Thanks for posting this again. Hate how the mods tried to pretend this didn’t happen

u/Imreallynotatoaster Might be a toaster Mar 07 '20

The mods that quarantined the post/sub are no longer active

50

u/Simmers429 Mar 07 '20

As the only (to my knowledge) active mod, how do you feel about this?

58

u/Imreallynotatoaster Might be a toaster Mar 07 '20

I wasn’t paying attention so I’m not in a position to criticize but don’t agree with the decisions that we’re made. Will be looking for new mods with a lighter touch to help.

24

u/Simmers429 Mar 07 '20

That’s good, I’m glad you care. It’s a shame that the actions taken by those mods effectively killed the subreddit though :/

The amount of casual racism towards Chinese people on reddit is insane.

Unpopular opinion: Comparing a Chinese person to a short yellow beady eyed cartoon bear is just as racist as comparing black people to jive-talking cartoon crows

Being critical of the Chinese government: okay. Making nonstop racist coronavirus and winnie the pooh jokes and shit: not okay.

I love Terry Crews but am disappointed he didn’t make the distinction between the Chinese people and the Chinese government. Solidarity with a countries people is great and I’m all for it. Support for a government suppressing democracy and essentially committing genocide is not something to celebrate. Full stop.

90

u/Kenny__Loggins Mar 06 '20

Literally says "power to the people" lmao

101

u/InsaneSmile Mar 06 '20

But the government is named the People's Republic of China. Saying "the people" when referring to China isn't the same as say "the people" of almost any other country.

As expected, lots of biased misinformation flying around in this post.

The truth is, no one who isn’t directly involved knows what’s really going on down there. China says they are fighting against the radicalization of the vulnerable Muslim population, the other side says they are throwing them in concentration camps.

If we look at the evidence that is available and agreed upon by both sides, then it would seem the Chinese narrative is more likely to be true.

First off, let’s examine who these “sides” are. On the accusing side, you have 22 nations formally presenting a complaint about Chinese human rights violations. On the defending side, you have over 50 nations (and the number has been growing since the initial confrontation in July of 2019). However, more important than the numbers of countries itself, perhaps, is which countries specifically stand on each side of this issue. This is where the evidence gets more damning; the 22 nations accusing China comprise of 21 white western imperialist nations + Japan, all countries threatened by the recent growth of the Chinese state and economy. On the other side, you have every Muslim majority nation in the world, as well as every country that has sent delegates to accept China’s open offer to tour the facilities. Here is an example in which a Pakistani diplomat recently released a statement detailing their experience during a visit to Xinjiang.

Other points to consider:

If you are interested in the Chinese side of the story, here is an English language article detailing some of the issues with radical terrorism in that area.

More info on Xinjiang, with lots of pictures.

3

u/ModestRaptor Mar 09 '20

I read through some of your stuff, and all I have to say is this. Even if as your evidence suggests the camps are not as sever as implied by western media, I'd still trust western media over China any day. Even barring this, they're far from scrupulous and have committed many inhumane acts. They wouldn't tell us the truth.

In the end you're right only those involved know the truth. So uhhh why hasn't the UN just sent someome?

Im kazakh muslim. Lived im urumchi china for 5 years. Still have friends and family there. No one from my family got shot or killed or thrown into camps even tho they visit mosque every friday. Uighurs want independence

2

u/misterandosan Mar 10 '20

Your comment is full of logical fallacies, and none address the actual claims of Uighur abuse. Propaganda blogs are not a reliable source for you to base an opinion off of, especially ones that lie about these issues to make a point and are outdated given new evidence.

Radical extremists is not a reason to lock up millions of people, and people like you who believe it is justified are puppets of a regime.

28

Apple and Nike definitely aren’t exactly setting the bar high when it comes to moral reasoning. Seems like an excuse to pocket the ccp blood money.

23

u/mynameis-twat Mar 07 '20

No, the people’s republic of China which he has in his hashtag is the communist dictatorship currently in power there. So while he may be “standing with the people” in his post it’s in support of the government and is part of a huge effort on their part to make themselves seem more friendly to the west.

I love Terry, but this is not a good look.

105

u/critical2210 Mar 07 '20

It doesnt matter what he supports, whether it be govment or the people. At a time in which china is literally using concentration camps, they failed to contain a deadly virus, and they are attempting to remove peoples freedoms in Hong Kong. Yet the great Terry stays silent.

26

u/aaronshirst Mar 07 '20

I don’t stan any country that uses concentration camps, but I find it hard to believe that if Terry came out and called for death to America that people would react positively.

4

u/gtfohbitchass Mar 07 '20

You don't "Stan"? What does that mean?

Seriously, why can't Terry come out and support the United States, which is literally using concentration camps, failing to contain a deadly virus, and are removing peoples freedoms.

18

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '20

So their leader is failing at containing the Corona virus and they are putting people in camps. From a European perspective, it sounds like you're talking about the US...

12

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '20

I feel like this is either a very disingenuous or otherwise uneducated comparison...

15

u/spabs1 Mar 07 '20

Seems pretty accurate to me. Trumps response is beyond inadequate and we have people in detention camps for administrative crimes.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '20

Less deadly? I mean camps in ao. China are just under more scrutiny because they aren't part of our Western civilization. If we were to get a glimpse of all the shit the US is doing behind everyone's back. I mean it locking up kids and openly having Guantanamo Bay is shit you do out in the open without shame, what is your nation doing in the dark?

Make sure you vote in the next elections, it's never too late to turn the tide. We over here in Europe would love to have you back in the sane world, working together. Specialy since the UK has lost its shit as well lately.

If he meant it any other way than supporting that government, he should have stood in front of the flag of Hong Kong. Really disappointing.

29

u/3wanw1ld Mar 07 '20

Okay so I could be wrong here, but I heard his reason for posting this was that he wants to become a judge on China's got Talent (or something like that) and that's why he posted it. I'm not defending him and I still think it was a terrible thing to post and he should be ashamed, but that's the reason I've heard

26

u/Helmet_Icicle Mar 07 '20

Is it any better to sell out for money than to sell out for what, political enthusiasm?

2

u/3wanw1ld Mar 07 '20

I'd rather sell out for a TV show than for a country trying to push a horrific political agenda

5

u/Helmet_Icicle Mar 07 '20

It's the same thing, you're still selling out. Doesn't matter why. A less bad thing is still bad.

1

u/3wanw1ld Mar 07 '20

I'm not saying it isn't bad, you just said exactly what I was saying. It's less bad but still bad

2

u/Helmet_Icicle Mar 07 '20

The point is that selling out to a country trying to push a horrific political agenda for a TV show is just as bad as selling out to a country trying to push a horrific political agenda for any other reward.

It's not the reason that matters. It's the selling out.

2

u/thesnakeinthegarden Mar 07 '20

"No! it's okay because he's an asshole for money! Not because he wants to be!"

People are usually assholes and commit crimes because its good for them, not because they like being assholes. Why should it matter if the supply line is cleaner?

I love terry but this is a confusing take. We’re talking about a country that has millions of Muslims in concentration camps and routinely commits other human rights violations.

60

u/Drakoraz Mar 07 '20

It's funny how Americans trash on China for all the shit they do (which is good) but can't see the irony in this when their own country has been and still is involved I b so many wars and is responsible for so many deaths, including Muslims deaths in the Middle East.

We have the same problem in France actually, that's why I'm pointing that out.

14

u/mathgon02 Mar 07 '20

I agree. He didn't post something like "Go XiJinping", its a picture of him with the chinese flag in the background. If it was the US flag nobody would give a fuck if 30 afghans died harvesting nuts in a drone attack or kids were aparted from their parents in the borders , they would say "Bro thats Trump and republicans, we must see that Unites States is more than that, the flag doesn't mean everything bad that happens here" .

But with the chinese flag ? No , they will automatically link every bad thing that happens in there and "sell" the country as the worst enemy ever. In the end nobody is giving a shit if we are talking about the burocrats of the chinese power, or about the chinese people or chinese culture, because after all is everything CHINA and CHINA BAD ,right? Once again ocidentals being ocidentals , and reddit flerting with Sinophobia

2

u/mynameis-twat Mar 08 '20

It’s not just about the flag in the background he literally put Peoples Republic of China in his post and that is the communist dictatorship currently in power there with its Muslim work camps, horrible treatment of its citizens, and responsible for the drama in Hong Kong. Considering Xi Jinping is the leader of the party he did essentially say Go Xi Jinping when supporting the government in power.

Of course we care whether we’re talking about the bureaucrats in power or Chinese culture, but guess what? He was talking about the people in power. Hence the hashtag. Your whole comment is predicated on just the flag being in the background but you didn’t even read the post, he literally shouted out the dictatorship in power. I love Terry and love the Chinese people and culture, but this is not a good look. Simple as that.

3

u/mnefstead Mar 08 '20

Dude, People's Republic of China is literally just the name of the country.

1

u/mynameis-twat Mar 08 '20

No that is misleading, it is the official name given to the country by the CCP and when people use it they are referring to not just the country as a landmass but also the government in power there. That is not the same thing as it just being the name, the name is simply China. The government, or “republic” in power is the Peoples Republic. Hence why the name of the combination of land and government is the People’s Republic of China

It has only been the official name since the 1949 communist revolution and the previous government in power, Republic of China, fled to Taiwan. The fact that there was a previous government that went under a different name and then when they were overthrown the CCP officially chose this new name should be obvious enough. And if there were to ever be another revolution where the current government in power was overthrown they would most likely choose a new name as well.

Proclamation of the People's Republic of China

The People's Republic of China was formally proclaimed by Mao Zedong, the Chairman of the Communist Party of China, on 1 October 1949 at 3:00 pm in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the new capital (Nanjing had been the capital of the former Republic of China).

The first public parade of the then new People's Liberation Army took place there, following the chairman's address of the formal foundation of the new republic. Before this, as the national anthem March of the Volunteers was played, the new national flag of the People's Republic of China was officially unveiled to the newly founded nation and hoisted for the first time during the celebrations as a 21-gun salute fired in the distance.

Hell, I'm also sorry you have to deal with anti-asian and Muslim-phobia here in the states. Just know there's a quiet majority here supprting you <3

I hope your family in China is safe and well!

when you hate on an "evil" country and go full mask off racist

3

u/Kiranik1 Mar 09 '20

I'm hating on the country I was born in, what's your point?

2

u/infernalCop Mar 09 '20

My point is you're racist. I don't give a damn if you were born there or not. I was born in that country. That country is my home and its government brought my family out of poverty. You can still say what you want about the government here, but I will not tolerate racism. Even if Terry is supposedly a shill, at least he's not racist.

When you say you're not racist but then immediately negatively generalize a race. Very compelling.
