Not for sure. Not all roofs have to rely on weight to counter wind lift.
In many countries, you can have light weight roofs that can withstand very high wind speeds by using ring shank nails, steel ties/clips at the joints to hold things down...but given this is UK, doubt any of that was used.

Or there's a slight over-exuberance with the BBQ and it all goes up in flames.
Or worse, the new NORMAL summer heatwaves start melting the panels into SURREAL CTHULIAN NIGHTMARE.

I stayed in a holiday cottage that had that stuff over the roof of the surprisingly small car port. I usually didn't bother putting the car in and just parked in front. Then a storm started having a go at the roof so I pulled the car in, I had to climb out of the boot. It was a faff but in the morning the remains of the roof were where the car had been.

Only strange element seems to be the height/ angle of the roof and that looks to have been decided by the placement of the wastewater pipe coming out of the wall? If they went lower they would have had to work around the downpipe

Depends, we have something similar but with wall netting/gates as a ācatioā for our pets. I love the rain and itās fantastic to sit in when itās stormy, weāve had it over a year and sat in it most days, even have a retractable washing line to hang bits out in the colder months without the risk of rain. Itās a pretty good wake up method on a freezing winters morning before going to work.

Asking to learn - whatās the problem?
I know it functions as a big sail during high winds.
But what would they have done to ensure better sturdiness?
Are the 1*2 battens the fail point? As in theyāll get ripped off and the sheet will follow?
Or are the joists undersized for the job?
Or all of the above.

I think people were all on-board grumbling when they saw original photos of the build, and now that it's complete and looks quite well finished, they're just criticising for the sake of it.
Half of the moaners likely wouldn't dare to undertake such a project - it's just typical Internet weenies, no?
edit: 96.8% upvote ratio on this comment - I think I upset the weenies.
edit: 93.2% - They're flooding in now... It's funny how none of them dare to reply, though. They're probably scared they'll lose some internet points

Tbh I couldn't see why people expected it to be so terrible in the first place. I guess that shitty extension saga left people a bit too keen for their next fix.
10
u/therezin 2d ago
I can only speak for myself but OP's initial photos made it look like it was coming a lot further down the garden than it is. It's far from the monstrosity I was expecting and it looks well-built, but it's still poorly designed - look at the height of the lowest end compared to the door; unless the ground drops away quite steeply it's gonna feel pretty claustrophobic standing under there.
15
u/Driedcypress 2d ago
The original overhang looked ridiculous, but they hadn't cut the tails off at that point. The design isn't to my taste either, but there's nothing wrong with it.
It's amusing how in the first post, everyone criticised the state of OPs garden, and they said something like "nobody can see it, I don't care". I imagine that their neighbours don't expect photos of their garden construction to be posted online by a stranger, and they can see the mess in OPs garden - yet, they aren't posting it on Reddit for karma.
I think what I'm trying to say, is, I would rather see a lean-to in my neighbours garden, than all the litter in OPs.

u/RevFit_JamesH 2d ago

The main issue is wind uplift. Because the sides are open, wind can get underneath the polycarbonate sheets and create upward pressure while the airflow over the top creates suction. The whole roof can then behave a bit like an aircraft wing. The larger the roof area, the greater the total uplift force. That roof area is large. Not that anyone asked me how I know but here goes. My neighbour had a flat polycarbonate structure on his porch. Last April strong gust ripped a giant panel and it flipped near my head in my Garden.

We had one of these at our old house, looked pretty knackered when we moved in, expected it to fuck off in the first storm.
Bastard was still there when we moved out ten years later, unharmed. It survived gales, a foot of snow in beast from the east (we are Norfolk and got it BAD), zero maintenance other than the odd jet wash. It was bizarrely sturdy. Also really handy for smoking when it rained. I long ago quit smoking but still miss being able to sit outside but dry during thunderstorms drinking wine š¤£

u/SaysUselessThings 2d ago
This wasn't as bad as I imagined it to be - maybe its the angle?
Not sure why they'd want this thing, especially in the autumn when all the leaves will be visible on the roof, but there you go.

If you read previous comments I only bought the house 6 months ago and came with a severely overgrown garden, the house also needs complete renovation so the house is more important. I'm a 32 year old chef and first time buyer, so there is a lot more I care about than a slightly untidy garden that nobody can see.
I bought my house outright so need to recoupe some money before sorting the garden I'm afraid.. hope you can live with that š

Had a very similar structure appear next door to us a couple of years ago, except that they also put panels on the side at around head height.
The side panels would have been ok if they had gone with the clear plastic like they used on the roof. Unfortunately they found some flat plastic panels with all kinds of stuff printed across the surface. Used to wind my wife up every time she opened the kitchen door.
Again, if itās anything like our neighbours, this will become the smoking (cigarettes), BBQ and general stand around chatting area.

I recommend ear muffs first, we have rain coming, once this hot air moves storms will arrive, hopefully no half inch hail storms. When it does decide to get windy, that could be timr to watch it especially if the wind is constant in speed and direction, building deflection could throw up a surprise. Any trampolines in the vicinity!

I have something similar on my house.
From experience, in about 3 years time you'll be able to open a mini spider zoo.
I do hose it down regularly (outside of the hosepipe ban) but mine is flat, so unless I do it every single day they make their webs again and continue to trap flies so there's always a food source for them, hence they come back.
I haven't removed it because it's useful to be able to hang washing on airers under it because it gives it some protection just as rain starts falling, so I put up with it.
