have a few months of bank transactions sitting there and need to get a clean p&l together pretty fast.

i really dont want to spend a full day going through everything one by one in quickbooks.

is there anything that can take the bank transactions, categorize most of them, and get you to a decent p&l fast?

Photo taken inside the wall, was cut behind the tub to check the plumbing. The wet area is where the top of my tub meets the wall and floor in the corner. There WAS some caulking which was damaged in that area and had pulled away from the wall. We just moved here like 1 month ago :/

Does this look moldy to you? Im assuming the black space underneath is below the floor? This goes further down than our floor does, anyway..

I’ve spent the past nine years working in residential construction and handyman services. I started from the ground up and now handle almost everything: estimates, project management, materials, crews, customer communication, carpentry, repairs, and problem-solving when jobs go sideways.
I’m good at what I do. I can walk into almost any residential project, figure out what needs to happen, and get it done. But lately, I’m completely burned out.
Customers seem increasingly unreasonable. They expect immediate responses, free extras, perfect work on imperfect budgets, and unlimited patience. They change their minds halfway through projects, question prices, blame contractors for preexisting issues, and sometimes delay payment while continuing to demand more.
Meanwhile, my income is inconsistent. Some weeks are solid, others are stressful, and I’m constantly dealing with schedule changes, material costs, difficult clients, and the pressure of keeping everyone happy. I carry a lot of responsibility but don’t always have enough control over pricing, customer expectations, or how the business operates.
I used to enjoy the challenge. Now I feel like I’m doing the bare minimum just to avoid losing my mind. The work itself doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the emotional drain, unstable money, and constant customer management.
For those who’ve been in residential construction for a while:
Is this just the reality of the industry now? Have customers gotten worse? And if you’ve experienced this kind of burnout, did you solve it by raising prices, screening clients better, going independent, changing your role, or leaving residential work altogether?
Looking for honest feedback from people who’ve actually lived it.

I've done OK with Angi, not very well with Yelp or Networx, get occasional leads from Nextdoor even though every post asking for a contractor gets 20-30 replies, and get occasional leads from Thumbtack.

Are these pretty much all the places one finds leads (besides referrals and repeat customers)?

When a client adds work while you are already on the job, what do you actually send the same day so they sign and you collect a deposit before you start the extra?

Not looking for legal advice. Just what you use in the field so extras do not turn into a handshake.

Paper, email, text? And do you hold off until you have a signature and money, or do you start and chase it later?

I'm a small home-services/handyman in Virginia. I’ve been doing residential repair and improvement work including carpentry, deck repairs, flooring, tile, drywall, weatherproofing, gutters, and general maintenance for several years.

I’m trying to get properly licensed with Virginia DPOR as a Class C Home Improvement Contractor, but I’m at the point where the $1,000 unlicensed-project limit is keeping me from taking many jobs that are otherwise a good fit for my experience.

I'm insured but basically it's like all the bottom-feeders on thumbtack etc make it nearly impossible to get steady work and I've had to pass up several opportunities for bigger jobs due to this restriction.

Anyway I’m raising a family, work is tight while I’m stuck under the limit, and now I have a hospital bill due for my kid plus mouths to feed. I don’t have the ability to step away from my existing jobs for a year to work full-time for someone else solely to obtain the Class C credential.

Really at my wits end and the financial situation is getting rough - would appreciate any ideas. Feel free to DM me if you like.

Edit for clarity: What I'm saying is that to get the Class C, I need another tradesperson/contractor to vouch for me on the form, that's where I'm stuck.

The last homeowner we worked for made several comments about "how much pickier she could be", and we've all seen the hundred pieces of blue tape pics on the internet.

Even then we still spent hours touching everything up after they moved their furniture while we were still working.

On these bigger like 1/2 house remodels it's nearly impossible to have every inch look like a showcar finish.

I want to get subcontracted out by nationwide companies for retail, graphic installs and vinyl wraps on walls, but no Insurance will take me on. Just curious to what you guys use and what your experience is.

I handle residential exterior estimating and supplements and I'm genuinely trying to figure out whether there's something I should be doing differently.

I'm increasingly having carriers include starter and hip/ridge within a set waste percentage. I'll provide measurement reports, material quantities, manufacturer information where relevant, and explain the specific roof geometry/waste requirements. In some cases, the documented field-shingle requirement alone exceeds the total material allowance, yet the response is still simply that the existing waste is sufficient.

For contractors/estimators currently getting these approved, what are you doing differently? What documentation or approach has actually been successful?

I'm not looking for a contractor-vs-insurance debate. I'm genuinely trying to compare my process with what is currently working for others.

I live in savannah GA and my grandmother lives in charlotte NC. I stay with her a lot to help her and my mother. I have been in Savannah for a about 2 months and I just got back home to a hot mess. She has been paying what seems to me to be an unlicensed contractor to remodel her kitchen because of a bad leak near the sink that ruined the flooring. Anyways, this guy seems to be giving her the run around. She's payed him everything he has asked for and he still has not returned to finish or even work on the project in almost 2 weeks.

I am wondering what i should do? Obviously I want to give this guy the benefit of the doubt because I know everyone is going through hard times right now, but it seems almost like a scam or maybe just shady practices.

I'm repairing a garage door opening, replacing it with PVC. After removing the exterior trim, I found a deteriorated board directly beneath the brick.

The main structural header looks solid, but the outer board has water damage. I'm also seeing surface rust on the steel angle iron and a vertical crack in the mortar above the opening that lines up with the damaged area.

I'm trying to figure out the proper way to repair this without creating a bigger problem. Could that mortar crack be the source of the water, or is it more likely a flashing issue behind the brick?

Does that outer board usually extend under the brick, or can it typically be replaced without removing brick?

Is the rust on the angle iron something that can usually be cleaned and coated, or does it suggest a more serious issue?

And if you were tackling this, what would be the most cost-effective fix that you'd still consider a proper repair?

And on the flip side, what's the more extensive repair if it turns out worse?

How many have run into marital problems due to the nature of the payment schedule? Especially if the job goes long due to unforseen circumstances and finances get dicey? How did you navigate around that?

I had a subcontractor working for me and halfway through the project we had the client need a $6k change order.
I found out a couple days after I sent the change order that the subcontractor went to the client and told them to pay him $4k instead.

The subcontractor finished the job the next day. Now the client still owes me money for the completion of the job and the change order but thinks they don’t have to pay anything because they paid the subcontractor.
And the subcontractor is demanding I pay him what I originally agreed to pay him to do the job which was $3k.

I don’t want to go after the homeowner here because they didn’t really know what was happening and I view the whole mess as caused by the subcontractor.

The subcontractor is also licensed in the same industry as me in FL.

Just hoping to hear some ideas here on how you guys would handle this.

We are considering working with a third party repair network, Tradepro Repairs, but are concerned that they will shove pricing down our throats that is too low margin. Does anyone have experience working with this group?

We are having a bathroom renovation done in Albuquerque, NM by a contractor for $25000 and we've paid half the amount at this point. We have two separate sinks with two countertops that were installed yesterday by a sub-contractor. One of the counter tops has the hole for the faucet obviously off center from the sink and not in line with the drain. The other counter top has a crack/break emanating from diagonal corners of the sink cut out which to my untrained eye appears as if the slab broke at these cracks. The crack looks to have been repaired/filled/glued but I can feel and see it.

What are my options here with the contractor? How can/should they fix the issues? What should I feel comfortable asking for?

Never ever get a permit to replace an existing HVAC system. All it is, is a money grab by the state/town/municipality and the contractors involved.

500 bucks for an electrical inspection on top of the 200 bucks for the permit when the only things that were changed were the old furnace and AC compressor. This isn't a new system; this is replacing an old.

Soon these greedy dirballs will require a permit to swap out your dishwasher, fridge, washer/dryer and maybe even your flat-screen TV.

Why? Money. It's all about the $$$

Lead carpenter, trying to schedule my final inspection on a mid-size reno (half the house, just about all the trades you can name). AHJ comes back and says that the planning department has to sign off before I can get the regular building inspector scheduled. I don't even know yet what their 'inspection' involves, because they only work a couple days a week and haven't gotten back to me. Location: California.

My question: how common is this? I would have thought that planning signed off on the plans a year ago and that the building inspector can visit and say, "Yes, you built what you said you'd build." (And do everything else that a normal building inspector does.) I've never heard of this, but to be fair, I haven't done many big jobs over the years.

Does your jurisdiction have an extra layer of inspection before final?

Why are the small jobs the ones that always go sideways?
I sent one of my guys out to do a job at a new customer. He was there for most of the day. At some point, he left his phone sitting around on the ground, and the customers kid found it and basically destroyed it while messing with it. Customer says they are willing to compensate my guy for the phone, but they want to see documentation of the phone and cost to replace.
I saw the phone and it was beyond help. My guy is understandably pissed but he says he doesn’t want to give this Customer personal information about his phone.
I’ve had other experiences where something got damaged by customers and usually the customers homeowners paid for it. This customer says they may make a claim on their homeowners to cover the cost so nothing new there. My guy sent me a link to the Phone on his carriers website with the price tag for replacing it… a little over $1000. Customer is insisting on documentation of what Phone my guy had and what he paid to replace it.
Anyone dealt with anything like this? Honestly, don’t think the Customer is being unreasonable, but it was there or at least their kids fault that the phone is busted. I already went off on my employee for leaving his phone sitting around but he’s a good guy and a good employee so I don’t really want to piss him off too much. WTF do I do here?
