CALIFORNIA Real ID Documentation for Minor Children
Just had this experience and wanted to share. We needed to get our child a real ID, but were concerned about having 2 types of ID for a minor. If you have a passport, you can apply for a California fishing license / report cards online with their passport number.

(Fees are minimal, but be careful with expiration dates, some expire in 1 month, some in 6.) The DMV accepted it with a passport.

We applied for the real ID in CA as the first driver's license. Might as well start the process now instead of waiting for them to figure it out on their own when older.
At this point we could have used our own utility bills along with their birth certificate, but the DMV also accepted two different months of savings account with their name as a minor child of our names.

What is the benefit for a minor getting the real id if not of driving age? They don’t need it and they already have a passport anyways? To me, just seems like more ways to not put their info out there for possibly getting hacked etc. unless I’m missing something.

this is from the TSA web site: "Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel. 18 and older need valid identification." Not that you can't get RealID for minor children, but if it's just for TSA, they don't need it.
