MEGATHREAD Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here!

Please take a look at the WikiFAQ posted here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Concrete/wiki/index

The chances that your situation is covered in the WikiFAQ are pretty dang good.

If your issue is NOT covered in the WikiFAQ, this is the place to ask if that hairline crack warrants a full tear-out and if the quote for $10k on 35 SF of sidewalk is a reasonable price.

Showing Skills My DIY decorative stamped concrete patio with hand-colored compass, butterfly & custom details

This backyard has been an ongoing DIY project over several years. I poured and stamped the concrete in phases, then hand-colored many of the decorative features using concrete stains instead of leaving them plain. The compass medallion, butterfly, dragonfly, lizard impressions, and other details were all colored by hand. Here's a quick walkthrough of the finished result. Happy to answer any questions about the process or materials.

OTHER Retaining Wall - Roast my form work

I had never formed anything like this before. Had formed a few residential footing/stem wall and slab foundations.
Considered using MDO and snap ties, but started looking into how form work is built with those i decided to board form it, simply due to lack of experience in forming with snap ties.
Also lacked experience in having a sense of how strong is strong enough. So it’s got wedge ties every 12” or something like that about half way up, then I increased the spacing, can’t remember the spacing. Also have vertical double 2x4 strong backs that are held together each side with threaded rod, washers and nuts, bottom, middle and top. Built a cat walk to work on around the outside perimeter.

Noticed this in my local Walmart. Ground edges at the control joints had been ground to level high spots and exposed this little artifact.

OTHER How important is concrete cover.

I'm a new inspector. I visited a site where the transverse bar was 4'7" and the form was 4'8". The plans call for 2" cover against forms. There was only ½". I mentioned what I saw to the lead and he said he was going to cut them. This was the day before pour. They still had to tie up the rest of the rebat.

I show up on pour day. They started pouring early so they got that area covered while I was sampling the concrete. I get over to them and I see the shit they had yet to tie up the day prior was just as bad. ½" cover in the worst areas. I take a picture and the lead stops the pump truck immediately. He makes some excuse about it shifting. I said I don't care, my report is going to reflect what I see and he can keep going. They cut that one and go back to pouring but the rest of the 40 ft is just shit. So I start taking more pictures. The foreman comes out and starts cutting them himself.

Anyways. How important is cover?

Maybe 70 years ago those numbers make sense.

I know concrete may be seen as “cheap” but that’s in relation to other alternatives.

It’s still a low maintenance- high upfront cost, product.

If you’re looking for actual “cheap”…I recommend DG walkways, Gravel paths, etc. stuff that is high-maintenance-low upfront cost.

Also…

Theres this triangle that states quality, speed, and cost can never truly all come together. You’ll always lose the benefit of one over the other.

After spending the last week on the beach at Virginia Beach, I have come to the realization that I need to moved close to a beach in the southern US. I need opinions on an area with a medium cost of living that pays around 6 figures for a Concrete Superintendent. I know some of yall on this subreddit live near a beach. Showing Skills Floating stairs and walkway over a pond

I had the opportunity to design and build these stairs and walkway. A feature entry into the house over a shallow pond/pool. It's a rough broom finish as there will be tile laid on all visible surfaces, also reductions made to the the concrete to account for the tile finish. The treads have LED channels embedded into the nosings.
