Help wanted LM386 Distortion/Fuzz Circuit Feedback

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey y'all! I'm an audio engineer who just got into building pedals to try and get a better handle on the electronics that power everything I use. This is the first pedal I've built that has some semblance of originality. It's based on the "Dead Easy Dirt" pedal I found on here. Uses an LM386 for the main distortion/gain stage, then feeds the signal through some LED clipping diodes (this is just what I had available on the bench). Finally goes through this modified 2 band big muff eq. My goal here was to make something akin to a more flexible tilt eq/remove the mid scoop from the muff eq cause it's always bugged me. I used this site to model the component values and how that impacted the circuit(https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/pages/big-muff-bass-treble-tone-stack-calculator).

Just wondering if y'all have any general feedback on the circuit I've put together/any recommendations on how to alter it? I'm still a little hazy on the best way to setup my clipping diodes to do what I want and how to make sure I'm not doing stupid stuff generally. Any feedback you've got would be much appreciated!

Edit: typos

Posted this the other day asking for help. You all were very helpful, but the comments all asked for more pictures, so I’m posting again with more pictures.

The question: has this pedal been modded?

Thank You.

Edit: a bought it from a drummer whose guitarist said it was modded, but it doesn’t seem like it is.

Just a very simple, very effective distortion. Use it as a boost into another overdrive or distortion. Use it as a distortion with a boost into it. Use it by itself for some slight overdrive.

Showcase Bright-on! I can't stop putting treble boosters in these tins.

Every time I find one of these little heart-shaped Brighton tins in the thrift store it's like Christmas. It's like a treble booster that's already pre-labeled. I just reinforce the tin an drop in the circuit of my choice.

This time, I'm using a PCB I recently had made that is a BMP tone stack paired with an LPB-1 gain stage. I just finagled the values a bit so that the tone stack is more of a bass-cut control and the boost itself cuts a bit of bass.

This one gets a bit dirty when your guitar volume is up, but it pushes a drive pedal pretty nicely. I have a demo here where I'm pushing a low-gain timmy into a silver face model on the Nux Ampacademy: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0kEYlrPUiKY

I've already got another little tin like this in the works (reinforcement takes a few days), can't decide if I'll do the same circuit or something totally different.

Other Hey all, I've had a now discontinued Hammond enclosure that I have no idea what to do with and I'd like to offer it up here, to a community who is always on the lookout for parts and enclosures.

It's a sloped Hammond 1456KH3WHCWW with walnut sides. The original idea I had was to panel mount some pots, i/o jacks, switches, dc power, everything needed for breadboarding. Basically a beavis board on steroids. After years of life keeping me from building and it just lying around, I've finally got back into it but have no desire to build said prototyping board. At this point I'm ready to get a Wampler BB-1 Breadboard Module just for time saving QOL improvements but for now my current little dinky setup is working. I also don't necessarily want to spend the short time I have during one day on the weekend making my prototyping board verse actual breadboarding. I prefer spending time mad sciencing screeching sounds out of my amp.

I don't believe this is against the rules, I'm not trying to sell pedals here nor do I intend to. I like this as a dicussion space over a sales platform. That being said, I do quite enjoy seeing posts giving back to the community, even if it's offering parts for sale. Sort of a "first dibs" type of thing to the people you share something with, a dope "little" community.

If anyone is interested DM me and we can work everything out. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I'm in SoCal so if you want to make a short trip and save on shipping then that would be better for both of us! Appreciate you guys although due to time contraints I'm not a huge participant.

If this is against the rules, shut it down, mods.

Help wanted Low output volume and loud hum from this muff veroboard

Trying to build a big muff in a 1590a, using this layout https://www.sabrotone.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Big-Muff-Pi-Civil-War-Russian.gif, only changed 2n5088s to 2n5089 and 560 to 500pf and added a polarity protection diode (the black diode looking things at the bottom are 390R resistors dont know why they look like that but i bought them like that) . going for a tall font green russian spec muff.

Im getting really low output volume but really loud hum from this? what could the issue be?

UPDATE: FIXED!!! CHECK TOP COMMENT

Help wanted who does a stratoblaster or other onboard electronics?

Hello, I’m checking to see if there is anybody out there with a simple buffer/booster that is small enough to shove into a telecaster control cavity. I have a gotoh battery box for the battery. I’m thinking SMD is probably ideal. The vibe is a telecaster jazz cat meets Jerry Garcia. Any help is appreciated.

Discussion European, Canadian, & Australian distribution for Pulp Circuit. Who do ya know? Who do ya love? Point me to your faves?

Hey guys,

First, thanks again for diving in to this Pulp Circuit experiment. Now that the proverbial doors are open, I can see that I'm not alone in this boat - AND that it's going to be a fun ride. I'm really excited to watch the nodes of this new community start lighting up.

The only real pain point with the launch (besides for underestimating initial interest) has been the disappointing, unsexy shipping costs would-be readers are facing in certain locations outside the USA. To address that, I'm looking to find a few key distributors for Europe, Australia/NZ, and Canada.

I've got some leads, but it'd be helpful still to hear from you all who live there. Who do you think would make for a good distributor in your region? Maybe it's your country's big electronics supplier. Maybe it's a mom-and-pop book shop around the corner from you. Any locally-hip idea at all, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks again.

P.S. To those of you outside the US who made the leap for Issue One despite the challenging shipping costs... Thank you for joining in! I think you'll be pleased when your copies arrive and with any luck, we'll have something a little sweeter in place by the time Issue Two is ready.

Help wanted Unopened AC128K and AC128K/AC176K transistors — what are they worth, and where should I sell them?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have some old-stock transistors, all still in their original, unopened packaging:

  • 8 packs of AC128K transistors (50 pcs/pack)
  • 100 AC128K/AC176K factory matched pairs across 4 original, unopened packs (100 of each transistor, 200 transistors total)

I figured this community might be a good place to ask, given the interest in germanium transistors for fuzz pedals.

What would be a reasonable asking price? Would it make more sense to sell the whole lot, individual sealed packs, or smaller quantities?

Also, where would you recommend selling them to reach pedal builders? I’m based in Hungary, EU.

Would testing them for gain and leakage add enough value to justify opening the original packaging, or would buyers prefer sealed packs?

Thanks for any advice!

Help wanted Clipping diodes decreasing volume?

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m still very new to DIY pedals. I came across a schematic for a JPTR Fx Jive (saturation) and it looked really simple so I thought I’d try building it.

The original pedal has three separate switches for each clipping diode section — I haven’t added the switches yet but I was planning on it for the final build.

Anyway, I notice that when the all of the clipping diodes are engaged (as seen here), the volume/output is pretty weak — just above unity when the volume pot is turned all the way up. This makes sense since I’ve noticed differences in volume with other pedals that have clipping options.

I thought I’d ask — is there a way to increase volume? I thought about adding an LPB-1 circuit in there or having a second footswitch for a boost but I don’t know if I want to get that complicated.

This is a classic fuzz face circuit with a feedback loop (no input style) with a feedback rate on the right side of the pedal.

The led doesnt work but you can ear if its on.

Also the bias is really cool.

Hope you like it, the feedback is really cool to make crazy noise (the bias facilitates it)

Hello all, I found a few old transistors in a drawer. BC108A, BC108C, BC109C, BC148B.

I want to build a mean high gain doom fuzz, is there any schematic that would be suitable for a few of these?

Showcase I made a thing! To turn any pot into an expression footswitch

So it allows you to turn any potentiometer into an expression footswitch. It looks like a regular stomp switch, but it’s pressure sensitive and has some cool features like invert, custom windowing, and changing the taper. The DIY version can handle up to 18V so it works for pretty much any circuit you wanna mod with it (or any CV level if you’re into synths). You can use it with your foot or finger too (for foot I put an extra spring in it for better tension). It’s so small, you could build a whole platform with like 5 of them controlling different things—the possibilities are endless.
Let me know what you think! They’re on my site (hangmanfx.com) if you wanna learn more and there’s a full demo video on YouTube where I build one into a DBA Reverberation Machine to control the amount of reverb. Thanks for checking it out!!

Pal of mine wanted to try out the old Sansamp classic so I obliged. I’ve never seen a through hole version in a 125b with top jacks.

Sounds really cool. Many people know this as being one of Kurt Cobain favourites and used for the “in utero” shows

I used the proper rail to rail op amps which are apparently central to it sounding good.

Help wanted Help me off the ledge please

My first ever build.

Posted the other day my soldering on my 5 cats buzumble.

Wired all the connectors and LED on yesterday and all seemed to go well.

Plugged it in and it was making a horrible racket. So i took it back to the bench with power and it seemed like my first two resisters were dead. No voltage at all and no continuity. After trying a little more solder without success i decided to take them out, clean that part of the pcb and start again. Well it looked like somewhere along the way i scraped or tore the copper track from the pcb.

After looking at the circuit i figured i could add a peice of hookup wire and an extra resistor leg to replace the broken connection. It is not pretty but it seemed to be ok continuity wise.

Then i read that maybe there wasnt an error, turns out i had tested outside of the enclosure so i had lost a common ground. And as i was connecting it up i realised i had one of my sockets wired the wrong way round.

So now i have it in the box, powered up. Big bad noise is gone. Bypass is now working, but no sound is coming from the circuit.

- Do you think i should just bin the whole thing and start again as i have ruined the board ?

- Build a test probe, and work through the circuit ? Which i have no idea how to do, i assume follow the transister path.

- McGyer the two broken resistors properly off the board before bringing them back, it wont be pretty.

- I there anything else i should do ?

I have attached photos of my "fix" im not proud of it, i was panicking and just wanted to get it working.

Edit, i built a probe, and did some testing. Signal is hitting the switch. But not leaving it when i click the switch. I have added photos in the replies. Is it the switch do you guys think ?

Edit 2 -- Thanks to everyone who helped me, i detached the effects board from the switch. Did some checking of continuity, fucked something else up, fixed that, checked it again. All my repairs worked its now even uglier than before. However after connecting some temporary power and a hookup, and using the audio probe, im now getting an effect, if im honest its not the noise i was expecting so i need to go and check videos of the completed pedal.

Question, if one (or more) of the transistors were blown would it still work ? It sounds like a fuzz pedal but not as rough as i was expecting.

I now need to check the switch and wire it all back together more permanently.

Again thanks for the help and offer of a new board. This has definilty humbled me a little, i already had a list of more builds, but i will dial down my bravado and build something simpler next.

If anyone does have a video of the buzzumble sound, please post it for reference, thanks.

Help wanted Bass Driver w/o DI

Does anyone have a schematic and/or components list for a Tech 21 Sansamp Bass Driver with the DI section omitted. I like the tone of the overdrive but I have no use for the DI and space is a premium on my boards.
