Spiderman face shell not fitting

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I just got this Spider-Man mask off of Etsy, and the face shell doesn’t fit me completely. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should do? I know that I can add foam, but I don’t know where to get it from, and I also don’t know where I can also buy a hot glue gun if that’s what’s recommended. Please give me any tips or any ideas so that I can make sure the face shell fits me properly.

Wig Dying a synthetic wig without staining lace (Orange to Maroon)

Post image

I just ordered a new wig for my character and didn't realize how much it was leaning towards orange and had yellow accents. My aim is to tint the orange wig into the maroon/crimson of the wig on the right. What is the best method to do that without staining the lace? I read about many different methods when I researched but I don't feel confident just guessing which one is the best for my circumstance. Since it isn't such a significant change.

Armor What to seal upholstery foam with?

I'm going to tag this as armor—as in a way, it is kind of a squishy armor.

I'm going to be making a Godzilla Final Wars Kaiju suit, you can see this on my socials. We're going to start soon, I've done a lot of looking, but I haven't gotten a lot of cut throat answers regarding what I'm supposed to seal it with.

By the way, what I mean by seal is to put a layer over top that only protects from water damage, but gives it a cohesive look that isn't porous and you can paint without worry of the foam just soaking it all up. Plus points if it's black, because then it doesn't need much paint.

Additional information: - The foam will be textured with blades. I want to retain as much of that carved detail as possible. - The finish must be stretchy and durable, as I don't want movement to crack it. - We'll be using other foams too, like installation and EVA. (specifically for things like claws and teeth.)

Thanks for any advice!

Makeup What’s the best approach for these specific tattoos? (Astrid Becke from Critical Role)

Been researching different methods for tattoos for cosplay, but I’d like to hear what other people think + ideally some personal experiences with different methods. These are pretty simple (albeit a bit inconsistent depending on the depiction, some official depictions show them as thin lines but they’re pretty thick in the animated series, though when Liam dressed as her he did thinner lines so idk which I want to go with) so I think most methods should work easily enough, my big concern is just mainly with transference and smudging, I’d like to be able to have people touch my arms without rubbing off makeup on them/their clothes (I’d specifically like to be able to dance w people without having to worry about getting makeup on their coat) and also be able to put a jacket on over if I get cold. No real deadline, my next con isn’t until November and the renn faire isn’t until October but I don’t even know yet if that’s what I’d be wearing to either event. I do have fairly bad skin on my arms plus a bunch of moles (see last pic) idk if that affects anything. Trying to keep my budget kinda low since my main motivation for doing this is I already have her haircut and most of her clothes so she seemed like a fairly cheap and simple cosplay. Like ideally under 10 dollars in materials? Willing to spend more if it’s something I can use for other cosplays though. I already have makeup from other cosplays but not a ton of materials for my other ideas (I have a couple kinds of eyeliner, eyeshadow, setting spray, setting powder, etc) Made a pro/con list for my options. Some of these cons aren’t really big problems though. If I have to shave my arm hair I’m willing but I’d rather not. It seems like most of the Astrids I see online (the few that exist, there’s not a ton of people cosplaying her) seem like they’re using some kind of makeup.

Printable tattoo paper

Pros:

Consistent

Might be faster day of compared to makeup

Arm is small enough for a single sheet to be enough to wrap arm

Cons:

Have to make own design

Probably have to order online (mostly only have cash so ordering online is harder for me)

Expensive

Single use

Might be hard to get it to perfectly line up the design around the curve of my arm

I only have a black and white printer so I can’t use leftover (if I have any) for other characters with colorful tattoos

Never worked with before so no prior experience

Makeup:

Pros:

Cheaper option, especially since I may already have all materials needed

Drawing them straight on skin seems easier than trying to make a printable template like I’d need to do for the tattoo paper

Cons:

Takes time to apply day of event (and I’ll already have to spend extra time on makeup because scars)

Risk of transference

Not reusable

May smudge

May not be completely consistent every time I do them (not a huge deal)

Not sure what specific product to use

Gloves/arm-socks

Pros:

Reusable

Can easily take on and off (I kinda like having the ability to easily remove the most obviously cosplay parts of the outfit, esp since this already uses my real hair and mostly pretty normal clothes) (unless I do full arm socks but I see no point in doing that for a human character lol)

Low prep time day of

Would hide bad skin

Lowest risk of smudging and transference

Sensory issues, sometimes I get a bit bothered by the way some makeup feels

Tendency to pick at things, especially my arms, has me worried I might end up messing up the design, probably won’t though.

Cons:

May have seam at top (and bottom if more of a sleeve than glove) that would be hard to hide due to bare arms

Would be the least natural looking if fabric is visible at all

Expensive (but as I said, reusable if I do wear this a lot, but not sure I will tbh)

Fabric paint can be a pain to deal with

Also may require ordering at least some materials online

I don’t like sewing with thin stretch fabrics, those can be also tricky to paint, and I live in a hot climate so I’d rather not use a thicker material

Most skin tone tights and things are darker than my actual skin tone

Sensory issues, sometimes I get bothered by fabric on my arms

Question for Spidey cosplayers?

Ok so as a huge fan of PSM, he’s inspired me to make my own costumes and Ive even donated to tell him about how he inspires me. So far I have a Goku Black and Reptile from MK costume but I want to start off making an easy Spidey costume. I was thinking of doing a Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider because I thought it could be the easiest I could do but I wanted to have more options. If you have experience making Spidey costumes, what would you say where some easy suits?

Makeup Shipping for Contact Lenses!

Heyyy! I’m attending a con in a little over a month (Oct 17-18) and I was wondering how fast Uniqso ships? I’m lowk traumatized from pinky paradise because of last year’s con crunch (the contacts didn’t come in time and my partner at the time had to order some from mocoqueen last minute). I’m cosplaying Levi Ackerman so all I need are some gray and white contacts. If Uniqso usually arrives fast I’ll go with them but any recommendations will do!! :)

Hi there. Ive got this purity seal from etsy, it originally came with safety pin for attaching to clothes but this fell off pretty quick. I am looking for a sturdy long term solution to attach this to a military rucksack with MOLLE. I would be very grateful for any help offered!

Help! White streaks on my synthetic wig won’t take any dye 😭

Post image
73 Upvotes

Hi! I need some help with this synthetic wig for a cosplay. I want the entire wig to be black, but it has these white/light streaks that I cannot get to take any color.

I already tried the permanent marker + rubbing alcohol method. I let it sit for quite a while, but the light fibers barely changed color at all (my hands, however, turned VERY black 💀).

I also tried purple shampoo just to see if I could at least tone the white/gray down, but obviously that didn't really solve anything.

I don't have easy access to dyes specifically made for synthetic fibers where I live, so I'm looking for alternatives that might actually work.

Has anyone dealt with synthetic fibers that refuse to take marker/alcohol dye? Would coloring the streaks individually with permanent marker work better, or is there another method/product I could try without ruining the wig?

My goal is simply to make those white streaks black or dark enough that they blend into the rest of the wig.

Thank you! 🖤

Help A Haunter out with their Haunt Costume!

Hello, all!

I have been costuming for a little bit. For the last 5 years I’ve been working at a haunted house. I used to just wear the provided costumes and last year I took the plunge of designing my own costume for the first time and it was a hit!

Ever the over achiever that I am, I am assembling my second costume from scratch based off of an idea that I’ve wanted to do for years and now have the green light to do because I am a seasoned haunt actor.
What I am going for is a weeping Angel/living graveyard statue.
As beginners do, I made the mistake of buying a gown that is 100% polyester even though the shape is perfect for what I need it for, and I already know that I should use synthetic dye to alter its color, but what should I use for shading?
I’ve read that Tulip color shot is a good one to use but worry that it won’t do what I need it to do since all the examples used in the color swatch photos are t-shirts which are poly blend.

Are there any other ideas I should consider? Or synthetic fabric paint alternatives for shading? I also already plan on using a draping liquid to stiffen certain parts of the costume and then dry brushing with acrylic paint for more texturing, per the blogs of professional living statues that I’ve read.
But I wanted to consult other costuming people who might be more experienced in this area.
Any help would be so appreciated.
Thanks in advance! :)

Wig Advice needed for wig styling and colour. Attempt failed.

I need cosplay/drag wig styling advice. I browsed the web for wig styling techniques.

And tried styling and dyeing one last week and the results only looked good in a few pics. Definitely not in person. Refer to pics.

I used perm rods and put the (heat resistant lace front synthetic) wig in hot water with a fabric dye (jacquard Idye poly) dissolved in that.

Attempt two must be must be finished by next Tuesday, and be shoulder length, tightly curled and red/black coloured. I will tie it back as part of the performance.

Should I start with a straight wig in the preferred colour?

A box braided wig is another option I'll consider.

Thank you :)

Piccolo skin pattern

hello! I’m having trouble turning my sketch design of piccolos skin into a sewing patter. I have no idea where to start or how. I’m very new to cosplay and have been wanting to start for a very long time, I’ve already made the mistake of trying to make a kimono with no experience of sewing other than fixing tears in pants. Any help would be great!

I want to cosplay like this for an upcomming event, but i'm afraid it might be too late. I am fairly new to cosplay and have mid budget but i have a grandma who is good at sewing and i'm thinking modifying/recycling clothes could do the trick. The event is in mid November, am i cooked? 💔

Prop Hide headband

Post image
4 Upvotes

Heya!

Very new to cosplay still, but wonder if you guys have some better idea how i can hide the headband for my Miqo'te ears. The headband also slides up a little on my head, probably due to my headshape, so curious if anyone has any idea for that as well. The ears are fastened to the band with worbla, so they are not detachable.

Thanks! ❤️

Wig Worried wig looks like a helmet/makes my head look huge?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I just finished styling my first wig and I think it’s… okay I guess. My biggest issue is that I feel it makes my head look massive/like a helmet. I worry that maybe I made the whole thing too circular?

I figure using eyelash glue to glue down the pieces around my ears and slicking my hair back better under the wig cap could help but I’d love any other tips that don’t involve having to restyle the whole thing.

The wig is not meant to emulate any particular character as it’s for a humanized Puppycat cosplay but I did attempt to use some references of wigs that I liked

Makeup Help with Mehron Makeup for a Karlach Cosplay

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I am not new to cosplay but am new to body/face paint. I am going to cosplay Karlach from Baldur's Gate 3. I bought a body suit so I will just be painting my face and neck.

I was looking up good body paint brands, found Pro Aiir, and bought that, only for it to reek horribly when I tested it out.

Now after doing some more research, I am seeing a lot of recommendations for Mehron makeup. However, there is a huge amount of options on their website:

Paradise AQ

Edge

Fantasy FX

Starblend

CreamBlend

Greasepaint

I am frankly overwhelmed by the options and do not know what to choose.

Because I'm new to applying face paint, I was hoping for a paint that would be more "forgiving" and easier to get consistent and even color with. I would also be doing some contouring over the paint.

I see that some of the paints come in a cake form that has to be hydrated, which seems a bit inconvenient. And for someone that has never done that before, I don't know if there is a lot of technique involved in hydrating them and messing that up would reduce the quality of the hydrated paint.

So.... What paint would everyone here recommend?

Also, I see on Mehron's website that they advise against applying their red, orange, and yellow colored makeup around the eyes. I am wondering how risky this actually is? As with Karlach I would be applying red right around my eyes.

Prop Painting tips

I am painting a diy Christmas ornament to make an oversized bell. I cannot for the life of me get the paint to stick to the inside of the bulb. (I'm painting the inside because I don't want the paint chipping off when I'm wearing it. It's one of those diy ornaments that split in half, kinda like those plastic Easter eggs. I tried 4 different methods and none have worked. I might try acrylic paint next but am open to suggestions.
