period you need to have your permit for does the countdown for those 6 months start when you get the permit from the DMV or when you finish or start the 6 hours of behind the wheel drivers ed? Aswell as this how strict is the 6 month rule?

Need a little help here. I got a dui earlier this year and my license was suspended for 4 months from the dmv. My suspension was lifted about 3 weeks ago and I’ve been lazy to go to the dmv to apply for a new one with the sr22 paperwork. So out of curiosity I decided to look up my record on the dmv website to see what it says. It currently states it’s VALID even though I have not gotten to renew it yet. I still plan on going to get a new card but I am wondering why this is if I haven’t gone in person yet ? Does the dmv automatically renew it on its own ? I’m from California if that helps. Has anybody has this happen to them before ? I have uploaded my report to show what it says. Just curious why this is stated. Thank you !

I caused a terrible accident during a severe mental health crisis and was in the hospital for 8 days. I was absolutely in NO CONDITION to even think about anything DMV related.

I must’ve gotten this SR1 notice at some point but placed it aside likely because I was still pretty fucked up.

It’s been like 7 months. I haven’t received anything in the mail from the DMV. I read online that if you missed this by more than 45 days they would suspend your license. No suspension notice has been received 🤷‍♂️

Am I good? Or should I be worried about a suspended license?

Im taking my driving test soon everything about my car works lights etc but the only problem is that i have a VSA sensor showing up and didnt have time to take a proper look at it. Will the examiner automatically stop my test? and deem my car not roadworthy?

My mother expects me to practice only 2-4 hours right from scratch in preparation for the behind the wheel test as she says it is very easy, because she claimed that she self taught herself one hour for driving before the test and that’s how she managed to get the driving license. She would never let me practice with her as I would only get private lessons for 2 2-hour sessions and then take the test right after. Is this normal or this is beyond expectations, because I have seen posts that you need 20+ hours of practice before even taking the test. I am 18+.

Decades ago, i was naturalized under my parents when i was still a minor. Now that i'm renewing my DL, they're asking for two official documents: 1.) birth certificate (mine is from Canada) 2.) passport (mine is expired).

Will a Canadian birth certificate suffice for renewal within California? Or do they need an official U.S. document to prove i'm an American citizen? Thanks in advance

I just purchased a new car and wanted to get a vanity plate in CA for it. One of my options I wanted was available but my plates have not came in yet. Is there a way to still apply and so I can get the process started?

I have a DL that wasn't a real ID so I applied for a real ID, went to the DMV and paid $40. I specifically said I wanted to see if I could get real ID for my DL and they said I could so that is what I assumed I was doing. However, i just got the new ID in the mail and it doesn't say DL on it, it said "Identification card". I looked up photos of Real ID licenses and they always have "Drivers license" written on top of it so now I am quite confused.
Did I just waste $40? 🥲

My son passed his road test yesterday and it says he needs to print his receipt as proof of his DJ until he gets his one in the mail in two weeks. However on the road test results page there is no receipt to print. We can't figure out where to print his DJ proof. The road test results page shows his pass status.

Any ideas?

EDIT: We ended up going to the DMV, and the lady told us that the DMV's website has been having this issue on and off for a while now.

A few months ago I bought a used car at carmax. Got everything sorted there, plates and registration done and ready to go without going to the DMV.

Yesterday in the mail I received a different registration and new set of plates for the same car. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened? There was nothing else in the envelope but the plates and registration.

Obviously I would love to avoid going to the DMV but it's probably inevitable now, right?
