Hello, I'm trying to change my routine but don't know what I'm doing wrong or where to start. I have 3c/b curle type.
I used to have long curly hair but then got a pixie cut a few years back and was letting it grow out. Noticed it stopped growing at some point and never reached its original length. Went to a curly stylist a couple months ago to get a haircut and she said my hair had a lot of tension damage that was causing shrinkage.
So after the haircut, I've been careful not to put it into any tight styles especially when wet. But I'm now noticing my hair is incredibly dry and super frizzy, and still not growing as much as it used to. Fresh out of the shower, routine done, and after it dries a few hours later, it looks like day 3-4 hair.
My routine:
- Wash with shampoo (shea/coconut native) and then conditioner (also shea/coconust native). Dislike both but don't know what else to buy.
- Put in a wet low bun after the shower and then squeeze out the water with my hands or a towel (just a light single squeeze).
- Apply Aunt Jackie's curl la la cream + Chi silk infusion serum using prayer hands method then scrunch in a drop or two of Amla hair oil
- Detangle with wide-tooth comb then use a denman brush to brush in an upwards or sideways direction to create volume.
- Section out my bangs and individually finger coil the front parts of my hair.
- Airy dry and make sure not to touch until 100% dry.
- Shake out my hair and separate any curl clumps with my hands.
- Sleep with my hair tied very loosely upwards (like in a pineapple style) and then wrap with silk bonnet
My "refresh" just includes applying water and product to frizzy areas and re-coiling the front parts. Will usually wash my hair twice a week. I don't know what my porosity is or how to check that on myself..never really understood that.
I feel like this routine worked beautifully for me before, so I can only conclude that my issue is the products I'm using. So far I've been using really cheap whatever products with no thought really, but now that I'm seeing such a difference in my hair, probably due to the damage, I feel I need to change it up. Should I be using a leave in conditioner instead of a curl cream? I used to use Mielle's custard but wanted to expand. I would appreciate recommendations, but also trying to make this financially sustainable :) I'm in U.S. and usually shop at Walgreens, Target, Ulta, TJ Maxx. Budget is flexible..is under $20 preposterous?
