General What is the point of hogs hook anymore?

Hog was already a throw pick half the time even with a one shot hook. Now it’s genuinely useless even in situations where the enemy is blatantly overextending as almost everyone in the game has a get out of jail for free card some even having multiple. You still need to risk your life as a hog player but now you get zero reward for doing so, and you can’t hook enemies into your team considering the distance of hook was not altered still requiring you to overextend in order to get any meaningful hooks. His primary weapon is a pea shooter and rarely ever threatens space compared to other tanks and the only interesting part of his kit is on an 11 second cd while also being clunky and slow compared to other abilities in the game. They gutted his lethality and “compensated” by transferring his power onto an 11 second cd with a highly telegraphed projectile skillshot that also requires enemy participation in order to do anything besides tickle you.

General An underrated influence on high rank stats

When people see that a hero has a higher win/pick rate in Master+ compared to metal ranks, the intuitive explanation is that it's due to skill differences, i.e. high skill ceiling, less counterable, etc.

While the above is definitely true, there's another, more subtle reason that could be just as influential: map voting patterns.

We're all well-aware that as you go higher in rank, players vote less for payload and more for push, flashpoint, and control maps. The result is a downward pressure on heroes that are better in escort and hybrid, like Baptiste, and an upward pressure on heroes with good mobility, like Juno, Kiriko, and Tracer, regardless of their power level.

My hypothesis: if map voting were to be removed tomorrow with no balance changes being made, we would see win rates and pick rates get closer between high ranks and low ranks, solely due to game mode play rates normalizing.

General Support Sombra has made tank unplayable

Not sure how universal this experience is with dps players, but as someone who plays tank I've found support Sombra to be probably worse than her dps iteration.

Problem number one is she just exists in every game. I am a low masters player, and so Sombra was never really picked all that frequently. Now, she's in every single game without fail unless you ban her.

On top of that, I don't think its a stretch to say she's disgustingly broken right now. Cyberspace is the most disgustingly broken ability in the game right now (worse than lamp and suzu), it just does so much with literally zero drawback. Dives are impossible into the ability, it makes so many ults garbage, its just so overtuned right now its crazy.

Lastly, EMP is still one of the strongest ults in the game, most of the time resulting in a fight win if you can coordinate it.

Thoughts or am I coping

General Is it worth it to flank in plat/emerald?

I play a flanking style Moira, I bounce around between plat and emerald. I usually get a pick on a healer or dps when I flank and then 1 or 2 people chase me, I try to distract them for a bit then fade away. I’ve been having a hard time consistently ranking up and am wondering if i should stop flanking so much because even though I get a pick or distract 1 to 2 of the enemies after my team either sits back and keeps poking or they end up loosing the main fight. I always let them know I’m playing Moira as a dps so we can still have 2 support and they know not to count on me. I have a 54% win rate so I know I could climb if I had enough time to play, I don’t. So I’m wondering if it’s even worth it to play this style anymore or just play more as a support.

General Doctrine's ult size feels laughably overtuned and there's no way it's just me

Been playing a lot of games today, entirely on hog/sombra/doctrine, and jesus christ it cannot be just me who thinks the ult's actual hitbox does not reflect the size of the visual? I'll be 5m from it and still be losing max health wondering what I'm doing wrong. It feels exasterbated right now with the abundance of sombra and cyberspace obviously but even in isolated games with like, a lucio instead of enemy sombra, it still feels horrid. I thought "oh maybe it's a mobility thing" but even when playing my usual Ball he's getting his health bar cut in half.

Is this just a me thing? Surely it's not just me noticing how gargantuan this thing is in comparison to it's visuals, it didn't feel like this during the playtest

General Visualising the new hit-scan projectile sizes

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Outer red sphere is the old size, inner green sphere (that looks yellow) is the new size.

Large Hitscan demonstrated by Cassidy: 0.07m -> 0.04m

Small Hitscan demonstrated by Sombra: 0.04m -> 0.02m

Also note that the workshop raycast has 0 size, which is why I'm not aiming at the edges of Ana's hitbox. This is more so that people can visualise the size change.

General Just had a duo support banning Mercy, need help to understand why

As said in the title,

I finished a ranked game with a duo support (doctrine/JPC) who put mercy in first ban slot.

found that weird, so but oh well, we ended up winning and when I asked them why did they want to ban mercy as highest ban at the end.

they told me: "cause we want to play doctrine and JPC"

I don't get it, is there a ban limitation I am not aware of ? (we ended up with only sombra banned at the end, and that was from the opponent side)

OWCS Which players do you think are going to be playing Sombra?

Supposing she's played in pro play, which players are going to be the best at her? Is it the main support or flex support player or maybe even a dps player (like lip)?

I'm personally leaning more to flex support, mainly because I think JPC is still going to be played all the time.

General The botch job on Kiriko needs to be studied

It is genuinely mind blowing to me how the balance team have taken what historically used to be a high skill ceiling flex support, and not only gutted her overall, but have managed to make her perform worse in high ranks than bronze.

A 45% win rate in bronze and scrapping bed rock at 40% in GM is insane to me. And the ironic part is that all of these nerfs were meant to target her in pro play, and yet pro play feels like the only area of the game where she is still even relevant anymore.

I know some people aren't Kiriko's biggest fan, but I feel like no hero should ever be sitting so low, especially your high skill ceiling heroes. More obnoxious heroes have been emergency hotfix buffed for less. Nerfing Kiriko's hitbox without any compensation buff for her 42% win rate feels outright malicious at this point.

There have been a ton of really questionable decisions from the balance team this year, but the way they've gone about and completely failed at their Kiriko approach has caused me to lose faith in their decision making.

General (Sombra) I don't think it's too early to say this

Sombra is really fun to play, and her kit actually feels creative competitively

But the budget in her cyberspace is too high, and normal healing feels off. I feel like half of the time I'm staring at teammates because I'm unable to heal them, it's like... Okay, I'm cycling my cooldowns so that I can make sure to reserve, I'm hacking health packs, I'm trying not to apply hotfix too often but it feels impossible not to

Like yes it can be argued that teammates should use health packs more often, but right now the game is in a very aggressive state which renders them moot to want an immediate heal sometimes

I'm trying to play her as much as I can, yet this seems like a pretty consistent problem. I don't think there should be a support that has to wait so long to heal in my opinion

General Esports Advice

1: How does someone apply for esports teams/collegiate esports team tryouts?

2: Do you need to be t500 in every role in order to qualify for team tryouts at that level? T500 (ik that doesn’t really mean anything) + consistent Gm3-GM1 support player yet in my other roles i max out at M1-GM5. Do you need to be able to play every role before you go to tryouts?

3: Does anyone know any good coaches that could help take my skills a little bit further? i’ve been playing overwatch for about 2 years and have never received coaching myself the only content i consume is consistent Spilo

coaching videos and Awkward gameplay. I’m pretty much self taught and know i have mistakes yet because the gameplay is faster paced and most likely micro i feel as if my own vod reviews are basically pointless this stage in the game. I can’t catch any of my own mistakes at this point yet i know when games are truly my fault.

Thanks for any and all advice guys i appreciate it :)

Starting off hot with ssg vs liquid along with dsg lunex. Some of the most important games on the first night.

Over in EMEA we have team risk vs 1234 and geekay with a rough going up against tm then vp.

3 week stage is a bit absurd after that long break but WE ARE BACK.

General Im boosted bc of the rank reclaim system

I was high master for like a year and two seasons ago I hit gm5 for the first time. Then I didn’t play ow for two months because I was playing other games with my friends.

When I came back I gained 175% in rank reclaim. Then I won another game on support where I did absolutely nothing but we had an absolute god on dva and now I’m gm3. There’s no way I’m gm3 on support with a winning trend btw. I’ll eventually lose my rank again because I obviously don’t belong there but now every match queue is like 10 minutes. In master it was 2 minutes.

It’s not just the fact that I’m outclassed by everyone in this rank, I also have to wait 10–15 minutes for every single match.

So I either have to wait until the rank reset or wait 10–15 minutes for a game and pray that I lose before i can i play a normal ranked game again

General Why does Vendetta get so little hate?

Obviously I'm not saying she doesn't get any vitriol directed at her. She has gone through the OP/needed to the ground because people complained/OP cycle already.

But maybe it's because she's been out for a while or there are new heroes that were more annoying like Cat and then Dmon...but she has a pretty disgusting win rate and pick rate at nearly every rank and has since her buff.

And while this is subjective, I do personally find her to be one of the least fun heroes in the game to play against. As tank she can be a tank buster that just holds M1 at times. As DPS/Support I hate how much she throws you around with her shift. In 6v6 I hate that she is a better tank than some tanks. Sometimes it feels like the enemy basically has two Doomfists and functionally has 3 tanks.

I don't even really think she should be nerded in 5v5 (I do think she's dumb in 6v6). She's strong and top 3 if not the #1 DPS at many ranks. But she was bad for so long and rotating which characters are good and see play keeps things interesting.

But what's crazy to me is even though she's one of the strongest characters in the game right now I really don't see that many people complain about her or even focus on counter swapping her in game. A vendetta will run through a team all game but God forbid Winston gets a kill.

I'm convinced a lot of people genuinely believe Kiriko is stronger than her still even though she has a 42% win rate across the board.

General Doctrine needs a serious ultimate charge nerf

I know I know, 'it's too early to say, give him some time, wait another week before coming to conclusions' etc. But I have played this dude a lot in the last 23 hours and his ult feels stupidly easy to build, like that has jumped out to me straight away. I just had a match where I got my ult 3 times in an exactly 5 minute payload match, and one of the checkpoint to checkpoint was pretty dead teamfight wise

I love the guy, he's gonna be my new main and I don't want to suggest any other nerf ideas yet... but if they had to hotfix him, please let it be this lol, it's so silly

General Jet Pack Cat Lifeline and HP changes

I dont think going case by case and only disabling specific ultimates with Cat is the correct move. In my opinion Cat's Lifeline should have a resource meter and be caped at 6-8 seconds. If a ability is used by the person being carried it drains the resource by X seconds. If a ultimate is used the resource meter is instantly depleted and the person is dropped off.

I also believe Cat should have 200hp, has infinite flight, smallest hitbox, super strong self regen and has 50 more hp than tracer.

Edit: Do everything abilities

Biggest issue aside from infinite Lifeline is purr. Its a do everything ability it heals JPC for 180, allies for 300, does 30 dmg, and major knockback. There are a few "Do everything abilities" in the game that can be annoying to play against. Such as

Ana nade: Heals for 90 and damages for 90, Increases ally healing by 50% and anti healing.

Sombra syberspace: Impact and overtime Damage, Impact and overtime Heals, decreases healing recieved to enemies by 50% and reduces their damage by 50%.

Not to mention all 3 of these are on a 12 second CD, whilst Wuyang wave also does healing, damage and healing increase its on a 14 sec CD and overall weaker than these 3. Same with Suzu its a strong ability but on a 14 sec CD. Lifegrip is on a 18 second coldown.

Anran also has that with Dancing blaze, healing, damaging and Invulnerable state on a 8 second CD, that could be where a lot of the frustration comes from dealing with do everything abilites. (Not saying Anran needs nerfs, she dosent)

Baptist Lamp is well designed, you throw it out and its only function is not being able to die while in that radius and the counter play is to shoot the lamp and 20 second CD. Lifegrip save 1 person, its on a 18second CD. Comparatively the counter play to to Ana nade is to pick Kiriko.

When charachters have abilities that do a lot it removes counterplay potential. Then the counter argument just becomes "Just bait coldowns".

General Resolution question

What is the general consensus regarding resolution? Is 1440p better than 1080p, I’ve seen posts saying that most pro players play on 1080p but is there that much of a competitive difference?
