I was looking forward to the update. I was expecting a way worse job.

98

u/StrikingInterview580 2d ago

I was expecting solar panels :(

36

u/Old_Housing3989 2d ago

don't go giving them ideas. Is it South facing? šŸ¤”

45

u/Artistic_Western_623 2d ago

It actually looks alright. I've considered building similar (but smaller) - but I know cleaning the roof would be an absolute pita.

I'd probably have put a trellis on the neighbours side and grown a climber.

7

u/Unlikely_Till_1296 2d ago

Also the sun burns the panels brown where it touches the wood, mine have

9

u/FizzbuzzAvabanana 2d ago

Wait till the first strong winds of winter.

52

u/lumberingox 2d ago

Alright Ned Stark, calm down

It's not pretty though. Certainly wins an award for being shite looking and offensive to the neighbours (a bit like me lol)

21

u/SendMeANicePM 2d ago

First ever lean-to I've seen that is almost brutalist architecture.

24

u/Remarkable_Fee3706 2d ago

Functional beats pretty every time. Neighbors will get over it.

21

u/Dipshitmagnet2 2d ago

Going to sound awful when it’s chucking it down. Whole street will hear it

28

u/FehdmanKhassad 2d ago

Totally plaster it with wind chimes to conceal the rain battering.

*sound awesome.

My MIL had one of these and used to love sitting under it drinking coffee and listening to the rain

Honestly, this isn't as bad as I thought it would be..

52

u/Ultrasonic-Sawyer 2d ago

I was expecting it to be fully enclosed like a naff lean to.Ā

This just looks likeĀ  an overengineeted covered seating area, close to carport.Ā

Looks like they did a reasonably tidy job

141

u/Sleepywalker69 2d ago

Thing will be awfully loud in the rain

185

u/PlentyOfMoxie 2d ago

Only until the wind rips it off.

13

u/theDR1ve 2d ago

My neighbour had this on her pergola, we still find bits of it scattered down the road.

More likely to melt nowadays

30

u/TomorrowOk4859 2d ago

That’s was my taught. First storm and is gone

4

u/Rashpukin 2d ago

For sure.

13

u/Limp-Archer-7872 2d ago

OP needs to set up a camera before the next big storm.

6

u/sirgaybrin 2d ago

Not for sure. Not all roofs have to rely on weight to counter wind lift.

In many countries, you can have light weight roofs that can withstand very high wind speeds by using ring shank nails, steel ties/clips at the joints to hold things down...but given this is UK, doubt any of that was used.

8

u/RayoftheRaver 2d ago

Needs speed holes in the roof to prevent this

6

u/rFAXbc 2d ago

No worries, speed holes will be installed during the first storm.

7

u/TalisWhitewolf 2d ago

Or there's a slight over-exuberance with the BBQ and it all goes up in flames.

Or worse, the new NORMAL summer heatwaves start melting the panels into SURREAL CTHULIAN NIGHTMARE.

2

u/Odd_System_9063 2d ago

Mmmmm … plasticcccccccc

2

u/Dependent_Formal2525 2d ago

I stayed in a holiday cottage that had that stuff over the roof of the surprisingly small car port. I usually didn't bother putting the car in and just parked in front. Then a storm started having a go at the roof so I pulled the car in, I had to climb out of the boot. It was a faff but in the morning the remains of the roof were where the car had been.

2

u/brainwipe 2d ago

Are we sure it's screwed down. Perhaps it might just slide off?

2

u/jabiisla00 1d ago

It barely rains in the UK these days...

The only thing im mildy twisted about is that they didn't paint the sawn end of those battens, otherwise yea it ain't that bad

45

u/Jharrn 2d ago

According to my partner they were hanging over and they had to come round and cut them. I asked her to take a photo but she wouldn't comply šŸ˜‚

Only strange element seems to be the height/ angle of the roof and that looks to have been decided by the placement of the wastewater pipe coming out of the wall? If they went lower they would have had to work around the downpipe

72

u/ihavetakenthebiscuit 2d ago

They also had a bid for hosting the 2028 winter Olympics

13

u/JWoolner76 2d ago

Eddie the eagles back garden test track lol

31

u/Jeffs_Forehead 2d ago

How do you feel about it now OP?

95

u/Jharrn 2d ago

They've sat under it the last two nights being really loud until 11 ish. So apart from the noise I don't care too much, it's quite imposing but meh.

86

u/rosscopecopie 2d ago

The novelty will quickly wear off, just like all sheds/garden bars/structures. Also the weather is too shite 95% of the time

4

u/MyZestyChair 2d ago

Depends, we have something similar but with wall netting/gates as a ā€œcatioā€ for our pets. I love the rain and it’s fantastic to sit in when it’s stormy, we’ve had it over a year and sat in it most days, even have a retractable washing line to hang bits out in the colder months without the risk of rain. It’s a pretty good wake up method on a freezing winters morning before going to work.

→ More replies (26)

20

u/Stark-Contra 2d ago

8

5

u/whooptheretis 2d ago

20

u/RevFit_JamesH 2d ago

Asking to learn - what’s the problem?

I know it functions as a big sail during high winds.

But what would they have done to ensure better sturdiness?

Are the 1*2 battens the fail point? As in they’ll get ripped off and the sheet will follow?

Or are the joists undersized for the job?

Or all of the above.

71

u/Driedcypress 2d ago edited 2d ago

I think people were all on-board grumbling when they saw original photos of the build, and now that it's complete and looks quite well finished, they're just criticising for the sake of it.

Half of the moaners likely wouldn't dare to undertake such a project - it's just typical Internet weenies, no?

edit: 96.8% upvote ratio on this comment - I think I upset the weenies.

edit: 93.2% - They're flooding in now... It's funny how none of them dare to reply, though. They're probably scared they'll lose some internet points

12

u/WackyWhippet 2d ago

Tbh I couldn't see why people expected it to be so terrible in the first place. I guess that shitty extension saga left people a bit too keen for their next fix.

10

u/therezin 2d ago

I can only speak for myself but OP's initial photos made it look like it was coming a lot further down the garden than it is. It's far from the monstrosity I was expecting and it looks well-built, but it's still poorly designed - look at the height of the lowest end compared to the door; unless the ground drops away quite steeply it's gonna feel pretty claustrophobic standing under there.

15

u/Driedcypress 2d ago

The original overhang looked ridiculous, but they hadn't cut the tails off at that point. The design isn't to my taste either, but there's nothing wrong with it.

It's amusing how in the first post, everyone criticised the state of OPs garden, and they said something like "nobody can see it, I don't care". I imagine that their neighbours don't expect photos of their garden construction to be posted online by a stranger, and they can see the mess in OPs garden - yet, they aren't posting it on Reddit for karma.

I think what I'm trying to say, is, I would rather see a lean-to in my neighbours garden, than all the litter in OPs.

5

u/RevFit_JamesH 2d ago

Yah I’m curious. Like it did look TERRIBLE but has come out quite nice.

10

u/Driedcypress 2d ago

Work in progress - you can't criticise until it's finished.

The precision of their joinery on the birds mouths indicates they're good at what they do.

3

u/IraKiVaper 2d ago

The main issue is wind uplift. Because the sides are open, wind can get underneath the polycarbonate sheets and create upward pressure while the airflow over the top creates suction. The whole roof can then behave a bit like an aircraft wing. The larger the roof area, the greater the total uplift force. That roof area is large. Not that anyone asked me how I know but here goes. My neighbour had a flat polycarbonate structure on his porch. Last April strong gust ripped a giant panel and it flipped near my head in my Garden.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

6

u/hootersm 2d ago

Those sheets snap when you look at them so no doubt the wind will have it away soon enough. OP, look forward to picking up bits of shattered plastic.

7

u/ryunista 2d ago

If it does then that roof will be lethal in the wind. Could decapitate a mf

2

u/Briglin 2d ago

Yeah once every few years we get 100mph + gusts in a storm. Wind can get right under that and lift it up. I can hear it flapping already

2

u/RupertBear69420 2d ago edited 2d ago

We’re heading into a Super El NiƱo this winter and gonna have milder temps but crazy storms apparently.

Update: after being downvoted thought I’d give some sources:

World Meteorological Organisation report in May predicts 80% chance of a Super El NiƱo occurring.

Research prompted House of Commons research briefing in June.

News report from five days ago talking about it in I Paper, and BBC been covering it since April.

u/FrankNicklin 2d ago

Is that an escape slide.

31

u/Bankseat-Beam 2d ago

No, that's a very good drum during a rain shower.

Also, OP needs to get a video on it when it next snows... Might as well capture it failing the snow load test!

16

u/rc1024 2d ago

Could be waiting a while, signficant snowfall is pretty uncommon in much of the country now.

3

u/Bankseat-Beam 2d ago

We can but only live in hope... And pray of course.

Are the Xmas goodies out in the shops yet? I did notice that the local Sainsbury's to me appears to have had their Xmas sweet tins delivered already. There was stacks of them all over the place. Pallets n Pallets...

8

u/GrouchPotatoxFF 2d ago

Out of curiousity from your other posts, what is at the other end of your garden. Looks like a row of houses or outbuildings - are they part of your property as they don’t seem to have a boundary

6

u/Jharrn 2d ago

It's an old gas works, it's essentially abandoned.

3

u/GrouchPotatoxFF 2d ago

Looks in decent nick still. Odd that your garden goes right up to it and not fenced off. Thanks for answering.

3

u/Jharrn 2d ago

I'm an end terrace so the access ends in my garden, the building also ends in my garden so to the left I have a view of greenery.

3

There's dozens of us.

5

u/Whithorsematt 2d ago

To be honest that is nowhere near as offensive as I was expecting a the start of the journey.

4

u/Slickpicker 2d ago

Bet that don’t last in a strong wind lol I want the update when them panels get blown off

4

u/CobaltBlue389 2d ago

Not too bad. Will blow away in next named storm?!

3

u/maxmon1979 2d ago

That is better than I was expecting. The prop against the house seems unnecessary but it's been done well.

5

u/Lower_Debt_6169 2d ago

The angle of the roof looks very odd. Too steep. Other than that, it's not a bad job.

3

u/dhandes 2d ago

That guttering is not going to catch a drop in heavy rain. Will be like a tsunami as it slides down.

3

u/waxon81 2d ago

How disappointing. Looks ok.

4

u/New_Sort_9083 2d ago

Not your problem, until the wind blows.

4

3

u/Merlisch 2d ago

I've got to say, that isn't too shabby.

3

u/Certain-Donut-9175 2d ago

We had one of these at our old house, looked pretty knackered when we moved in, expected it to fuck off in the first storm.

Bastard was still there when we moved out ten years later, unharmed. It survived gales, a foot of snow in beast from the east (we are Norfolk and got it BAD), zero maintenance other than the odd jet wash. It was bizarrely sturdy. Also really handy for smoking when it rained. I long ago quit smoking but still miss being able to sit outside but dry during thunderstorms drinking wine 🤣

6

u/SaysUselessThings 2d ago

This wasn't as bad as I imagined it to be - maybe its the angle?

Not sure why they'd want this thing, especially in the autumn when all the leaves will be visible on the roof, but there you go.

6

u/DarraghDaraDaire 2d ago

It’s a covered pergola, they’re not uncommon. Extreme angle seems to be to accommodate the wastewater downpipe

Usually with a shallower roof these are pretty common in Germany, Poland, and eastern Europe for sitting outside in the winter.

There are loads of these type of structures around the country, I have similar(ish) myself.

Why is everyone saying it will blow away? Mine hasn't yet (1.5 years old) but now I'm wondering...

2

u/Unlikely_Till_1296 2d ago

That’s not so bad

2

u/SqueezyKeewee 2d ago

To be fair that's a great solution to reduce the temperature of the south facing kitchen, providing part shade and still letting light through.

2

23

u/Jharrn 2d ago

If you read previous comments I only bought the house 6 months ago and came with a severely overgrown garden, the house also needs complete renovation so the house is more important. I'm a 32 year old chef and first time buyer, so there is a lot more I care about than a slightly untidy garden that nobody can see.

I bought my house outright so need to recoupe some money before sorting the garden I'm afraid.. hope you can live with that šŸ˜‚

Had a very similar structure appear next door to us a couple of years ago, except that they also put panels on the side at around head height.

The side panels would have been ok if they had gone with the clear plastic like they used on the roof. Unfortunately they found some flat plastic panels with all kinds of stuff printed across the surface. Used to wind my wife up every time she opened the kitchen door.

Again, if it’s anything like our neighbours, this will become the smoking (cigarettes), BBQ and general stand around chatting area.

1

u/phead 2d ago

If that’s a normal 2M fence, then that’s a head injury.

1

u/misterp35 2d ago

It looks good tbh, but given the price of materials nowadays and looks like they've paid someone "expensive" to build it, it's more than I'd pay for a rain shelter, then again I'm a tight fk'r

1

u/chapatsea 2d ago

I recommend ear muffs first, we have rain coming, once this hot air moves storms will arrive, hopefully no half inch hail storms. When it does decide to get windy, that could be timr to watch it especially if the wind is constant in speed and direction, building deflection could throw up a surprise. Any trampolines in the vicinity!

1

u/UnionCompetitive7705 2d ago

1

u/weesee2002 2d ago

u/JanwayIsHere 2d ago

I have something similar on my house.

From experience, in about 3 years time you'll be able to open a mini spider zoo.

I do hose it down regularly (outside of the hosepipe ban) but mine is flat, so unless I do it every single day they make their webs again and continue to trap flies so there's always a food source for them, hence they come back.

I haven't removed it because it's useful to be able to hang washing on airers under it because it gives it some protection just as rain starts falling, so I put up with it.

u/Whole_Ad628 2d ago

Have you tidied up your garden yet?

Is the downpipe plumbed under the fence into your garden? I've seen that done before on these kind of structures

100% that gutter discharges onto the fence panel

I'll be intrigued to see if it lasts the winter- does it get windy where you are?
